    Taking as a starting-point the cultural trauma induced by the military seizure of power in the early seventies, the author traces the evolution of Uruguayan literature in this century and its relationship to the socio-political conjuncture. The literary response to dictatorship and exile is regarded by some critics as "escapism", but the author argues that the "expanded realism" of contemporary authors represents rather an exploration of new literary trends and alternative visions of reality both within Uruguay and among the diaspora
