The Emergence of Neuroscience and the German Novel: Poetics of the Brain revises the dominant narrative about the distinctive psychological inwardness and introspective depth of the German novel by reinterpreting the novel’s development from the perspective of the nascent discipline of neuroscience, the emergence of which is coterminous with the rise of the novel form. In particular, it asks how the novel’s formal properties—stylistic, narrative, rhetorical, and figurative—correlate with the formation of a neuroscientific discourse, and how the former may have assisted, disrupted, and/or intensified the medical articulation of neurological concepts. This study poses the question: how does this rapidly evolving field emerge in the context of nineteenth century cultural practices and what were the conditions for its emergence in the German-speaking world specifically? Where did neuroscience begin and how did it broaden in scope? And most crucially, to what degree does it owe its existence to literature?

Stern on women and role-playing identity, etc. 'Impeccably researched and rigorously argued, Weedon’s book offers a precise historical study of a period and culture when adaptation practices and transmedia storytelling were just beginning to take shape as a fascinating anticipation of the twenty-first century.' – Timothy Corrigan, Professor Emeritus of English, Cinema Studies, and History of Art, University of Pennsylvania, USA. This book explores the significance of professional writers and their role in developing British storytelling in the 1920s and 1930s, and their influence on the poetics of today’s transmedia storytelling. Modern techniques can be traced back to the early twentieth century when film, radio and television provided professional writers with new formats and revenue streams for their fiction. The book explores the contribution of four British authors, household names in their day, who adapted work for film, television and radio. Although celebrities between the wars, Clemence Dane, G.B. Stern, Hugh Walpole and A.E.W Mason have fallen from view. The popular playwright Dane, witty novelist Stern and raconteur Walpole have been marginalised for being German, Jewish, female or gay and Mason’s contribution to film has been overlooked also. It argues that these and other vocational authors should be reassessed for their contribution to new media forms of storytelling. The book makes a significant contribution in the fields of media studies, adaptation studies, and the literary middlebrow.

This book explores how an audience of men serving sentences in an English prison responded to viewing five contemporary British prison films. It examines how media representations of prison vary in style and content, how film can influence public attitudes, and how this affects people in prison. The book explains the ways in which film acts as a power resource, presenting an ideological vision of criminal justice. The audience used these films to map the social terrain of prison, including issues of power and resistance; race and racism; corruption and the illicit economy; and staff-prisoner relationships, themes which are explored in the films screened. The authors argue that media consumption is one of the ways in which people in prison construct and maintain an ideal of the prisoner culture and what it is to be a ‘prisoner’. The book also reveals the ways in which audience members’ media choices and readings are part of the ongoing process of constructing their self-identity. This book illuminates the complex ways in which media consumption is an integral part of social power, cultural formation and identity construction. Recognising and engaging with audiencehood offers one potential route for supporting more progressive penal practice. This book speaks to those interested in prisons, crime, media and culture, and film studies. Jamie Bennett is Senior Civil Servant in the Ministry of Justice, UK, a Research Associate at University of Oxford, and a former prison governor. He has published widely on topics including prison management, therapeutic prison regimes, and media representations of prisons. He has previously published six books including The Working Lives of Prison Managers (2015) and The Penal System: An Introduction (sixth edition, 2019). Victoria Knight is Senior Research Fellow at De Montfort University, UK. Her publications include Remote Control: Television in Prisons (2016) and the edited collection The Prison Cell (2020).

Längst sind hasserfüllte Artikulationen daher Gegenstand medienpädagogischer Lernarrangements, die u.a. mittels sogenannter „Gegenbotschaften“ auf die Förderung von Medienkritikfähigkeit abzielen. Doch was lernen Jugendliche in der medienkritischen Auseinandersetzung mit Hasskommentaren, Propagandavideos und Gegenbotschaften? Anhand von Videoaufnahmen wird in diesem Buch das medienkritische Lernen Jugendlicher zwischen Hass- und Gegenrede empirisch rekonstruiert. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf den Perspektiven Jugendlicher, die mittels des Einsatzes von Körperkameras methodisch spezifisch berücksichtigt werden. Neben theoretischen Überlegungen und empirischen Befunden zur Medienkritikfähigkeit Jugendlicher bietet der Band didaktische Ansätze für die Gestaltung medienbildnerischer Lernarrangements im Kontext von Hass- und Gegenrede im Internet. Der Autor Julian Ernst (Dr. phil.) ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Zentrum „Bildung und digitaler Wandel“ der Pädagogischen Hochschule Zürich.

