Krutch's trenchant observations about life prospering in the hostile environment of Arizona's Sonoran Desert turn to weighty questions about humanity and the precariousness of our existence, putting lie to Western denials of mind in the "lower" forms of life: "Let us not say that this animal or even this plant has 'become adapted' to desert conditions. Let us say rather that they have all shown courage and ingenuity in making the best of the world as they found it. And let us remember that if to use such terms in connection with them is a fallacy then it can only be somewhat less a fallacy to use the same terms in connection with ourselves.". Encompassing thirty-eight handwritten volumes, Virginia Woolf's diary is her longest work, her longest sustained, and last work to reach the public. In the only full-length work to explore deeply this luminous and boundary-stretching masterpiece, Barbara Lounsberry traces Woolf's development as a writer through her first twelve diaries-a fascinating experimental stage, where the earliest hints of Woolf's pioneering modernist style can be seen. Starting with fourteen-year-old Woolf's first palm-sized leather diary, Becoming Virginia Woolf illuminates how her private and public writing

Description based on print version record

Where has the personal diary gone--and what forms has it taken--in the digital age? From the diary spaces of reality television and the how-to diary and its audience of self-helpers, in the emerging genre of the graphic diary or the online diaries of sex bloggers, in the published diaries of war correspondents or the urgent personal writing of Arab women under conflict, this book explores a new wave in diary publication and production. It also provides a fresh look at the diary as a contemporary form of autobiography. In Dear World, Kylie Cardell is sensitive to how changes to our notions of privacy and the personal--spurred by the central presence the Internet has come to occupy in our daily lives--impact how and why diaries are written, and for whom. She considers what these new uses of the diary tell us about the cultural politics of self-representation in a time of mass attention to (and anxiety about) the personal. Cardell sees the twenty-first-century diary as a vibrant and popular cultural practice as much as a literary form, one that plays a key role in mass-mediated notions of authenticity, subjectivity, and truth. Dear World provides much-needed new attention to the innovation, evolution, and persistence of a familiar yet complex autobiographical mode. -- Provided by publisher

On Diary is the second collection in English of the groundbreaking and profoundly influential work of one of the best-known and provocative theorists of autobiography and diary. Ranging from the diary's historical origins to its pervasive presence on the Internet, from the spiritual journey of the sixteenth century to the diary of Anne Frank, and from the materials and methods of diary writing to the question of how diaries end, these essays display Philippe Lejeune's expertise, eloquence, passion, and humor as a commentator on the functions, practices, and significance of keeping or reading a diary.Lejeune is a leading European critic and theorist of diary and autobiography. His landmark essay, "The Autobiographical Pact," has shaped life writing studies for more than thirty years, and his many books and essays have repeatedly opened up new vistas for scholarship. As Michael Riffaterre notes, "Lejeune's work on autobiography is the most original, powerful, effective approach to a difficult subject. . . . His style is very personal, lively. It grabs the reader as scholarship rarely does. Lejeune's erudition and methodology are impeccable." Two substantial introductory essays by Jeremy Popkin and Julie Rak place Lejeune's work within its critical and theoretical traditions and comment on his central importance within the fields of life writing, literary genetic studies, and cultural studies

Until recently, writings of a private nature have been neglected in literary and textual studies. There are two main reasons for this: the scarcity of pre-modern witnesses of this type of textual production and, in contrast, the over-abundance of material in contemporary writers' archives. Although in more recent times there has been a marked shift towards the study of private and personal writings, important issues remain to be studied. In the light of genetic criticism and in the context of the broadening attention of textual scholarship to all matters relating to textual production, these texts have acquired a new status, but the legal, philological and historical questions they raise have not been systematically addressed. The new interest of textual scholarship in the processes of creation and dissemination of texts offers an opportunity to reflect more thoroughly on the nature of these documents: on the role they play as witnesses to specific literary or para-literary genres (e.g. letters, diaries), on their significance in circumstances of political repression, and as part of the textual genetic process. This collection of essays includes articles that deal, through heterogeneous approaches, with different aspects of Dutch, English, French, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Spanish written cultures.

