    Dissent and Authority in Early Modern Ireland: The English Problem from Bale to Shakespeare examines the problems that beset the Tudor administration of Ireland through a range of selected 16th century English narratives. This book is primarily concerned with the period between 1541 and 1603. This bracket provides a framework that charts early modern Irish history from the constitutional change of the island from lordship to kingdom to the end of the conquest in 1603. The mounting impetus to bring Ireland to a "complete" conquest during these years has, quite naturally, led critics to associate England's reform strategies with Irish Otherness. The preoccupation with this discourse of difference is also perceived as the "Irish Problem," a blanket term broadly used to describe just about every aspect of Irishness incompatible with the English imperialist ideologies. The term stresses everything that is "wrong" with the Irish nation--Ireland was a problem to be resolved. This book takes a different approach towards the "Irish Problem." Instead of rehashing the English government's complaints of the recalcitrant Irish and the long struggle to impose royal authority in Ireland, I posit that the "Irish Problem" was very much shaped and developed by a larger "English Problem," namely English dissent within the English government. The discussions in this book focuse on the ways in which English writers articulated their knowledge and anxieties of the "English Problem" in sixteenth-century literary and historical narratives. This book reappraises the limitations of the "Irish Problem," and argues that the crown's failure to control dissent within its own ranks was as detrimental to the conquest as the "Irish Problem," if not more so, and finally, it attempts to demonstrate how dissent translate into governance and conquest in early modern Ireland

    Vorstellungen von Reinheit und Unreinheit sind wichtige Strukturelemente antiker religiöser Traditionen. In ihrer einfachsten Form regeln sie die physische Präsenz von Individuen und Objekten in heiligen Bezirken oder an anderen Orten, an denen dies gesellschaftlich geboten scheint. Aufgrund ihres Potentials zur Regulierung von Inklusion und Exklusion haben Reinheitsvorstellungen aber immer auch eine – meist implizite – Bedeutung für die Formierung und Aufrechterhaltung menschlicher Gemeinschaften. Mit der religiösen ist damit notwendigerweise eine politische Dimension verbunden. Im vorliegenden Tagungsband wird untersucht, wie Gemeinschaften des antiken Mittelmeerraumes und ihre Führer mit diesem politischen Potential umgingen.

    Jean Chrysostome est l’un des témoins de l’insistance mise, dès le ive siècle, sur la radicalité de la présence du Christ dans l’eucharistie et sur la sainteté de la figure du prêtre. Dans une oeuvre aussi imposante que la sienne, beaucoup de textes peuvent évoquer une irruption du langage du sacré dans la théologie chrétienne des sacrements et des ministères. Pourtant, le coeur de la vision chrysostomienne du sacerdoce renvoie au sacrifice du Christ et à celui qu’offrent, à leur tour, les chrétiens dans leur vie ordinaire. Au sens propre, le prêtre n’accomplit aucun sacrifice. L’identité du prêtre chrétien se trouve donc pour une certaine part dans la médiation qu’il accomplit à l’égard des sacrements, mais plus encore dans l’expression qu’il donne au ministère hiérarchique. Ainsi, la spécificité du ministère ordonné dans la vie de l’Église s’exprime principalement dans les fonctions de gouvernement et d’enseignement. John Chrysostom is a witness of the insistence, from the fourth century, on the radicality of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist and on the holiness of the priest’s figure. In a work as imposing as his, many texts can allude to an irruption of the language of the sacred in Christian theology of sacraments and ministries. Yet the heart of the Chrysostomian vision of the priesthood refers to the sacrifice of Christ and to the sacrifice which the Christians offer in their ordinary lives. In the literal sense, the priest makes no sacrifice. To some extent, the identity of the Christian priest is thus found in the mediation he carries out with regard to the sacraments, but even more in the expression he gives to the hierarchical ministry. Thus, the specificity of the ordained ministry in the life of the Church is expressed principally in the functions of government and teaching.

    This paper discusses the concept of authority in global governance by unpacking the components that characterize its various notions. These components are the triadic relationship between power, legitimacy, and the reference to public interests, and how they are embedded in the constellation between public and private. After clarifying each of these components, the article applies them to business enterprises - key actors in global governance -, focusing on the issue area of business and human rights. The paper shows that business authority does not neatly fit into the public-private distinction that is pervasive in conceptions of global governance and the international human rights regime. Instead, businesses have public and private, as well as hybrid, roles in global governance. Business authority then forms a peculiar third, next to public authority and private authority. Accordingly, the paper suggests extending the two-pole constellation of public and private into a three-pole constellation, with business building a peculiar third position between and beyond the public and the private. This approach allows furthering the understanding of business authority in global governance in particular and the concept of authority in global governance more generally. Den pluralen Perspektiven auf Autorität in der Global Governance sind vier Elemente gemeinsam. Autorität lässt sich demnach bestimmen als ein triadisches Verhältnis zwischen Macht, Legitimität und dem Bezug auf öffentliche Interessen. Diese Triade ist eingebettet in eine vermittelte Konstellation von Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit. Nach einer konzeptuellen Klärung dieser vier Elemente von Autorität diskutiert das Paper Unternehmen als zentrale Governance-Akteure im Themenbereich Wirtschaft und Menschenrechte. Deutlich wird, dass die Autorität von Unternehmen sich nicht in die Unterscheidung von öffentlich und privat einordnen lässt, die gleichwohl für die Governance-Forschung und für das internationale Menschenrechtsregime prägend ist. Vielmehr haben Unternehmen sowohl öffentliche als auch private und darüber hinaus auch hybride Governance-Rollen inne. Ausgehend von den Konzepten privater Autorität und öffentlicher Autorität schlägt das Paper daher vor, Unternehmens-Autorität als eine dritte Form zu verstehen, die gleichzeitig zwischen und jenseits von Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit situiert ist. Diese Perspektive trägt zu einem erweiterten Verständnis von Unternehmens-Autorität in der Global Governance bei und erlaubt sowohl konzeptuelle als auch normative Anknüpfungspunkte.

    Vorstellungen von Reinheit und Unreinheit sind wichtige Strukturelemente antiker religiöser Traditionen. In ihrer einfachsten Form regeln sie die physische Präsenz von Individuen und Objekten in heiligen Bezirken oder an anderen Orten, an denen dies gesellschaftlich geboten scheint. Aufgrund ihres Potentials zur Regulierung von Inklusion und Exklusion haben Reinheitsvorstellungen aber immer auch eine – meist implizite – Bedeutung für die Formierung und Aufrechterhaltung menschlicher Gemeinschaften. Mit der religiösen ist damit notwendigerweise eine politische Dimension verbunden. Im vorliegenden Tagungsband wird untersucht, wie Gemeinschaften des antiken Mittelmeerraumes und ihre Führer mit diesem politischen Potential umgingen.
