Sherman investigates modernism's corpses and the ethical demands they make on the living. His readings of poetry and fiction by a range of authors return to fundamental questions about modernism's ability to reconstruct the symbolic locations of the dead and to rearticulate for modern consciousness one's obligations to another's dying and dead body.

Our own birth and death elude our conscious experience. The world’s literatures give us the opportunity to access the beginning and end of a life, to represent, reflect upon, and (re)stage birth, life, dying, and death. This highly mobile configuration releases a tremendous creative energy, which this volume analyzes against the backdrop of the question of the knowledge of life Unsere eigene Geburt und unser eigener Tod entziehen sich unserem reflektierten Erleben. Jahrhunderts untersuchen

Much has been written on Simone de Beauvoir, one of France's leading intellectual figures of the 20th century. The sheer volume of her autobiographical writings testifies to her indefatigable questioning of the nature of existence and her personal and public engagement in the world over the best part of a century. This study aims to re-evaluate her extensive autobiographical œuvre, exploring its place in relation to the French autobiographical canon, and in the light of recent theorisations of autobiography. It presents readings which engage critically with existentialism, feminist theory, and autobiography studies generally, in particular focusing on the question of 'autothanatography', a term developed by theorists such as Jacques Derrida and Louis Marin. A new reading of the autobiographies via the lens of thanatos is presented with questions of gender in mind, and the nature of autobiography as genre is also explored more fully with particular attention paid to narrative voice. Close readings of the autobiographical œuvre combine with contextual details, critical overviews and links to recent developments in critiques of Beauvoir's fiction and philosophy. The study would be of particular interest to scholars in the following areas: 20th century French literature and culture; Autobiography studies; Literary theory; existentialism; Women's studies

"In Reading Death in Ancient Rome, Mario Erasmo considers both actual funerary rituals and their literary depictions in epic, elegy, epitaphs, drama, and prose works as a form of participatory theater in which the performers and the depicters of rituals engage in strategies to involve the viewer/reader in the ritual process, specifically by invoking and playing on their cultural associations at a number of levels simultaneously. He focuses on the associative reading process-the extent to which literary texts allude to funeral and burial ritual, the narrative role played by the allusion to recreate a fictive version of the ritual, and how the allusion engages readers' knowledge of the ritual or previous literary intertexts." "Such a strategy can advance a range of authorial agendas by inviting readers to read and reread assumptions about both the surrounding Roman culture and earlier literature invoked through intertextual referencing. By (re)defining their relation to the dead, readers assume various roles in an ongoing communion with the departed." "Reading Death in Ancient Rome makes an important and innovative contribution to semiotic theory as applied to classical texts and to the emerging field of mortality studies. It should thus appeal to classicists as well as to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in art history and archeology."--BOOK JACKET.

"The Celebration of Death in Contemporary Culture investigates the emergence and meaning of the cult of death. Over the last three decades, Halloween has grown to rival Christmas in its popularity and profitability; dark tourism has emerged as a rapidly expanding industry; and funerals have become less traditional. "Corpse chic" and "skull style" have entered mainstream fashion, while elements of gothic, horror, torture porn, and slasher movies have streamed into more conventional genres. Monsters have become pop culture heroes: vampires, zombies, and serial killers now appeal broadly to audiences of all ages. This book considers, for the first time, these phenomena as aspects of a single movement, documenting its development in contemporary Western culture. Previous considerations of our fixation on death have not developed a convincing theory linking the mounting demand for images of violent death and the dramatic changes in death-related social rituals and practices. This book offers a conceptual framework that connects the observations of the simulated world of fiction and movies--including The Twilight Saga, The Vampire Diaries, Night Watch, Hannibal, and the Harry Potter series--to social and cultural practices, providing an analysis of the specific aesthetics and the intellectual and historical conditions that triggered the cult of death. It also considers the celebration of death in the context of a longstanding critique of humanism and investigates the role played by 20th-century French theory, as well as by posthumanism, transhumanism, and the animal rights movement, in the formation of the current antihumanist atmosphere. With its critique of movie and book blockbusters and the death-related social rituals, festivals, and fashions that have coalesced into the cult of death, this timely volume will appeal to anyone hoping to better understand a defining phenomenon of our age. Scholars and general readers of cultural studies, film and literary studies, anthropology, and American and Russian studies will find this book thought-provoking"--

Köster investigates the subject of death and dying as depicted on Scandinavian runic stones from the Viking era. Her study calls into question our conventional understanding of the function of these inscriptions, showing that runic inscriptions were not limited to epigraphs, but were also prepared more generally for individuals who were still alive

Main description: The study deals with the thematic combination of 'sexuality and death' in order to explore the functional-structural relationship between literary and cultural discourses and its historical changes. The areas of investigation are English culture between the late 18th and the late 19th century as well as the gothic and sensation narratives of the time. A thorough theoretical foundation is followed first by an investigation of historical developments in the cultural discourses of sexuality and death, and then by extensive analyses of texts by Walpole, Lewis, Mary Shelley, Emily Brontk, Collins, Le Fanu, Wilde, Stoker and others

Review text: "Meier's book impresses the reader by its broad approach, excellent structure, thorough reflections, balanced judgements, and last but not least its comprehensive documentation with a wealth of information and discussion in the footnotes."Michael Meyer in: Germanisch-Romanische Monatsschrift 4/2008

Main description: The study sets out from an inquiry into why in the late 19th and early 20th century literature turned more and more to the subject of death although this phenomenon was increasingly repressed and negated in public awareness. The bias of this inquiry is slanted towards the aesthetic procedures enabling literature to embark on this new engagement with the experience of finiteness and mortality. Interpretations of selected texts in German demonstrate the extent to which narrative structures are suffused, affected and changed by new structures of awareness

This comparative study places literary meditation on death in the context of the emergence of a 'meditative concept of conscience' in the early modern age. On the basis of an extensive corpus of German, French, and English sources, meditatio mortis is scrutinized for its potential in the individualization of memory. The study concentrates on the literary and poetological consequences of meditation for the textual structure. The most prominent characteristic of this is the high degree of self-reflection and the significance of the anatomical perspective, both of which leave their mark on the self-contemplation of the meditative self
