    Oft ist vom ,Artusmythos' die Rede, wobei ,Mythos' alltagssprachlich letztlich alles Altertümliche, Bedeutungs- oder Geheimnisvolle bezeichnen kann. Dem steht eine aktuelle geisteswissenschaftliche Diskussion über den Begriff des ,Mythos' gegenüber. Die Germanistik übernimmt hierbei meist eine Vorreiterrolle. Der vorliegende Band öffnet die Diskussion programmatisch für den interdisziplinären Dialog mit den anderen Philologien. Fokussiert auf das Feld der Artusliteratur, fragt der Band danach, welches Verständnis von ,Mythos' welchen Phänomenen im arthurischen Roman angemessen ist. Inhaltlich wird der Begriff mit vorchristlichen Glaubens- und Weltmodellen verbunden; die Beiträge analysieren die Nachwirkung des mythischen Substrats in der Artusdichtung. Strukturell und formal wird der ,Mythos' als eine a-kausale, zeitlose Erzählform verstanden, als eine Alternative zur Historiographie; zuweilen nähert er sich dem Fiktionalen, Magischen oder Symbolischen an. Deutlich wird, wie die einzelnen Romane je anders mit dem Mythischen umgehen, es destruieren, funktionalisieren oder restituieren. Der Band zeigt damit nachdrücklich, dass es einen literaturwissenschaftlichen Begriff des ,Mythos' jenseits der Einzeltexte nicht geben kann

    The renowned and illustrious tales of King Arthur, his knights and the Round Table pervade all European vernaculars, as well as the Latin tradition. Arthurian narrative material, which had originally been transmitted in oral culture, began to be inscribed regularly in the twelfth century, developing from (pseudo-)historical beginnings in the Latin chronicles of "historians" such as Geoffrey of Monmouth into masterful literary works like the romances of Chrétien de Troyes. Evidently a big hit, Arthur found himself being swiftly translated, adapted and integrated into the literary traditions of almost every European vernacular during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This Handbook seeks to showcase the European character of Arthurian romance both past and present.By working across national philological boundaries, which in the past have tended to segregate the study of Arthurian romance according to language, as well as by exploring primary texts from different vernaculars and the Latin tradition in conjunction with recent theoretical concepts and approaches, this Handbook brings together a pioneering and more complete view of the specifically European context of Arthurian romance, and promotes the more connected study of Arthurian literature across the entirety of its European context

    Die Frage nach einem mittelalterlichen Gattungsbewusstsein und den Wechselwirkungen literarischer Gattungen, auch als Sonderfall der Intertextualität, hat die mediävistische Forschung immer wieder beschäftigt. Anders als etwa die späte Heldenepik stand der Artusroman, der gerne als Prototyp einer geschlossenen literarischen Gattung betrachtet wird, dabei bisher nicht im Zentrum des Interesses. Hier setzt der vorliegende Band an. Die Beiträge (ausgewählte Ergebnisse des Internationalen Artuskongresses in Bukarest 2014) zeigen in detaillierten Fallstudien und textnahen Analysen, dass der Artusroman von Anfang an mit anderen Gattungen in einem Dialog stand und mit diesen Elemente und Strukturen austauschte. Gefragt wird nach den autorintendierten oder im Rezeptionsprozess entstehenden Effekten solcher wechselseitiger Einflussnahmen, die nicht zuletzt von der literarischen Kompetenz des Rezipienten abhängen. Der Band bietet einen Überblick über die Vielfalt solcher 'arthurischen Gattungsinterferenzen', leistet dadurch einen Beitrag zur Verortung der Artusliteratur im Spektrum der verschiedenen mittelalterlichen Gattungen und lässt Rückschlüsse auf das mittelalterliche Gattungsverständnis zu

    The renowned and illustrious tales of King Arthur, his knights and the Round Table pervade all European vernaculars, as well as the Latin tradition. Arthurian narrative material, which had originally been transmitted in oral culture, began to be inscribed regularly in the twelfth century, developing from (pseudo-)historical beginnings in the Latin chronicles of "historians" such as Geoffrey of Monmouth into masterful literary works like the romances of Chrétien de Troyes. Evidently a big hit, Arthur found himself being swiftly translated, adapted and integrated into the literary traditions of almost every European vernacular during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This Handbook seeks to showcase the European character of Arthurian romance both past and present.By working across national philological boundaries, which in the past have tended to segregate the study of Arthurian romance according to language, as well as by exploring primary texts from different vernaculars and the Latin tradition in conjunction with recent theoretical concepts and approaches, this Handbook brings together a pioneering and more complete view of the specifically European context of Arthurian romance, and promotes the more connected study of Arthurian literature across the entirety of its European context

Hier setzt der vorliegende Band an. Die Beiträge (ausgewählte Ergebnisse des Internationalen Artuskongresses in Bukarest 2014) zeigen in detaillierten Fallstudien und textnahen Analysen, dass der Artusroman von Anfang an mit anderen Gattungen in einem Dialog stand und mit diesen Elemente und Strukturen austauschte. Gefragt wird nach den autorintendierten oder im Rezeptionsprozess entstehenden Effekten solcher wechselseitiger Einflussnahmen, die nicht zuletzt von der literarischen Kompetenz des Rezipienten abhängen.     Oft ist vom ,Artusmythos' die Rede, wobei ,Mythos' alltagssprachlich letztlich alles Altertümliche, Bedeutungs- oder Geheimnisvolle bezeichnen kann. Dem steht eine aktuelle geisteswissenschaftliche Diskussion über den Begriff des ,Mythos' gegenüber. Die Germanistik übernimmt hierbei meist eine Vorreiterrolle. Der vorliegende Band öffnet die Diskussion programmatisch für den interdisziplinären Dialog mit den anderen Philologien. Fokussiert auf das Feld der Artusliteratur, fragt der Band danach, welches Verständnis von ,Mythos' welchen Phänomenen im arthurischen Roman angemessen ist. Inhaltlich wird der Begriff mit vorchristlichen Glaubens- und Weltmodellen verbunden; die Beiträge analysieren die Nachwirkung des mythischen Substrats in der Artusdichtung. Strukturell und formal wird der ,Mythos' als eine a-kausale, zeitlose Erzählform verstanden, als eine Alternative zur Historiographie; zuweilen nähert er sich dem Fiktionalen, Magischen oder Symbolischen an. Deutlich wird, wie die einzelnen Romane je anders mit dem Mythischen umgehen, es destruieren, funktionalisieren oder restituieren. Der Band zeigt damit nachdrücklich, dass es einen literaturwissenschaftlichen Begriff des ,Mythos' jenseits der Einzeltexte nicht geben kann