The Diaries, Volume II, continue after the death of Marina Tsvetaeva, he returns to Moscow, where he could stay with aunt Lilja, a sister of his father, living off from selling items that he inherited from his mother. At that time Moscow was undergoing air raids; the situation was devastating and became more and more chaotic. He feared to get drafted for work at the defense wall. So, he decided to join a transport of the Union of Soviet Writers to Uzbekistan. The Diaries of Georgij Ėfron may be considered a singular historical document, nobody dared to put down in writing freely and uncensured unorthodox thoughts and commentaries about the deplorable and miserable condition of the Soviet society and the hardship of a life as an evacuee in the hinterlands. His notes are of an astonishing high literary quality as well. On Diary is the second collection in English of the groundbreaking and profoundly influential work of one of the best-known and provocative theorists of autobiography and diary. Ranging from the diary’s historical origins to its pervasive presence on the Internet, from the spiritual journey of the sixteenth century to the diary of Anne Frank, and from the materials and methods of diary writing to the question of how diaries end, these essays display Philippe Lejeune’s expertise, eloquence, passion, and humor as a commentator on the functions, practices, and significance of keeping or reading a diary.Lejeune is a leading European critic and theorist of diary and autobiography. His landmark essay, "The Autobiographical Pact," has shaped life writing studies for more than thirty years, and his many books and essays have repeatedly opened up new vistas for scholarship. As Michael Riffaterre notes, "Lejeune’s work on autobiography is the most original, powerful, effective approach to a difficult subject. . . . His style is very personal, lively. It grabs the reader as scholarship rarely does. Lejeune’s erudition and methodology are impeccable." Two substantial introductory essays by Jeremy Popkin and Julie Rak place Lejeune’s work within its critical and theoretical traditions and comment on his central importance within the fields of life writing, literary genetic studies, and cultural studies

'Virginia Woolf's Modernist Path' offers an extensive treatment of Woolf's second diary stage: her spare, modernist diaries written from 1918 to 1929. These thirteen middle diary books are explored in depth and Woolf's development as a diarist traced across what is often called her modernist golden age when she wrote her most famous works: 'Mrs. Dalloway', 'To the Lighthouse', 'Orlando', 'A Room of One's Own', and the first 'Common Reader'.

This book presents research on the cognitive, emotional, and developmental pathways through which disclosure influences health. Although writing has been a popular therapeutic technique for several years, only recently have researchers subjected it to rigorous scientific scrutiny. The contributors to this book present findings on expressive writing and health outcomes and point students and scientists to new avenues of research. The volume contains illustrations of clinical applications for this technique as well as examples of how expressive writing can improve immune system and lung function, diminish psychological distress, and enhance relationships and social role functioning. /// This volume will be of interest to researchers and practitioners who explore and work with expressive therapy techniques. "Anaïs Nin made her reputation through publication of her edited diaries and the carefully constructed persona they presented. It was not until decades later, when the diaries were published in their unexpurgated form, that the world began to learn the full details of Nin's fascinating life and the emotional and literary high-wire acts she committed both in documenting it and in defying the mores of 1950s America. Trapeze begins where the previous volume, Mirages, left off: when Nin met Rupert Pole, the young man who became not only her lover but later her husband in a bigamous marriage. It marks the start of what Nin came to call her "trapeze life," swinging between her longtime husband, Hugh Guiler, in New York and her lover, Pole, in California, a perilous lifestyle she continued until her death in 1977. Today what Nin did seems impossible, and what she sought perhaps was impossible: to find harmony and completeness within a split existence. It is a story of daring and genius, love and pain, largely unknown until now"-- Preface / by Paul Herron -- Introduction / by Benjamin Franklin V -- Chronology -- 1947 : part two of my life -- 1948 : La Joie -- 1949 : a typical American wife -- 1950 : a web of lies -- 1951 : my unwanted presence -- 1952 : the tree and the pillar -- 1953 : desire will buy another airplane ticket -- 1954 : with Hugo there is no relief -- 1955 : to hell with the laws.
