    Exterranean concerns the extraction of stuff from the Earth, a process in which matter goes from being sub- to exterranean. By opening up a rich archive of nonmodern texts and images from across Europe, this work offers a bracing riposte to several critical trends in ecological thought. By shifting emphasis from emission to extraction, Usher reorients our perspective away from Earthrise-like globes and shows what is gained by opening the planet to depths within. The book thus maps the material and immaterial connections between the Earth from which we extract, the human and nonhuman agents of extraction, and the extracted matter with which we live daily.Eschewing the self-congratulatory claims of posthumanism, Usher instead elaborates a productive tension between the materially-situated homo of nonmodern humanism and the abstract and aggregated anthropos of the Anthropocene. In dialogue with Michel Serres, Bruno Latour, and other interdisciplinary work in the environmental humanities, Usher shows what premodern material can offer to contemporary theory. Examining textual and visual culture alike, Usher explores works by Ronsard, Montaigne, and Rabelais, early scientific works by Paracelsus and others, as well as objects, engravings, buildings, and the Salt Mines of Wieliczka. Both historicist and speculative in approach, Exterranean lays the groundwork for a comparative ecocriticism that reaches across and untranslates theoretical affordances between periods and languages

    The enmeshment of the human body with various forms of technology is a phenomenon that characterizes lived and imagined experiences in Russian arts of the modernist and postmodernist eras. In contrast to the post-revolutionary fixation on mechanical engineering, industrial progress, and the body as a machine, the postmodern, postindustrial period probes the meaning of being human not only from a physical, bodily perspective, but also from the philosophical perspectives of subjectivity and consciousness.     From the eighteenth-century abolitionist motto "Am I Not a Man and a Brother?" to the Civil Rights-era declaration "I AM a Man," antiracism has engaged in a struggle for the recognition of black humanity. It has done so, however, even as the very definition of the human has been called into question by the biological sciences. While this conflict between liberal humanism and biological materialism animates debates in posthumanism and critical race studies today, Antebellum Posthuman argues that it first emerged as a key question in the antebellum era. In a moment in which the authority of science was increasingly invoked to defend slavery and other racist policies, abolitionist arguments underwent a profound shift, producing a new, materialist strain of antislavery. Engaging the works of Douglass, Thoreau, and Whitman, and Dickinson, Cristin Ellis identifies and traces the emergence of an antislavery materialism in mid-nineteenth century American literature, placing race at the center of the history of posthumanist thought. Turning to contemporary debates now unfolding between posthumanist and critical race theorists, Ellis demonstrates how this antebellum posthumanism highlights the difficulty of reconciling materialist ontologies of the human with the project of social justice

Eva Georg liefert hierzu eine Analyse der Konstitution des (neo-)liberalen Subjekts im Kontext einer »Therapeutisierung der Gesellschaft«. Unter Bezugnahme auf Michel Foucault, die Quantenphysikerin Karen Barad und die buddhistische Philosophie nimmt sie eine Neuverhandlung der Frage nach der »Arbeit am Selbst« vor. Dabei adressiert sie ethische und feministische Debatten um die Relationalität von Subjektivität ebenso wie eine postkoloniale Perspektivierung westlicher Buddhismus-Rezeptionen - und liefert einen innovativen Beitrag für das noch junge Feld der Beratungswissenschaften, den Neuen Kritischen Materialismus sowie die Praxis von Psychotherapie, Beratung und Coaching

Eva Georg liefert hierzu eine Analyse der Konstitution des (neo-)liberalen Subjekts im Kontext einer »Therapeutisierung der Gesellschaft«. Unter Bezugnahme auf Michel Foucault, die Quantenphysikerin Karen Barad und die buddhistische Philosophie nimmt sie eine Neuverhandlung der Frage nach der »Arbeit am Selbst« vor. Dabei adressiert sie ethische und feministische Debatten um die Relationalität von Subjektivität ebenso wie eine postkoloniale Perspektivierung westlicher Buddhismus-Rezeptionen - und liefert einen innovativen Beitrag für das noch junge Feld der Beratungswissenschaften, den Neuen Kritischen Materialismus sowie die Praxis von Psychotherapie, Beratung und Coaching.

    Il existe de nombreuses raisons pour lesquelles nous pourrions penser que l’espèce humaine pourrait être en danger. On parle du réchauffement climatique qui produit d’importantes catastrophes naturelles inhabituelles ; d’armes de plus en plus destructrices ; d’attentats terroristes graves avec des armes chimiques, etc. Mais on ne peut ignorer l’une des menaces qui pèsent sur l’espèce humaine, qui est le transhumanisme ou le posthumanisme. C’est du point de vue de ce dernier sujet, sur lequel on a déjà beaucoup écrit, que nous essaierons d’axer notre analyse, en accordant une attention particulière à la question relative à l’édition de gènes (CRISPR/Cas 9). There are many reasons why we might think that the human species might be in danger. We talk about global warming which produces major unusual natural disasters; increasingly destructive weapons; serious terrorist attacks with chemical weapons, etc. But we cannot ignore one of the threats hanging over the human species, which is transhumanism or posthumanism. It is from the point of view of this last subject, on which much has already been written, that we will try to focus our analysis, paying particular attention to the question relating to gene editing (CRISPR/Cas 9).

    G. K. Chesterton, William Wordsworth, and Gerard Manley Hopkins are set in conversation with Pope Francis’s Laudato Si' (2015), to show how far those writers anticipate its animus against technocratic capitalism, but also, more surprisingly, how far Laudato Si' challenges the progressive assumptions of contemporary eco-activism. Chesterton, Wordsworth, and Hopkins do not merely foreshadow and clarify the theological stakes of a papal document. By making even single words expressive of a whole worldview (achieving what William Empson called a "compacted doctrine"), their writings prove more imaginatively affective, as well as more theologically adequate than the communicative formalities available to the theological treatise as a genre.
