"In recent decades, the insight that narration shapes our perception of reality has inspired and influenced the most innovative historical accounts. Focusing on new research, this volume explores the history of non-elite populations in cities from Caracas to Vienna, and Paris to Belgrade. Narration is central to the theme of each contribution, whether as a means of description, a methodological approach, or basic story telling. This book brings together research that both asks classical socio-historical questions and takes narration seriously, engaging with novels, films, local history accounts, petitions to municipal authorities, and interviews with alternative cinema activists"--Provided by publisher

Cinematic Urbanism presents an urban history of modernity and postmodernity through the lens of cinema while arguing that urbanism cannot be understood outside the space of the celluloid city. Nezar AlSayyad traces the dissolution of the boundary between real and reel through time and space via a series of films that represent different modernities. He contrasts the "rational" European city of early twentieth-century industrial modernity as portrayed by Berlin: Symphony of a Big City (1927) with its American counterpart in Modern Times (1936). He illustrates the different forms of small town life and an urbanizing modernity across the Atlantic as exemplified by Cinema Paradiso (1989) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Using Metropolis (1927) and Brazil (1985), he shows how utopian ideals harbour within them their dystopian realities, while Jacques Tati's nostalgia for tradition in Mon Oncle (1958) and Playtime (1967) reveals a cynical modernity and a rebelling against its idealism.

"..it is Hollywood that merits urban scholarship!"

How has American cinema engaged with the rapid transformation of American cities and urban culture since the 1960s? And what role have films and film industries played in shaping and mediating cultural and economic change in the 'postindustrial' city? This interdisciplinary collection argues that cinema and cities have become increasingly intertwined in the era of urban branding, cultural industries, and 'creative cities'. Spanning four decades of US urban history, from decline and crisis in the 1970s and 1980s to neoliberal restructuring, galloping globalization and accelerated gentrification in the 1990s and beyond, the book considers the complex, evolving relationship between moving image cultures and the urban environment in key cinematic cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Detroit. Across twelve chapters, the contributors address these questions via textual and industrial perspectives, analyzing questions of narrative, aesthetics, and genre as well as contexts of production, exhibition and reception. Drawing together critical concepts from film and urban studies, the chapters view contemporary cinema through the political and social geographies of class, race, gender, and sexuality. From Hollywood blockbusters to independent cinema, romantic comedy to science fiction, key films discussed include Frances Ha, Fruitvale Station, Desperately Seeking Susan, The King of New York, Inception, Doctor Strange, Only Lovers Left Alive and The Friends of Eddie Coyle

-- Cinematic Urbanism presents an urban history of modernity and postmodernity through the lens of cinema while arguing that urbanism cannot be understood outside the space of the celluloid city. Using Metropolis (1927) and Brazil (1985), he shows how utopian ideals harbour within them their dystopian realities, while Jacques Tati's nostalgia for tradition in Mon Oncle (1958) and Playtime (1967) reveals a cynical modernity and a rebelling against its idealism Introduction: the cinematic city and the quest for the modern -- Industrial modernity : the flâneur and the tramp in the early twentieth century city -- Urbanizing modernity : the traditional cinematic small town -- Orwellian modernity : utopia/dystopia and the city of the future past -- Cynical modernity, or the modernity of cynicism -- From postmodern condition to cinematic city -- Voyeuristic modernity : the lens, the screen and the city -- The modernity of the sophisticate and the misfit : the city through different eyes -- An alternative modernity : race, ethnicity and the urban experience -- Exurban postmodernity : utopia, simulacra and hyper-reality
