    In my contribution, I propose to study the question of Laferrière’s adoption of new media forms, leading him to resort to the hybrid genre of the graphic novel, situated halfway between literature and visual art. Using the example of Vers d’autres rives (2019), my analysis will focus on the function of this reversal for Laferrière’s project and on the resulting shifts in the relationship between autofictional production and its positioning in relation to different spaces and cities. How does the discourse of the graphic novels evolve with respect to the artist's space and cultural belonging? To answer such questions, I will first present Laferrière's autofictional work, then situate his “graphic novels” in the Quebec and Haitian contexts, and finally share some reflections on the “autographic” narrative (Whitlock 2006) and how it constructs, through writing and images, the social and medial space of narrative. The last part will focus on the analysis of Vers d’autres rives from the point of view of self-representation, sociocultural spaces, and the contribution of the intermedial to Laferrière's autofictional, spatial and poetological reflections. ; Dans ma contribution, je me propose d’étudier la question de l’adoption de nouvelles formes médiales chez Laferrière qui l’amène à recourir au genre hybride du roman graphique, situé à mi-chemin entre littérature et art visuel. Partant de l’exemple de Vers d’autres rives (2019), mon analyse portera sur la fonction de ce revirement pour le projet laferrien et sur les déplacements qui en résultent pour la relation entre la production autofictionnelle et son positionnement par rapport à différents espaces et différentes villes. Comment le discours des romans graphiques évolue-t-il en ce qui concerne l’espace et l’appartenance culturelle de l’artiste? Pour répondre à de telles questions, je présenterai premièrement l’œuvre autofictionnelle de Laferrière pour ensuite situer ses «romans dessinés» dans le contexte québécois et haïtien, et partagerai enfin quelques ...

    The dynamics of silence and silencing in Australian writer Lily Brett’s autobiographic fiction Things Could Be Worse reflects the crisis of memory and understanding experienced by both first and second-generation Holocaust survivors within the diasporic space of contemporary Australia. It leads to issues of handling traumatic and transgenerational memory, the latter also known as postmemory (M. Hirsch), in the long aftermath of atrocities, and problematises the role of forgetting in shielding displaced identities against total dissolution of the self. This paper explores the mechanisms of remembrance and forgetting in L. Brett’s narrative by mainly focusing on two female characters, mother and daughter, whose coming to terms with (the necessary) silence, on the one hand, and articulated memories, on the other, reflects different modes of comprehending and eventually coping with individual trauma. By differentiating between several types of silence encountered in Brett’s prose (that of the voiceless victims, of survivors and their offspring, respectively) I argue that silence can equally voice and hush traumatic experience, that it is never empty, but invested with individual and collective meaning. Essentially, I contend that beside the (self)damaging effects of silence, there are also beneficial consequences of silence, in that it plays a crucial role in emplacing the displaced, rebuilding their shattered self, and contributing to their their reintegration, survival and even partial healing. ; published ; published
