The same computer games are played by youths all over the world, and worldwide games become matters of concern in relation to children: worries rise about addiction, violence, education, time, and economy. Yet, these concerns vary depending upon where they are situated: in families, legal contexts, industry or science. They also play out differently across countries and cultures. This situated nature of computer game concerns is generally neglected. Not in this book: It gives a detailed mosaic of the complex and multiple everyday realities of computer game concerns in relation to children, as they are variably situated throughout society and across cultures.

Gender and sex related norms within a broader understanding of sex and gender in its social dimension have an impact on us from the first to the last day of our lives. What are the effects of such norms on the education of children and adolescents? Conveyed via parents/family, school and peers, they are an inseparable part of human relations. After its favorable reception in German speaking countries the book will be also available in English. It shows that the traditional assumption of a dualistic, bipolar normativity of sex and gender, particularly in the light of the biological dimension, leads to children being taught gender-typical behavior in order to assign their own gender. The contributions in this volume explore the reasons for these practices and open the debate on the divergence between the prevailing norms and the plurality of different life plans. In addition, the book helps to disengage the topic of sex and gender from a hitherto narrowly circumscribed context of sexual orientation. The contributions point the way towards a culture of respect and mutual acceptance and show new methodological approaches by including in future research projects more than the two sexes and genders of female and male.

It focuses on both the discourse on criminality and thus the conceptualisation of criminality in various disciplines (criminology, psychiatry, and literature), and penal practice, that is, different aspects of criminal law and anti-crime policy. Diese nimmt Miriam Gutekunst in ihrer transnationalen Ethnographie zwischen Marokko und Deutschland in den Blick und begleitet Menschen durch das selektive Einreiseverfahren. Ihre Studie zeigt: In den Institutionen und Behörden wird dabei nicht nur über die Einreise entschieden, sondern es werden auch Integrationsparadigmen, Geschlechterverhältnisse sowie Vorstellungen von Liebe und Ehe verhandelt. Solche publikumswirksamen ‚Schau-Prozesse‘ zeigen, wie Gericht und Theater zu Bühnen des Politischen werden. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Recht und Theater viel fundamentaler verbunden sind, als bislang diskutiert: Sie konstituieren sich gegenseitig. Theatrale Elemente sind für das Recht unverzichtbar und umgekehrt prägen Rechtsinszenierungen das Theater. Die Beiträge des interdisziplinären Bandes analysieren diese Wechselseitigkeit und fokussieren die politische Performance im Theater und im Recht.

Zugleich kehrt mit der Rache genau dann ein überholtes Rechtsprinzip wieder, wenn das Gerichtswesen versagt. In der Literatur des Realismus eröffnet Rache dabei keine Alternative zum Recht, sondern bringt nichts als Zerstörung.

Je restriktiver die europäische Migrationspolitik in den letzten Jahrzehnten wurde, umso wichtiger wurde der »Ehegattennachzug« - oder »Familiennachzug« - als legale Möglichkeit der Einreise. Doch auch dieser Migrationsweg steht zunehmend im Fokus staatlicher Regulierung. Eine Sprachnachweispflicht sowie die Vergabe von Visa führen zu neuen Grenzsituationen weit vor Europas geographischen Außengrenzen. Diese nimmt Miriam Gutekunst in ihrer transnationalen Ethnographie zwischen Marokko und Deutschland in den Blick und begleitet Menschen durch das selektive Einreiseverfahren. In a popular sense, 'law' connotes the rules of a society, as well as the institutions that make and enforce those rules. Although laws are created and interpreted in legislatures and courtrooms by individuals with very specialized knowledge, the practice and making of law is closely tied to other systems of knowledge. To emphasize this often downplayed connection, Rehumanizing Law examines the law in relation to narrative, a fundamental mode of human expression.Randy D. Gordon illustrates the bridge between narrative and law by considering whether literature can prompt legislation. Using Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Gordon shows that literary works can figure in important regulatory measures. Discussing the rule of law in relation to democracy, he reads Melville's Billy Budd and analyzes the O.J. Simpson and Rodney King cases.This highly original and creative study reconnects the law to its narrative roots by showing how and why stories become laws.

Scheitert die Rache im Realismus? Realistische Texte imitieren das im 19. Jahrhundert in Deutschland entstehende moderne Rechtswesen: Sie wollen Rache - mit erzählerischen Mitteln - eingrenzen. Bis heute jedoch erweist sich das Versprechen der Rache als Gerechtigkeit jedoch als äußerst verführerisch.Dania Hückmann zeigt, wie die Texte von Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Theodor Fontane, Paul Heyse und Jeremias Gotthelf Rache als misslungenes Projekt präsentieren. Zugleich kehrt mit der Rache genau dann ein überholtes Rechtsprinzip wieder, wenn das Gerichtswesen versagt. In der Literatur des Realismus eröffnet Rache dabei keine Alternative zum Recht, sondern bringt nichts als Zerstörung.
