    Abstract: Für das Ende der Kolonialherrschaft und die Entstehung neuer Nationen waren Heldenfiguren als Teil eines nationalen Narrativs und nationaler Erinnerung von großer Bedeutung. In der überwiegenden Zahl der Fälle verlief die Loslösung von der ehemaligen Kolonialmacht gewaltsam; die Frage nach der Bedeutung militärischer, zumeist männlicher, Formen des Heldentums und nach möglichen alternativen Heroisierungsstrategien verdient daher besondere Aufmerksamkeit
