September 2001. Mit Beiträgen von Bettina Bannasch, Dorothee Birke, Vittoria Borsò, Claudia Brodsky, Michael Butter, Günter Butzer, Angelika Corbineau-Hoffmann, Gesa von Essen, Ursula Hennigfeld, Alexander Honold, Aurelia Kalisky, Thomas Klinkert, Peter Kuon, Monika Neuhofer, Günter Oesterle, Rolf G. "Using the Palestinian exilic displacements as a critical tool and compass to find intersecting points of reference with the Caribbean, Indian, African, Chinese, and Pakistani dispersions, Writing Displacement studies the metamorphosis of the politics of home and identity amongst different migrant nationals subsequent to the end of WWII and into the start of the new millennium. This book troubles the ideas of citizenship and national belonging and celebrates the freedom to be 'out of place' which opens doors for and promotes rediscovery of materials that have been repressed or 'pushed aside' in cultural translation. Displacement falls somewhere between nationalism and nomadology, challenging racism and mental ghettoisation; writing displacement opens doors for critical and aesthetic distance and for balancing the central authority between past and present, tradition and modernity. From Sam Selvon to Salman Rushdie and Monica Ali, Edward Said to Homi Bhabha and Stuart Hall, Writing Displacement reroutes filiation to affiliation"-- "Using the Palestinian exilic displacements as a tool and compass to find intersecting points of reference with the Caribbean, Indian, African, Chinese, and Pakistani dispersions, Writing Displacement studies the metamorphosis of the politics of home and identity amongst different migrant nationals from the end of WWII into the new millennium"-- Machine generated contents note: -- Placing Displacement: An IntroductionChapter 1: Writing DisplacementChapter 2: Displacing Cultural IdentityChapter 3: The Windrush Generation: Remapping England and Its LiteratureChapter 4: Masala Fish: Cultural Synthesis and Literary AdventuringPromoting Cultural Diversity/Multiculturalism Post 9/11: A Conclusion

Biographical note: Udo J. Hebel, University of Regensburg. The volume extends scholary explorations of U.S. American cultures of memory, commemorative identity construction, and the politics of remembrance into the topical field of transnational and comparative American studies. The interdisciplinary range of issues and materials engaged includes literary texts, personal accounts, and cultural performances from colonial times through the immediate present, the significance of war monuments and ethnic memorials in Europe, Asia, and the U.S., films about 9/11, public sculptures and the fine arts, American world’s fairs as international sites of memory. Review text: "Transnational American Memories is an ambitious book which unites concepts of Memory Studies with those of transnational American Studies. [...] The innovative contributions succeed in bringing Memory Studies beyond the focus on local or national sites without losing the idea of American national identity formation. Thus the book becomes particularly useful for scholars of American Studies, and those who focus on Memory Studies will find many turns and conclusions of the texts surprising and enriching."Andrea Zittlau in: KULT online 27/2011 "Transnational American Memories is an extremely valuable addition to the innovative 0Media and Cultural Memory0 series [...]: It provides a broad overview over the current scholarship and gives a glimpse of the transnational future of memory studies."Kathleen Loock in: Amerikastudien/ American Studies 3/2009 "[...] this is a rich, thoughtful, and thought-provoking collection – very competently edited and handsomely produced. It will prove an important resource for students and scholars of Amercian literature, history, and culture; and it is also of considerable interest to students and teachers of postcolonial literature and narrative theory."Jakob Lothe in: American Studies in Scandinavia, Vol. 42, 4/ 2010
