    Bücher unter Verdacht - so lautete der Titel einer Ausstellung der Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, bei der Beispiele von NS-Raub- und Beutebüchern aus ihren Beständen präsentiert wurden. Der Ausstellungskatalog dokumentiert nicht nur alle gezeigten Objekte, sondern gibt in kurzen Einführungen auch Informationen zum historischen Hintergrund. Wohl fast alle wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken haben während des Dritten Reiches Bücher in ihre Bestände aufgenommen, die aus beschlagnahmten Bibliotheken von Arbeitervereinen und anderen Organisationen stammten, die bei Razzien in Buchhandlungen und Verlagen von den Nationalsozialisten entwendet und an Bibliotheken weitergegeben wurden, die Privatpersonen unter Zwang abgeben mussten oder die während des Krieges in den besetzten Gebieten geraubt wurden. Viele weitere Beispiele ließen sich nennen. Der vorliegende Ausstellungskatalog gibt einen Einblick in die zeitgenössische Praxis einer Universitätsbibliothek beim Umgang mit NS-Raub- und Beutebüchern, wie sie heute genannt werden. "Books under suspicion" was the title of an exhibition of the Göttingen State and University Library presenting examples of Nazi looted and looted books from its holdings. The exhibition catalogue not only documents all the objects on display, but also provides information on the historical background in short introductions. Probably almost all academic libraries included books in their collections during the Third Reich that came from confiscated libraries of workers' associations and other organisations, that were stolen by the National Socialists during raids on bookshops and publishing houses and given to libraries, that private individuals had to hand over under duress or that were looted in the occupied territories during the war. Many other examples could be cited. This exhibition catalogue provides an insight into the contemporary practice of a university library in dealing with Nazi looted books, as they are called today.     Memorial museums are understood as flagships of the respective country’s memory politics – in the context of transnational processes. How do big, publicly (co-)funded memorial museums that (re-)opened after 1989 in the eleven post-Communist EU member states exhibit the World War II period? Beyond a mere overview of the museum and their history the book analyzes how ‚double‘ and ‚tripple‘ occupation, Holocaust, victimhood and collaboration are represented in the permanent exhibitions and which role EU accession talks and authoritarian tendencies played and play in this. Im Vordergrund der Studie steht das Gedenkmuseum als Flaggschiff der Geschichtspolitik des jeweiligen Landes im Kontext transnationaler Prozesse. Wie wird die Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs in großen, öffentlich (mit )finanzierten Gedenkmuseen, die nach 1989 (wieder )eröffnet wurden, in den elf ‚osteuropäischen‘ EU-Mitgliedsländern repräsentiert? Über den Überblick über die Museen und ihre Entstehungsgeschichte hinausgehend wurde untersucht, wie ‚doppelte‘ bzw. ‚dreifache‘ Okkupation und der Holocaust, Opfernarrative und Kollaboration in den ständigen Ausstellungen verhandelt werden und welche Auswirkungen die EU-Beitrittsbemühungen und autoritäre Tendenzen auf dieses Aushandeln hatten und haben.

Nicht nur, aber auch anlässlich von Corona denkt Ro-land Reichenbach über die Chancen und die Überschätzung der Digitalisierung im Bildungsbereich nach. Kris Decker, der erste Merkur-Preis-Träger, hat über das Klima promoviert, allerdings aus his-torisch-ethnografischer Sicht, und fragt sich nicht zuletzt, welche Form von Wissen in diesem Be-reich produziert wird. In ihrer Literaturkolumne schreibt Eva Geulen über einen neuerdings diskutierten politisierten Blick auf das Tun der Literaturwissenschaft. Andreas Eckert informiert in seiner Geschichtskolumne über das Wirken der 1919 gegründeten International Labour Organization (ILO). Samir Sellami porträ-tiert den theorie- und experimentierfreudigen Autor Fred Moten. Stefanie Gänger und Jürgen Osterhammel sehen in der Corona-Krise einen willkommenen Anlass, noch einmal neu über den Sinn und mögliche Grenzen der Globalgeschichte nachzudenken. Markus Linden nimmt den Übergangsbereich von Konservatismus und Neuer Rechter und dabei vor allem wichtige Scharnier-Autoren und -Institutionen in den Blick. Corey Robin kritisiert die auch und gerade angesichts der Corona-Krise fatale Fixierung auf die Elite-Institutionen unter den US-Universitäten. Und Robin Detje zeigt sich getroffen vom unsolidarischen Verhaltens so vieler in der Corona-Krise.

    A TIMES HISTORY BOOK OF THE YEAR From the preeminent historian of 20th century Spain Paul Preston, Architects of Terror is a new history of how paranoia, conspiracy and anti-Semitism was used to justify the military coup of 1936 and enabled the construction of a dictatorship built on violence and persecution. It is the previously untold story of how antisemitic beliefs were weaponised to justify and propagate the Franco overthrow of liberal Spain. The Spanish military coup of 1936 was launched to overturn the social and economic reforms of the democratic Second Republic, and its educational and cultural challenges to the established order. The consequent civil war was fought in the interests of the landowners, industrialists, bankers, clerics and army officers whose privileges were threatened. However, a central justification for a war that took the lives of around 500,000 Spaniards was that it was being fought to combat an alleged scheme for world domination by a non-existent Jewish- Masonic-Bolshevik Conspiracy . Despite the fact that Spain had only a tiny minority of Jews and Freemasons, Franco and his inner circle were ardent believers in this fabricated conspiracy and spread the notion that the survival of Catholic Spain, as well, of course, of the establishment s economic interests, required the total annihilation of Jews and Freemasons. Architects of Terror is the story of how fake news, mendacity, corruption and nostalgia for lost empire generated violence and hatred. Es wird deutlich: Ziel dieses Narrativs ist nicht die Rettung eines - selbst in den Augen der Neurechten rein illusionären - deutschen Volkes, sondern die Zementierung von Grenzen und Verachtung.

    Rassismus ist politisch und das Politische ist geprägt von Rassismus. In vielen Teilen der deutschen Gesellschaft stehen sich Befürworter*innen der Homogenität und Vielfaltsbegeisterte unversöhnlich gegenüber. Lorenz Narku Laing analysiert die posthomogene Gesellschaft und zeigt, dass rassistische Politiken zum Kerngeschäft der Verfechter*innen der Homogenität gehören. Seine postkoloniale Kritik untersucht die tieferliegenden Gründe hierfür und liefert zugleich eine kritische Intervention in die (politik-)wissenschaftliche Forschung. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Rassismus weit mehr ist als Diskriminierung und Benachteiligung: Rassismus ist eine politische Ideologie.
