In Ghost-Watching American Modernity, María del Pilar Blanco revisits nineteenth- and twentieth-century texts from Spanish America and the United States to ask how different landscapes are represented as haunted sites. Moving from foundational fictions to Westerns, Blanco explores the diverse ways in which ghosts and haunting emerge across the American hemisphere for authors who are preoccupied with evoking the experience of geographical transformations during a period of unprecedented development. The book offers an innovative approach that seeks to understand ghosts in their local specificity, rather than as products of generic conventions or as allegories of hidden desires. Its chapters pursue formally attentive readings of texts by Domingo Sarmiento, Henry James, José Martí, W. E. B. Du Bois, Juan Rulfo, Felisberto Hernández, and Clint Eastwood. In an intervention that will reconfigure the critical uses of spectrality for scholars in U.S./Latin American Studies, narrative theory, and comparative literature, Blanco advances ghost-watching as a method for rediscovering haunting on its own terms

José María Arguedas' Peruvian short story "Warma Kuyay (Amor de niño)" culminates with the punishment of a calf, as a result of the white landlord's sexual violation of Justina, an indigenous woman. This article argues that that theoretical discussions in ecotheology offer fruitful tools for analysing the story, resonating with Andean cosmologies and enabling us to think more seriously about Arguedas' intersectional theological thoughts. "Warma Kuyay" prefaces theological ecocriticism, foreseeing current developments in liberation theology which do not just emphasise class, but other categories of identity.

This study, focusing on Latin American literature, discusses the motif of a variety of worlds as a key concept of the modern novel in terms of genre, culture, and fiction theory: the world of the modern novel is always already in contact with another one. This concept, developed against the backdrop of (literary) history, goes hand in hand with the theoretical assumption that modern novel forms have brought about a turn in genre theory. Differently from genuine poetics, genre theory is always also concerned with and contingent on a certain history/back story. Pablo Valdivia Orozco, Europa-Universität Viadrina, Frankfurt/Oder.
