    Abstract ; Die Dissertation untersucht Uwe Kolbes Frühwerk und dessen zeitgenössische Rezeption in der DDR und der BRD sowie sein (semi)öffentliches Handeln und Wirken während der Vorwendezeit,d.h. eines spezifischen, von Transformationsprozessen geprägten Zeitraums. Dieser reicht von Kolbes erster Zeitschriftenpublikation 1976 bis zu seiner Übersiedlung in die BRD 1987. Kolbes literarische Produktion in der bezeichneten Zeitspanne und die damit zusammenhängenden sozialen Faktoren seiner Autorenbiographie – politische Privilegien, ökonomische Möglichkeiten und soziale Beziehungen als Voraussetzungen für sein Schreiben und seine Veröffentlichungen sowie sein (semi)öffentliches Handeln und Wirken – und seine Rezeption in von spezifischen Machtverhältnissen geprägten literarischen Aktionsräumen werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit als ein zusammengehöriges Ganzes untersucht und punktuell auf ihren Aussagewert für Situationen und Entwicklungen in den literarischen Feldern der Vorwendezeit befragt. Die Arbeit fokussiert mit Hineingeboren auf den Eintritt Uwe Kolbes in das literarische Feld unter der Mentorschaft Franz Fühmanns, seine davon ausgehende Rezeption als generationsspezifischer Repräsentant der jungen DDR-Autorengeneration und die damit verbundenen Wahrnehmungs- und Bewertungsmuster in den literarischen Feldern DDR und BRD. Des Weiteren untersucht sie Kolbes Rolle in der inoffiziellen Szene am Prenzlauer Berg. Sie analysiert seine zeichentheoretisch fundierte Sprach- und Machtkritik in Abschiede und seine politische Poetologie in Bornholm II und Das Kabarett. Darüber hinaus arbeitet sie Kolbes Rolle des widerspenstigen und politisch kritischen Vorzeigeautors heraus, infolge derer er in der BRD als außenpolitisches Aushängeschild einer vermeintlich toleranten DDR-Kulturpolitik fungierte. Sie erforscht schließlich seine Rezeption in der BRD u.a. durch seine Position in verschiedenen Anthologien junger DDR-Literatur und analysiert seine Integration in den bundesdeutschen Kanon. ; Abstract ; This dissertation examines Uwe Kolbe’s early work and its reception in East and West Germany as well as his (semi-)public activities and their impact in the pre-Wende era, i.e. over a distinct time frame characterised by transformation processes. It spans the period from Kolbe’s first publication in a literary journal in 1976 to his relocation to West Germany in 1987. The present study views Kolbe’s literary production, the associated social factors of his literary career – political privileges, economic opportunities and social relationships as prerequisites for his writing and publications as well as his (semi-) public activities and their impact – and his reception as inextricably linked, and, by way of selected examples, shows their significance for situations and developments in the literary fields of the pre-Wende era. In the case of the poetry volume Hineingeboren, the study focuses on Kolbe’s entry into the literary field with the support of his mentor Franz Fühmann, his subsequent reception as a representative of the young generation of GDR authors, and the patterns of perception and evaluation associated with that in the literary fields of the GDR and West Germany. Kolbe’s role in the unofficial literary scene in Prenzlauer Berg is also investigated. The study analyses his semiotic critique of language and power in Abschiede and his political poetics as revealed in Bornholm II and Das Kabarett. In addition, it explores Kolbe’s role as a recalcitrant and politically critical author who became the poster boy of a supposedly tolerant East German cultural policy in West Germany. Finally, it examines Kolbe’s reception in West Germany, among other things through publications in various anthologies of contemporary GDR literature, and analyses how his work has been integrated into the German literary canon since Reunification.

    Recent years have witnessed a revival of interest in the influence of archaic lyric poetry on Hellenistic poets. However, no study has yet examined the reception of Pindar, the most prominent of the lyric poets, in the poetry of this period. This monograph is the first book to offer a systematic examination of the evidence for the reception of Pindar in the works of Callimachus of Cyrene, Theocritus of Syracuse, Apollonius of Rhodes and Posidippus of Pella. Through a series of case studies, it argues that Pindaric poetry exercised a considerable influence on a variety of Hellenistic genres: epinician elegies and epigrams, hymns, encomia, and epic poetry. For the poets active at the courts of the first three Ptolemies, Pindar's poetry represented praise discourse in its most successful configuration. Imitating aspects of it, they lent their support to the ideological apparatus of Greco-Egyptian kingship, shaped the literary profile of Pindar for future generations of readers, and defined their own role and place in Greek literary history. The discussion offered in this book suggests new insights into aspects of literary tradition, Ptolemaic patronage, and Hellenistic poetics, placing Pindar's work at the very heart of an intricate nexus of political and poetic correspondences

