We analyze the United Nations commodities trade database (UN comtrade), comprised of international commodities exchanges in volume and price with monthly resolution. We introduce a trade impact index to quantify the impact, in terms of distance travelled, of importing a specific food raw commodity in a specific period of the year and in a specific country of the world. This index captures the seasonal exchange of raw commodities in an insightful and concise manner.

Big data is revolutionizing the finance industry and has the potential to significantly shape future research in finance. This special issue contains articles following the 2019 NBER/ RFS conference on big data. In this Introduction to the special issue, we define the "Big Data" phenomenon as a combination of three features: large size, high dimension, and complex structure. Using the articles in the special issue, we discuss how new research builds on these features to push the frontier on fundamental questions across areas in finance - including corporate finance, market microstructure, and asset pricing. Finally, we offer some thoughts for future research directions

"Every day, more and more kinds of historical data become available, opening exciting new avenues of inquiry but also new challenges. This updated and expanded book describes and demonstrates the ways these data can be explored to construct cultural heritage knowledge, for research and in teaching and learning. It helps humanities scholars to grasp Big Data in order to do their work, whether that means understanding the underlying algorithms at work in search engines or designing and using their own tools to process large amounts of information. Demonstrating what digital tools have to offer and also what 'digital' does to how we understand the past, the authors introduce the many different tools and developing approaches in Big Data for historical and humanistic scholarship, show how to use them, what to be wary of, and discuss the kinds of questions and new perspectives this new macroscopic perspective opens up. Originally authored 'live' online with ongoing feedback from the wider digital history community, Exploring Big Historical Data breaks new ground and sets the direction for the conversation into the future. Exploring Big Historical Data should be the go-to resource for undergraduate and graduate students confronted by a vast corpus of data, and researchers encountering these methods for the first time. It will also offer a helping hand to the interested individual seeking to make sense of genealogical data or digitized newspapers, and even the local historical society who are trying to see the value in digitizing their holdings"--

This textbook covers the concepts, theories, and implementations of text mining and natural language processing (NLP). It covers both the theory and the practical implementation, and every concept is explained with simple and easy-to-understand examples. It consists of three parts. In Part 1 which consists of three chapters details about basic concepts and applications of text mining are provided, including eg sentiment analysis and opinion mining. It builds a strong foundation for the reader in order to understand the remaining parts. In the five chapters of Part 2, all the core concepts of text analytics like feature engineering, text classification, text clustering, text summarization, topic mapping, and text visualization are covered. Finally, in Part 3 there are three chapters covering deep-learning-based text mining, which is the dominating method applied to practically all text mining tasks nowadays. Various deep learning approaches to text mining are covered, includingmodels for processing and parsing text, for lexical analysis, and for machine translation. All three parts include large parts of Python code that shows the implementation of the described concepts and approaches. The textbook was specifically written to enable the teaching of both basic and advanced concepts from one single book. The implementation of every text mining task is carefully explained, based Python as the programming language and Spacy and NLTK as Natural Language Processing libraries. The book is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students in computer science and engineering

The joys of big data for historians -- The DH moment -- Data mining tools : techniques and visualizations -- Topic modeling : a hands-on adventure in big data -- Making your data legible : a basic introduction to visualizations -- Network analysis -- Networks in practice.

We study how organizational boundaries affect pricing decisions using comprehensive data from a large U.S. airline. We document that the firm's advanced pricing algorithm, utilizing inputs from different organizational teams, is subject to multiple biases. To quantify the impacts of these biases, we estimate a structural demand model using sales and search data. We recover the demand curves the firm believes it faces using forecasting data. In counterfactuals, we show that correcting biases introduced by organizational teams individually have little impact on market outcomes, but coordinating organizational outcomes leads to higher prices/revenues and increased dead-weight loss in the markets studied
