    "Poverty and precarity are among the most pressing social issues of today and have become a significant thematic focus and analytical tool in the humanities in the last two decades. This volume brings together an international group of scholars who investigate conceptualisations of poverty and precarity from the perspective of literary and cultural studies as well as linguistics. Analysing literature, visual arts and news media from across the postcolonial world, they aim at exploring the frameworks of representation that impact affective and ethical responses to disenfranchised groups and precarious subjects.     Graphic displays such as charts, graphs, diagrams, and maps play in important role today in the design and presentation of instructional materials education. There is also a strong need in scientific, technical and administrative fields to visually present facts, laws, principles etc. The increasing use of computer-based learning environments has also become an important field where the visual presentation of information plays a central role. Despite the importance of graphical displays as a means of communication and the fact that research about learning and cognition has advanced rapidly in the past two decades, the comprehension of graphics is still a rather unexplored area. The comprehension of graphics is not only a stimulating topic in the fields of science and instructional psychology, but also in related disciplines such as semiotics, and artificial intelligence. Research on the comprehension of graphics complements the scientific investigation of cognitive processes in text comprehension, which has contributed much to our understanding of human cognition and learning. Ultimately, a better understanding of the cognitive processes involved in the comprehension of graphics will have an impact not only on cognitive theory, but also on educational practice

    Who testifies on US trade agreements before Congress and what do they say? We examine the content of Congressional testimony on US trade agreements, and the selection process which determines who testifies in the first place. We find that testimony is systematically tilted towards a sunny view of trade's positive economic effects, while import competition and offshoring are generally downplayed. We argue that trade's supporters strategically frame their motives for supporting trade agreements, and that pro-trade committee chairs' decisions on who testifies further skew testimony away from the distributive consequences of globalization within the United States. Congressional hearings on trade agreements therefore represent a key site where the influence of dominant pro-trade interests is both revealed and reinforced.

    Der vorliegende Band kombiniert die Beiträge des 2ten und 3ten Melammu Workshops. – Der 2te Workshop nimmt die Entwicklung der Literatur und literarische Texte in den Fokus: Warum gibt es Veränderungen in der Keilschrift-Literatur und wie kann man diese Veränderungen in der Tradition der Genres erklären? – Das Melammu-Projekt widmet sich der Kontinuität, der Transformation und der Expansion der meopotamischen Kultur mittels komparativer Analysen des textlichen und des ikonographischen Materials und der Identifikation von Parallelen zur und Einflussnahmen auf die Welt der klassischen Antike. Um zu erörtern, wie diese Parallelen und Bezüge zustande kamen, widmet sich der 3te Melammu-Workshop den Individuen, die dies Wissen übermittelten. Land- und Seerouten, die Ost und West verbanden, waren Verbindungslinien für Menschen und Güter und beförderten die Verbreitung von Ideen und Technologien in beide Richtungen. Ein Studium der Itinerarien und der Bedingungen des Reisens ist entscheidend für das Verständnis der Wege des kulturellen Austausches. The present volume combines the contributions of the 2nd and 3rd Melammu Workshops. The 2nd Workshop focusses on the development of literature and literary texts: Why are there and how can we explain literary changes in the tradition of the sub-corpus we are working on? The Melammu Project is dedicated to study the continuity, transformation and expansion of Mesopotamian culture by means of comparative analyses of the documentary and iconographic materials and the identification of parallels and mutual influences, in particular with the Classical world. In order to study how these parallels came into being, the 3rd Melammu Workshop focusses on the individuals who transmitted this knowledge. Land and sea-routes linking the East with the West were conduits for people and goods and fostered the spread of ideas and technologies in both directions. A study of the itineraries and the conditions of travel is crucial to an understanding of the ways of cultural exchange
