French colonisers of the Third Republic claimed not to oppress but to liberate, imagining they were spreading republican ideals to the colonies to make a Greater France. In this book Simon Dell explores the various roles played by portraiture in this colonial imaginary. Anyone interested in the history of colonial Africa will have encountered innumerable portraits of African elites produced during the first half of the twentieth century, yet no book to date has focused on these ubiquitous images. Dell analyses the production and dissemination of such portraits and situates them in a complex and conflicted field of representations. Moving between European and African perspectives, the book blends history with art history to provide insights into the larger processes that were transforming the French metropole and colonies during the early twentieth century

The relationship between power and language has been a central theme in critical theory for decades now, yet there is still much to be learned about the sheer force of language in the world in which we live. In Empire of Language, Laurent Dubreuil explores the power-language phenomenon in the context of European and, particularly, French colonialism and its aftermath. Through readings of the colonial experience, he isolates a phraseology based on possession, in terms of both appropriation and haunting, that has persisted throughout the centuries. Not only is this phraseology a legacy of the past, it is still active today, especially in literary renderings of the colonial experience-but also, and more paradoxically, in anticolonial discourse. This phrase shaped the teaching of European languages in the (former) empires, and it tried to configure the usage of those idioms by the "Indigenes." Then, scholarly disciplines have to completely reconsider their discursive strategies about the colonial, if, at least, they attempt to speak up.Dubreuil ranges widely in terms of time and space, from the ancien régime through the twentieth century, from Paris to Haiti to Quebec, from the Renaissance to the riots in the banlieues. He examines diverse texts, from political speeches, legal documents, and colonial treatises to anthropological essays, poems of the Négritude, and contemporary rap, ever attuned to the linguistic strategies that undergird colonial power. Equally conversant in both postcolonial criticism and poststructuralist scholarship on language, but also deeply grounded in the sociohistorical context of the colonies, Dubreuil sets forth the conditions for an authentically postcolonial scholarship, one that acknowledges the difficulty of getting beyond a colonialism-and still maintains the need for an afterward

Bringing together leading scholars of literature, history, library studies, and communications, Print Culture Histories Beyond the Metropolis rejects the idea that print culture necessarily spreads outwards from capitals and cosmopolitan cities and focuses attention to how the residents of smaller cities, provincial districts, rural settings, and colonial outposts have produced, disseminated, and read print materials.Too often print media has been represented as an engine of metropolitan modernity. Rather than being the passive recipients of print culture generated in city centres, the inhabitants of provinces and colonies have acted independently, as jobbing printers in provincial Britain, black newspaper proprietors in the West Indies, and library patrons in "Middletown," Indiana, to mention a few examples. This important new book gives us a sophisticated account of how printed materials circulated, a more precise sense of their impact, and a fuller of understanding of how local contexts shaped reading experiences

Colonial Virtue is the first study to focus on the role played by the virtue of temperance in shaping ethical debates about early English colonialism. Kasey Evans tracks the migration of ideas surrounding temperance from classical and humanist writings through to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century applications, emphasizing the ways in which they have transcended the vocabularies of geography and time.Colonial Virtue offers fresh insights into how English Renaissance writers used temperance as a privileged lens through which to view New World morality and politically to justify colonial practices in Virginia and the West Indies. Evans uses literary texts, including The Fairie Queene and The Tempest, and sources such as sermons, dictionaries, and visual artifacts, to navigate alliances between traditional semantics and post-colonial political criticism. Beautifully written and deeply engaging, Colonial Virtue also models an expansive methodology for literary studies through its close readings and rhetorical analyses

Examines the connections between gender and colonial relations in texts by British writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and Caribbean writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: Mary Wollstonecraft, Anne Hart Gilbert, Elizabeth Hart Thwaites, Jane Austen, Jean Rhys, and Jamaica Kincaid. It argues that they were bound by their participation in a discourse about East Caribbean and British women and African-Caribbean slaves and in their desire to extend and amplify to fit different situations at the metropolitan center and its periphery in order to see and say things they otherwise would not be able to

Arguing about Empire' analyses the most divisive arguments about empire between Europe's two leading colonial powers from the age of high imperialism to the post-war era of decolonization. Focusing on the domestic contexts underlying imperial rhetoric, Arguing about Empire adopts a case-study approach, treating key imperial debates as historical episodes to be investigated in depth. The episodes in question have been selected both for their chronological range, their variety, and, above all, their vitriol. Some were straightforward disputes; others involved cooperation in tense circumstances.00 Archives and Private Papers (Britain)The National Archives, Kew, London (TNA); British Library, London; Parliamentary Archives, London; Bodleian Library, Oxford; Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, Kingś College, London; Middle East Centre Archive, St Antonyś College, Oxford; University of Exeter; Churchill Archives Centre, Cambridge; Archives and Private Papers (France); Ministère des Affaires étrangères (MAE); Papiers dágents-archives privées (PAAP); Archives Nationales (AN); Service Historique de la Marine (SHM), Vincennes Cover; Arguing about Empire: Imperial Rhetoric in Britain and France, 1882-1956; Copyright; Contents; List of Figures; List of Maps; Introduction: Arguing about Empire; 1: Tunisia, 1881-Egypt, 1882; France and Tunisia; Britain and Egypt; 2: Fashoda, 1898; Conclusion; 3: The Rhetoric of the Moroccan Crises, 1905 and 1911; Background to French Involvement; From Enmity to Entente; Morocco Takes Centre Stage; The 1905 Crisis; Towards the Second Moroccan Crisis; The 1911 Crisis; Conclusion; 4: The Chanak Crisis, 1922; Western Empire in Western Asia; Mésentente in the Near East France: The Path to WithdrawalA Widening Divide; Adjusting to Greek Defeat; The Crisis Peaks; French Silence; Conclusion; 5: World War as Imperial Crisis, I: Changing Partners, 1939-41; Phoney War, Phoney Rhetoric?; The Fall of France and After; Free France and the Future of Empire; 6: World War as Imperial Crisis, II: Allies in Conflict, 1941-5; Middle Eastern Clashes; The American Factor; The North African Landings and French Leadership Struggles; Discordant Allies; Conclusion; 7: Suez, 1956; Britain; France; Retracing the Path to Collusion; Conclusion; Conclusion; Bibliography Service Historique de la Défense-Département de lÁrmée de Terre (SHD-DAT)Archives Nationales dÓutre-Mer (ANOM); Archives départementales de lÁude, Carcassonne; Newspapers and Periodicals (Britain); Newspapers and Periodicals (France); Electronic Databases and Websites; Official Publications; Published Documents; Books; Articles and Chapters in Books; Theses; Index