    Six hundred years after Poggio’s retrieval of the De rerum natura, and with the recent surge of interest in Lucretius and his influence, there has never been a better time to fully assess and recognize the shaping force of his thought and poetry over European culture from antiquity to modern times. This volume offers a multidisciplinary and updated overview of Lucretius as philosopher and as poet, with special attention to how these two aspects interact. The volume includes 18 contributions by established as well as early career scholars working on Lucretius’ philosophical and poetic work, and his reception both in ancient and early modern times. All the chapters present new and original research. Section I explores core issues of Epicurean-Lucretian epistemology and ethics. Section II expounds much new material on ancient response to and reception of Lucretius. Section III presents new material and analysis on the immediate, fraught early modern reception of the poem. Section IV offers a wide collection of new and original papers on Lucretius’ fortunes in the period from Machiavelli up to Victorian times.     Apuleius' tale of Cupid and Psyche has been popular since it was first written in the second century CE as part of his Latin novel Metamorphoses. Often treated as a standalone text, Cupid and Psyche has given rise to treatments in the last 400 years as diverse as plays, masques, operas, poems, paintings and novels, with a range of diverse approaches to the text.Apuleius' story of the love between the mortal princess Psyche (or "Soul") and the god of Love has fascinated recipients as varied as Romantic poets, psychoanalysts, children's books authors, neo-Platonist philosophers and Disney film producers. Jahrhundert und mit der Literaturtheorie von Stefan Zweig. The sixteen essays in this Festschrift, presented to Eckart Schütrumpf by his friends and colleagues, pay tribute to his influential work. The variety of topics – as well as the linguistic diversity (English, German, and Italian) – reflects the wide scope of Schütrumpf’s research interests. Philosophical contributions consider definitions of justice, the theoretical life, good governance, the proper care for others, and the nature of the Platonic Socrates. Other contributions investigate the tradition of Platonic and Aristotelian thought in Plutarch and Horace. Historical essays consider Thucydides’ relationship to Herodotus, the reception of tales of apotheosis in early Christian narratives, and the processes through which Olympia developed into a sacred space of Panhellenic significance. The collection concludes with more modern considerations: the idealization of Arcadia in the painting of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri and Nicolas Poussin, the appropriation of Spartan themes in the German sloganeering of the 19th to the 21st century, and Stephan Zweig’s conviction that historiography and literature can facilitate worldwide community.

Die historische, diskursive und politische Situierung kanonischer Dramen zeigt, dass das »dramatische Theater« selbst Teil kultureller und theatraler Praxis ist. Die Dramen von Lessing und Kleist operieren mit einem breiten Spektrum theatraler Techniken (etwa Teichoskopie, Ekphrasis, Maskerade und Mise en abyme), die die imaginative Teilhabe des Publikums zu fördern, formen und lenken suchen. Neben der Darstellung von Einbildung auf der Handlungsebene reflektieren die Dramen den eigenen medialen Status, indem sie Folgen und Reformierung »falscher« Einbildung in Szene setzen. The study examines an aspect of German theatre history that is relevant also in the context of the current engagement with theatrical phenomenology and reception. The historical, discursive, and political situating of canonical dramas shows that "dramatic theater" itself is to be regarded as part of cultural and theatrical practice. The dramas of Lessing and Kleist operate with a broad spectrum of theatrical techniques (such as teichoscopy, ekphrasis, masquerade and mise en abyme) that seek to promote, shape and direct the imaginative participation of their implied audiences. In addition to presenting imagination on the plot level, the dramas reflect their own medial status by staging the consequences and the reformation of "false" imaginative investments.

These essays discuss the artistic creation of Odysseus’s travels and the reception of Homer’s two epics in both ancient and modern times, fundamental questions on Greek tragedy, such as catharsis, character and characterisation or its sociopolitical significance, and various aspects of satyr plays, such as the mythical subject matter of this genre, which has unfortunately almost been completely lost, or the composition of the chorus of satyrs and the form and significance of its dances.

    The fall of Nero and the civil wars of 69 CE ushered in an era scarred by the recent conflicts; Flavian literature also inherited a rich tradition of narrating nefas from its predecessors who had confronted and commemorated the traumas of Pharsalus and Actium. Despite the present surge of scholarly interest in both Flavian literary studies and Roman civil war literature, however, the Flavian contribution to Rome's literature of bellum ciuile remains understudied. This volume shines a spotlight on these neglected voices. In the wake of 69 CE, writing civil war became an inescapable project for Flavian Rome: from Statius's fraternas acies and Silius's suicidal Saguntines to the internecine narratives detailed in Josephus's Bellum Iudaicum and woven into Frontinus's exempla, Flavian authors' preoccupation with civil war transcends genre and subject matter. This book provides an important new chapter in the study of Roman civil war literature by investigating the multi-faceted Flavian response to this persistent and prominent theme

