Arkadii dreamed of becoming an astronomer, but his wartime experience and training led him to work as a translator and editor of Japanese literature. Boris intended to become a physicist, trained as an astronomer, and ended up as a computer specialist at Pulkovo Observatory. This common thread of astronomy turns out to be fantastically important for understanding their works, as their most important ones are experiments in cosmology, and their shared expertise is instrumental in their construction of literary hellscapes. This book explores how the Strugatskiis’ cosmological explorations are among the most fundamental elements of their art. It examines also how these explorations connect to their predecessors in the Russian literary tradition—particularly to the poetry of Pushkin

    In seiner kleinen, aber einflußreichen Schrift "Galileo as a Critic of the Arts" von 1954 hat Erwin Panofsky die künstlerischen Vorlieben Galileis mit dessen Vorstellung von Raum, Licht und Kosmos verbunden. Horst Bredekamp, Kunsthistoriker der Humboldt-Universität und Permanent Fellow des Wissenschaftskollegs zu Berlin, knüpft an diese Studie an, um Galilei jedoch nicht allein als Kunstkritiker, sondern als einen ausgebildeten Künstler zu rekonstruieren, der die Kunst des Zeichnens als ein Instrument seiner Forschungen zu nutzen verstand. Viele Gelegenheitsskizzen, vor allem aber Galileis durch das Teleskop gewonnene Mond- und Sonnenzeichnungen offenbaren, dass der Stil der Darstellungen über den Sinn des Dargestellten entschied.

    Many mysteries in art, history, and literature can be solved using “forensic” astronomy, including calculating phases of the Moon, determining the positions of the planets and stars, and identifying celestial objects. In addition to helping to crack difficult cases, such studies spark our imagination and provide a better understanding of the skies. Weather facts, volcanic studies, topography, tides, historical letters and diaries, military records and the friendly assistance of experts in related fields help with the work. Topics or cases pursued were chosen for their wide public recognition and intrigue and involve artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet; historical events such as the Battle of Marathon, Julius Caesar's invasion of Britain, and World War II; and literary authors such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Mary Shelley. For each historical event influenced by astronomy, there is a different kind of mystery to be solved. For example, how can the Moon help to explain the sinking of the Titanic and a turning point of the American Civil War? For each literary reference to astronomy, which celestial objects were being described and was the author describing an actual event?
