"Teaching Toward Freedom: Supporting Voices and Silence in the English Classroom promotes teaching and learning that celebrate diversity and community through the systematic integration of traditionally "non-academic" voices and mindfulness-based, contemplative practices. By examining current scholarship and discussing novels and memoirs whose power is tied to freedom of expression, this book argues that teachers should allow students to use and explore the various rhetorical registers that they bring to the classroom. Through an innovative combination of narrative, argument, and literary analysis, the book skillfully connects conversations about linguistic diversity and contemplative approaches in order to foster a compassionate space for learning in the college-level English classroom"-- Entering the university -- Teaching writing -- Vernacular voices and the preservation of the spirit -- Three African American scholars and two African American stories told in the vernacular -- Double messages : the complications of academic discourse, imitation, and plagiarism -- Embracing the contemplative life in the classroom. Part one -- Embracing the contemplative life in the classroom. Part two, Room for silence -- Danger time and deep ecology

Traditionally, Aristotle is held to believe that philosophical contemplation is valuable for its own sake, but ultimately useless. In this volume, Matthew D. Walker offers a fresh, systematic account of Aristotle's views on contemplation's place in the human good. The book situates Aristotle's views against the background of his wider philosophy, and examines the complete range of available textual evidence (including neglected passages from Aristotle's Protrepticus). On this basis, Walker argues that contemplation also benefits humans as perishable living organisms by actively guiding human life activity, including human self-maintenance. Aristotle's views on contemplation's place in the human good thus cohere with his broader thinking about how living organisms live well. A novel exploration of Aristotle's views on theory and practice, this volume will interest scholars and students of both ancient Greek ethics and natural philosophy. It will also appeal to those working in other disciplines

"This is not the H. P. Lovecraft we thought we knew. Lovecraft is a great writer and a famously difficult thinker, and Pedersens provocative and highly original argument is that he is fundamentally a figure in the European Romantic tradition, with close affiliations to Wordsworth and Coleridge, Byron and (especially) Keats. This is a fascinating book about which serious readers of Lovecraft will be arguing for years."(Professor Darryl Jones, Trinity College, Dublin)This book offers a fresh perspective on the twentieth-century American weird fiction author H. P. Lovecraft and argues that the gentleman of Providence was a Romantic at heart. The book takes a philosophical approach and draws on Lovecrafts essays, fiction and letters as well as poetry. Along the way, the reader is introduced to Lovecrafts relationship with wonder, his aversion towards the cold light of reason, his teetotalism and his love of gardens, contemplation, joy, the dramatic, the strange, the foreign and the beautiful. Also, the reader is privy to an exploration of Lovecrafts wonder-evoking tropes, the idea of dark wonder and what he called the Dunsanian Conjuration Foreword / S. T. Joshi -- On Lovecraft's lifelong relationship with wonder -- Howard Phillips Lovecraft : Romantic on the nightside -- "Now will you be good?" : Lovecraft, teetotalism, and philosophy -- Lovecraft's garden : heart's blood at the root -- Weird fiction : a catalyst for wonder -- H. P. Lovecraft and the Dunsanian conjuration.

Petrarch's De vita solitaria provides an excellent insight into the history of ideas of the 14th and 15th centuries, because of its wide-ranging theme -- the conflict between vita activa and vita contemplativa -- and its immense popularity, attested by more than 120 manuscripts. This commentary on the first book of De vita solitaria explores how early humanism dealt with both the important medieval tradition of contemplative writing and the classical otium -tradition. The commentary's detailed analysis of this process forms thus a significant contribution to our knowledge of the development of early humanist thought. Apart from the commentary, De vita solitaria (Book 1) is presented here for the first time in a critical edition. It includes an apparatus fontium and an index nominum, designed to facilitate the further exploration of his work
