By locating translation, publication, and circulation along routes of 'bibliomigrancy'--the physical and virtual movement of books--Mani narrates how world literature is coded and recoded as literary works find new homes on faraway bookshelves. Mani argues that the proliferation of world literature in a society is the function of a nation's relationship with print culture--a Faustian pact with books. Moving from early Orientalist collections, to the Nazi magazine Weltliteratur, to the European Digital Library, Mani reveals the political foundations for a history of world literature that is at once a philosophical ideal, a process of exchange, a mode of reading, and a system of classification.     In der epistemologischen Umbruchzeit zwischen 'vormodern'-enzyklopädischer und 'modern'-disziplinärer Wissensordnung werden die Sachverhalte antiquarischer und philologischer Praxis neu verhandelt. Im Zentrum des Buches stehen die Materiallogiken und Narrative, die Verfügbarkeit, Beschaffenheit, Manipulierbarkeit und Temporalität der Überlieferungsobjekte bestimmen und sichern helfen, prägend für gelehrte Praxis ebenso wie literarische Imagination. Die Fallstudien (J. Hardouin, J.J. Scheuchzer, J.J. Bodmer, J.J. Winckelmann) zeigen dabei, wie – scheinbar am Rand der dominanten Wissensformationen der Epoche und spätestens von der Materialvergessenheit der historischen Wissenschaften im 19. Jahrhundert diskreditiert – Gegenstände und Verfahren der Überlieferung eine überaus produktive epistemologische Eigenständigkeit gewinnen. Was bisher als Echo längst diskreditierter Wissenspraktiken oder als Vorgeschichte moderner Fachwissenschaften betrachtet worden ist, erweist sich damit als singuläre historische Konstellation, deren Signatur eine Selbstverpflichtung auf das Besondere und Bedingte ist.
