For a century Harlem has been celebrated as the capital of black America, a thriving center of cultural achievement and political action. At a crucial moment in Harlem's history, as gentrification encroaches, the author untangles the myth and meaning of Harlem's legacy. Examining the epic Harlem of official history and the personal Harlem that begins at her front door, she introduces us to a wide variety of characters, past and present. At the heart of their stories, and her own, is the hope carried over many generations, hope that Harlem would be the ground from which blacks fully entered America's democracy

"The Hellenistic period of Greek history was famously one of change, featuring intense political and military struggle, and subsequent cultural adjustment. One aspect of this cultural shift was the employment--or deployment--of ruler cult, in which communities voted or decided to offer honors and titles, and sometimes other benefits, to representatives of certain dynasties. Modeled on the earlier civic practice of creating a cult for important mythological or divine figures, the more modern ruler cult signified which figures were important to a city and its region, and represented the city's appreciation for favors or military services offered. Divine Honors for Mortal Men in Greek Cities : the Early Cases presents Christian Habicht's argument for the handling of these ruler cults in mainland Greece and the islands, relying upon contemporary evidence notably in the form of local inscriptions, down to 240 BC. The first part of the volume presents individual case studies, city by city, with detailed inscriptional and bibliographic evidence. The second part is a consideration of what that evidence shows us: how cult worked, who in the city was responsible for its establishment, how a cult might change as new political winds blew. Christian Habicht offers a consideration of cults according to the individual kings involved, grouped according to their dynastic families. The author takes as his viewpoint the person or city offering the cult, rather than the recipient as is more common in the scholarly literature"--Provided by publisher

"In recent decades, the insight that narration shapes our perception of reality has inspired and influenced the most innovative historical accounts. Focusing on new research, this volume explores the history of non-elite populations in cities from Caracas to Vienna, and Paris to Belgrade. Narration is central to the theme of each contribution, whether as a means of description, a methodological approach, or basic story telling. This book brings together research that both asks classical socio-historical questions and takes narration seriously, engaging with novels, films, local history accounts, petitions to municipal authorities, and interviews with alternative cinema activists"--Provided by publisher

"Mark Firth is a home builder in Howland, Massachusetts in the early 2000s who, after being swindled by a finanical advisor, feels opportunity passing him by. In the paranoid days after 9/11, a New York money manager, Philip Hadi, moves his family to Howland and hires Mark to turn his his house into a "secure location." When Howland's first selectman passes away suddenly, Hadi runs for office, and begins subtly transforming the town in his image. The collision of these two men and their very different worlds -- rural vs urban, middle class vs wealthy -- propels Jonathan Dee's new novel to a haunting conclusion. This is a novel that captures our fraught moment, but is timeless in its depiction of the American family"--
