Criticism on the textual and iconographic construction of the city is extensive, yet the problem of historical change in representations of "the urban" has received little attention. Believing traditional accounts are limited by their reflection of a specific historical moment, Joan Ramon Resina and Dieter Ingenschay focus, by contrast, on transition. In essays written for this volume, scholars of literary and visual studies, the history of architecture, cultural theory, and urban geography explore the ways perceptual or conceptual paradigms of the city supersede or replace others, while at the same time retaining the "after-image" of what went before. The writers touch on a wide variety of issues related to contemporary urban cultures as they journey through cities including New York, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Tijuana, Berlin, and London. Drawing on the work of Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, Camilo José Cela, Honoré de Balzac, and Alfred Stieglitz, their approach is broadly cultural rather than technical. After-Images of the City takes into account the intrinsic instability of the image and reveals that representations of the modern metropolis cannot be fixed in time and history

"In 1980, after decades of guerrilla warfare against colonial rule, Rhodesia earned its hard-won independence from Britain. Less than two years later, Robert Mugabe's rise to power in the new Zimbabwe brought an explosion of violence across the land that reverberates to this day." "In The Stone Virgins, author Yvonne Vera examines the dissident movement - a subject long taboo among her countrymen - from the perspective of two sisters living in a small township outside of Bulawayo. She explores their quest for dignity and a centered existence against a backdrop of appalling brutality; the rival tension between township and city life; and the twin instincts of survival and love that motivate them in the face of mankind's capacity for terror, beauty, and sacrifice." "Weaving historical fact into a story of grand passions and striking endurance, Vera has fashioned a portrait of life before and after the liberation that is both radiant and haunting. The result is a powerful and provocative testament to the resilience of the Zimbabwean people that will not soon be forgotten."--BOOK JACKET.

Eyesores -- Blood -- The heart hankers -- Superfly -- A rage forever -- Stability -- Kaahumanu -- A final reunion -- Hoops and wires and plugs -- The last night of the county fair -- Souvenirs

"These eleven interrelated stories follow strands of hope and nostalgia that bind together, or fence off, the people of Windfall, Eric Shade's fictional western Pennsylvania community. In the title story, a group of unskilled laborers rerun memories of youth as they race against the dark to demolish the town's drive-in theater. A chain restaurant will take its place. Naomi dumps Dwight at the altar in "Hoops, Wires, and Plugs," but then Dwight fritters away the shamed agitation that could have propelled him beyond Windfall's stunting gravitational pull. In the final story, "Souvenirs," small-time hoods Paxson and Gus do what so many in Windfall can't: get out of town. They're off to Pittsburgh and a contract killing they hope will kick off a more rewarding life of crime."--BOOK JACKET.

After-Images of the City takes into account the intrinsic instability of the image and reveals that representations of the modern metropolis cannot be fixed in time and history.

Presents the 1925 Paris Exhibition as a key moment in updating the image of Paris as "capital of the 19th century". The text focuses on the Exhibition as a set of contesting representations of the modern city, stressing the importance of consumption and display for concepts of urban modernity. Presents the 1925 Paris Exhibition as a key moment in attempts to update the image of Paris as "capital of the 19th century". At the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Paris itself, as much as the commodity, was put on show. This text focuses on the Exhibition as a set of contesting representations of the modern city, stressing the importance of consumption and display for concepts of urban modernity. Here Le Corbusier's "Pavillon de L'Esprit Nouveau" with its "Plan Voisin" for the redesign of Paris confronted another equally up-to-date city - Paris "a woman's city", world centre of fashion and shopping. Taking as her starting point one of the most dramatic 1925 exhibits, the Rue des Boutiques which spanned the river Seine, the author analyzes the contemporary significance of the small Parisian luxury shop. She demonstrates how boutiques, conceived both as urbanism and as advertising, redefined Paris as the modern city.
