    What has brought about the widespread public provision of welfare and income security within free-market liberalism? Some social scientists have regarded welfare as a preindustrial atavism; others, as a functional requirement of industrial society. Most recently, scholars have stressed the reformist actions of center-left parties during the decades following World War II, the workings of "new" post-industrial politics lately, and a multifaceted role of politics and state institutions overall. Alexander Hicks thoroughly revises these views, stressing the enduring significance of class organizations, however politically embedded, from the era of Bismark until the present. Social Democracy and Welfare Capitalism describes and explains income security programs in affluent and democratic capitalist nations, from the proto-democratic innovators of the 1880s to the globally buffeted democracies of the 1990s. Hicks's account stresses the reformist role of employee political and economic organization and derivative institutions, in particular, social democratic parties, labor unions, and neo-corporatist arrangements. These forces, arrayed as the elements of a transnational and century-long social democratic movement, give direction and continuity to the emergence, development, and contestation of income security policies

    "Susan Edmunds returns to the Progressive Era, when maternalist reformers linked early welfare initiatives to a discourse of social housekeeping that extended domestic roles into civil life. Highlighting the unique importance of a modern sentimental project of domestic reform to the formation of the U.S. welfare state, Edmunds demonstrates how modernist writers shaped--and misshaped--their domestic fiction in response to new state and market investments in the home. Crucial to Edmunds's study is the formation, during this era, of the 'domestic exterior,' a hybrid social space located at the intersection of home, market, and state and invested with the mandate to support and regulate domestic life. Edmunds demonstrates how U.S. modernists used an aesthetic of defamiliarization and grotesque distortion to map the fraught ground of the domestic exterior, and to align the unsettled space of modern domesticity with the revolutionary discourses of socialism, consumerism, and the avant-garde. The book reveals how modernists' focus on issues ranging from domestic abuse, lynching, and eugenics to educational reform, health care, and social security delineates successive points of struggle in a history of welfare state building that culminates with the New Deal and the GI Bill. Combining historical and political perspective with the social theory of Hannah Arendt, Jacques Donzelot, and Pierre Bourdieu, the book ultimately proposes that modernists forged an enduring set of terms for understanding and negotiating the widespread ambivalence, alienation, and conflict that characterize our current attachments to family life"--From publisher's description.

    What are the societal conditions of modern family life and how do protestant ethics correspond to it? Sabine Plonz shows how both questions are intertwined: She develops a concept of the family as a caring institution, including normative dimensions. She reconstructs the discourse history of German Protestantism in the welfare state as having patriarchal and anti-democratic tendencies; she thus shows how the moral order and the orders of gender, work and welfare have influenced each other. Her narrative benefits from numerous references to historical sources, and in her conclusion she reflects on both political and theological ethics of private life.This book confronts theology with the implications of its discourses, employing critical theories on hegemony, gender and religion. And it adds the dimension of morality to current research on the family, family policies, gender and the welfare state.This is a concise, intellectually committed study, which opens up new perspectives on ethics and political praxis. Was macht heute die Wirklichkeit der Familie aus und wie erklärt sich ihre Vernachlässigung im protestantisch-ethischen Diskurs? Beide Fragen hängen sachlich zusammen: Sabine Plonz entwickelt einen praxis- und regimetheoretischen Begriff der Familie, der normative Aspekte einbezieht. Sie stellt dar, wie restaurativ und patriarchalisch denkende protestantische Akteure die Ideologie- und Sozialgeschichte von Wohlfahrtsstaat und Familie beeinflusst haben; und sie zeigt, wie diese Moraldiskurse den Regimewandel spiegeln. Viele Quellenzitate machen die Rekonstruktion lebendig.
