Which crises did racism suffer through the struggles of black people in the German colonial empire? During the long 30 years of colonial politics, racism became a biopolitical and society-shaping paradigm. Ulrike Hamann shows which specific articulations of racism were current at which times, and how these were connected with colonial and national policies. The point of departure of the analysis is not in the first instance theories of »race« , but rather the resistance against these, through a postcolonial reading. From the writings of Mary Church Terrell, W.E.B. Du Bois and Duala Manga Bell, a panorama of the articulations of racism in Germany emerges - but also its social counter model

Hegemonic Masculinity describes the development of the concept, the actual formulation and initial applications of the concept, the eventual reformulation and subsequent applications of that reformulation, and finally, the amplification of the reformulated concept of hegemonic masculinity. The book also includes a chapter theorizing why and how hegemonic masculinities are constructed, and the concluding chapter chronicles the prospects for social change toward more egalitarian gender relations. Hegemonic Masculinity: Formulation, Reformulation, and Amplification brings together for the first time in one volume the history of the concept as well as a discussion and examination of some of the most important research accomplished on hegemonic masculinity over the last thirty years. "Animating Black and Brown Liberation introduces a vital new tool for reading American literatures. Rooted in both ancient Egyptian ideas about life and cutting-edge theories of animacy, or levels of aliveness, this tool...ankhing...enables Datcher to examine the ways African American and Latinx literatures respond to and ultimately work to resist hegemonic forces of neoliberalism and state-sponsored oppression. Weaving together close readings and politically informed philosophical reflection, Datcher considers the work of writer-activists such as Toni Cade Bambara, Cherríe Moraga, Gloria Anzaldúa, June Jordan, Salvador Perez, and Ishmael Reed, in light of theoretical interventions by Jane Bennett, Mel Y. Chen, Bruno Latour, Michel Foucault, Paulo Freire, and Erica R. Edwards. How, he asks, can cultural production positively influence Black and Brown material conditions and mobilize collective action "off the page"? How can art-based counterpublics provide a foundation for Black and Brown community organizing? What emerges finally from Datcher's innovative analysis is a much-needed account of the links between embodied experiences of racialization, as well as a fresh vision of twentieth and twenty-first century American literature as a repository of emancipatory strategies with real-world applications" ...

Interviews with female gamers about structural sexism across the gaming landscapeWhen the Nintendo Wii was released in 2006, it ushered forward a new era of casual gaming in which video games appealed to not just the stereotypical hardcore male gamer, but also to a much broader, more diverse audience. However, the GamerGate controversy six years later, and other similar public incidents since, laid bare the internalized misogyny and gender stereotypes in the gaming community. Today, even as women make up nearly half of all gamers, sexist assumptions about the what and how of women's gaming are more actively enforced. In Gaming Sexism, Amanda C. Cote explores the video game industry and its players to explain this contradiction, how it affects female gamers, and what it means in terms of power and gender equality. Across in-depth interviews with women-identified gamers, Cote delves into the conflict between diversification and resistance to understand their impact on gaming, both casual and "core" alike. From video game magazines to male reactions to female opponents, she explores the shifting expectations about who gamers are, perceived changes in gaming spaces, and the experiences of female gamers amidst this gendered turmoil. While Cote reveals extensive, persistent problems in gaming spaces, she also emphasizes the power of this motivated, marginalized audience, and draws on their experiences to explore how structural inequalities in gaming spaces can be overcome. Gaming Sexism is a well-timed investigation of equality, power, and control over the future of technology

The way that international climate policy develops is not exclusively the result of interstate negotiations. Leaning on the work of Gramsci, civil society is regarded as a site of negotiation over that which is considered to be adequate or legitimate in terms of climate policy.Philip Bedall investigates the formation and contestation of this consensus during the 2009 World Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, on the basis of the demands of transnational NGOs and social movements, and in doing so, makes the discourse theory of Laclau and Mouffe manageable. He shows that NGOs and movements cannot be divided according to a binary of affirmative and revolutionary, and traces the affirmative essence of articulated critique with the help of the methods of deconstruction. In this way, he manages to give a nuanced evaluation of the protagonists and their demands