    The research project Beatrijs Internationaal brought together about a hundred literary translators and researchers in the field of historical and modern Dutch literature, translation studies and related disciplines, from twenty different language areas. The participants immersed themselves in questions about the international circulation and reception of the famous Middle Dutch legend of Our Lady, from its origins to our own time. Almost a hundred adaptations and translations of the Beatrijs-story were found, and new discoveries are still being made. The case of Beatrijs brought about new theoretical discussions, cooperation and exchange in the field of Dutch Studies, as is demonstrated by this volume. By means of diverse approaches the authors show how a literary text from the relatively small geographical area of the Dutch language can circulate both inside and outside its linguistic borders in different periods. With their wide spectrum of research questions, methodological approaches and selections of material, the contributions are a reflection of the richness of international Dutch Studies in the 21st century. Inspired by translation, adaptation and reception studies, this volume helps us to answer the question which characteristics of a particular text make it a likely candidate for crossing linguistic, geophysical, historical, and other borders.     Die mit Absicht unpathetische Fragestellung dieses Bandes deutet auf eine doppelte Zielsetzung: Zum einen steht natürlich Nietzsches Buch im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit, das als ein „Buch für Alle und Keinen“ selbst in seiner Gattungsbestimmung schwierig geblieben ist; Lesarten und Interpretationen aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen der Kulturgeschichte widmen sich seiner Vermessung. Zum andern wird Nietzsches Buch in einen es übergreifenden Zusammenhang gestellt, der diese wohl berühmteste Station der Auseinandersetzung mit dem großen persischen Vorbild in den Dialog der Interpretationsgeschichte einordnet.Orientalistik und Philosophie, Literatur-, Kunst und Politikwissenschaft unternehmen dazu gemeinsame Anstrengungen. Kulturhistorische, hermeneutisch-rezeptionsgeschichtliche und imagologische Fragestellungen richten sich auf die Relevanz der Bildprozesse von Urbild, Vorbild und Abbild im Austausch zwischen den jeweiligen Disziplinen. Um einen weiteren Beitrag ergänzt, ist dieser Titel nun in der zweiten Auflage wieder erhältlich.

    Wie antwortet der Roman, die Leitgattung der modernen Literatur, auf die Krisen politischer Ordnungen und ökonomischer Systeme zwischen Französischer Revolution und Erstem Weltkrieg? Gegenstand der Interpretation sind französische und englische Romane zwischen dem Realismus und der Moderne. Die Fragestellung zielt auf die fiktionale Verarbeitung des kritischen Verhältnisses ethischer Orientierungen, politischer Instabilität und ökonomischer Transformation vor dem Hintergrund der neuen Formen gesellschaftlicher Differenzierung. Die vier ausgewählten Autoren (Honoré de Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, Joseph Conrad, Henry James) reagieren auf spezifische epochale Problemlagen. Sie stehen über die Grenzen der jeweiligen nationalliterarischen Traditionen hinaus in intensiven Wirkungs- und Rezeptionsverhältnissen, in denen sich die dynamische Evolution der Gattung Roman abbildet.

    The fall of Nero and the civil wars of 69 CE ushered in an era scarred by the recent conflicts; Flavian literature also inherited a rich tradition of narrating nefas from its predecessors who had confronted and commemorated the traumas of Pharsalus and Actium. Despite the present surge of scholarly interest in both Flavian literary studies and Roman civil war literature, however, the Flavian contribution to Rome's literature of bellum ciuile remains understudied. This volume shines a spotlight on these neglected voices. In the wake of 69 CE, writing civil war became an inescapable project for Flavian Rome: from Statius's fraternas acies and Silius's suicidal Saguntines to the internecine narratives detailed in Josephus's Bellum Iudaicum and woven into Frontinus's exempla, Flavian authors' preoccupation with civil war transcends genre and subject matter. This book provides an important new chapter in the study of Roman civil war literature by investigating the multi-faceted Flavian response to this persistent and prominent theme

Bis heute hat die Faszination ihrer zertrümmerten homoerotischen Verse über Sehnsucht, Schönheit und Abschied nicht nachgelassen – im Gegenteil: Sappho ist in der deutschsprachigen Lyrik des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts präsenter als je zuvor. In exemplarischen Einzelanalysen wird das fruchtbare Zusammenspiel von archaischer und moderner Lyrik sichtbar gemacht und das Phänomen der zeitlosen Modernität von Sapphos Dichtung aus literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive erklärt. Sappho from Lesbos, born in the seventh century BC, was the first canonical female voice in Europe. From antiquity on she was appreciated in art/ artistically received, even if – or perhaps precisely because – her biography lies in the dark and most of her poetry is lost. To this day, the fascination that emanates from the enigmatic poetess and her shattered homoerotic verses about longing, beauty and farewell has not diminished – on the contrary: This book/volume demonstrates that in the German-language poetry of the 20th and 21st centuries Sappho is more present than ever before. Single exemplary analyses that stick close to the text show the fruitful interplay between archaic and modern poetry. At the same time, the timeless modernity of Sappho’s poetry is explained from a literary perspective.