Vor diesem Hintergrund gilt es zunächst medienspezifische Strategien in ihrer Vielfalt sowie historischen Entwicklung kritisch zu befragen, die zu rassistischem Denken und rassistischer Politik beigetragen haben und bis heute beitragen. Die Kategorie Genre als eine ambivalente und komplexe Wahrnehmungs- und Sinngebungsstruktur an der Schnittstelle von Produktion, Rezeption und Ästhetik bietet sich besonders an, um sich medientechnologischen Traditionen und Mitteln anzunähern, die Race politisch wirksam machen, verschiedene Ideologien bedienen, Affekte produzieren und zugleich jedoch immer auch Widerstände oder neue Sichtweisen und Artikulationsformen hervorbringen. Der Band versammelt unterschiedliche theoretische und analytische Ansätze, die anhand ausgewählter Gegenstände Einblicke in die Geschichte des Wechselbezugs von Genre und Race gewähren sowie sich mit dessen internationaler und nationalspezifischer Akzentuierung beschäftigen, wobei stets grundsätzliche Fragen nach dem Verhältnis von Visualität und Race sowie die epistemologische Kraft des Blickes im Fokus stehen. In fünfzehn Einzelstudien werden gesellschaftliche Leitvorstellungen, Wahrnehmungsmuster und Kommunikationsformen erforscht, die seit dem 15. Jahrhundert durch Praktiken des Übersetzens etabliert werden und bis in die Gegenwart von prägender Bedeutung sind. Behandelt werden etwa jiddische und kymrische Bibelüber­setzungen, tamilische und zapotekische Missionstexte sowie französische und arabische Kartenmaterialien. This interdisciplinary open-access collection addresses the multifarious concepts and methods of translation as a central and ubiquitous cultural technique of the Early Modern period (1450–1800). It features fifteen studies on the guiding principles, perception patterns, and communication forms that have taken root in society since the fifteenth century through the practices of translation and are still of defining importance today. The research spectrum encompasses such diverse topics as Yiddish and Welsh translations of the Bible, Tamil and Zapotec mission texts, and French and Arabic cartographic material.

    Moderne Computerspiele erschaffen komplexe Welten, in denen sich Spielende nicht selten gezwungen sehen, kontrovers zu handeln oder schwierige moralische Entscheidungen zu treffen. Aber Spiele werden heute nicht mehr nur aktiv rezipiert. Insbesondere auf YouTube schauen Millionen Menschen täglich Videos von ‚Let’s-Playern‘, die ihre eigenen Spielerlebnisse aufzeichnen und live kommentieren. Dabei erschließen die Videoproduzenten*innen das ethische Potential der gezeigten Spiele, indem sie deren Möglichkeitsräume erkunden und ihre subjektiven Empfindungen und Entscheidungsprozesse verbalisieren. Die Rezipient*innen greifen die Inhalte der Videos wiederum auf und diskutieren darüber in den Userkommentaren. Auf diese Weise vollzieht sich eine massenhafte Distribution und Diskussion von moralischen Ideen, die weit über den virtuellen Raum YouTubes hinaus wirkt. Sebastian Fischer beschreibt dieses Phänomen ‚moralischer Let’s-Plays‘, indem er die Darstellung einiger der populärsten ethischen Computerspiele der vergangenen Jahre analysiert. Die Arbeit liefert nicht nur eine erste Deskription dieses bislang unerforschten Themas, sondern leitet auch Schlussfolgerungen ab, die sich auf den allgemeinen Prozess moralischen Spielens übertragen lassen. Der Autor Als Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaftler, Journalist und Fotograf hat Sebastian Fischer über zwei Jahrzehnte Erfahrung im Mediensektor gesammelt. Der Fokus seiner Forschung liegt auf Massenphänomenen des digitalen Zeitalters. Gegenwärtig arbeitet er als Marketing Manager.

    This open access handbook presents a multidisciplinary and multifaceted perspective on how the ‘digital’ is simultaneously changing Russia and the research methods scholars use to study Russia. It provides a critical update on how Russian society, politics, economy, and culture are reconfigured in the context of ubiquitous connectivity and accounts for the political and societal responses to digitalization. In addition, it answers practical and methodological questions in handling Russian data and a wide array of digital methods.     Glaubwürdigkeit und Vertrauen sind zentrale Ziele der Kommunikation von Corporate Social Responsibility - der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortungsübernahme von Unternehmen. Nachhaltigkeitsberichte gelten dabei als das wichtigste persuasive Kommunikationsmedium, wobei die Rolle der visuellen Argumentation hierbei noch wenig erforscht ist. Sophie Heins geht in ihrer umfassenden designrhetorischen Studie der Frage nach, mit welchen visuell-rhetorischen Mitteln Glaubwürdigkeit in Nachhaltigkeitsberichten erzeugt wird. Dazu analysiert sie die Wirkungen der Designelemente sowie ihr Zusammenspiel, und stellt visuelle Argumentationsarten vor, die eine neue Sicht auf Nachhaltigkeitsberichte ermöglichen.
