    Abstract ; Zwei Aufgaben sind es, denen sich die vorliegende Dissertation stellt: Sie will die Rolle des Kulturtragenden bei der Etablierung der Öffentlichkeit einer pluralistischen, parlamentarisch-demokratisch verfassten Gesellschaft erörtern und dabei den zahlreichen Bemühungen um eine ideenhistorische Einordnung eines der sensibelsten Kapitel der deutschen Geschichte auf der Grundlage eines bislang nicht systematisch erschlossenen Quellenmaterials einen eigenständigen Akzent verleihen. Den epochalen Bezugsrahmen der Arbeit stellen die Jahre der Weimarer Republik dar. Ihre Quellenbasis erschließt sie sich mit einer umfangreichen Sammlung von Reaktionen auf die von führenden Tageszeitungen und Zeitschriften unter den Repräsentanten des Weimarer Kulturlebens durchgeführten Rundfragen zu einer vielfarbigen Palette aktualitätsgeschichtlicher, produktions- und rezeptionsästhetischer, gesellschafts- und kulturpolitischer Themen. Die Methode schließlich, derer sie sich bei der Auswertung dieses Materials bedient, ist die einer interdisziplinären, vor allem sozialgeschichtlich und ideologiekritisch orientierten Literaturwissenschaft. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Arbeit ist ihre Quellenbasis: die Rundfragensammlung. Ein Namensverzeichnis ihrer Autoren würde sich lesen wie ein "Who is who?" der Weimarer Republik. Zu den Teilnehmern gehörte der schon damals kanonisierte Heinrich Mann genauso wie der junge Bertolt Brecht oder der heute fast völlig vergessene Hans José Rehfisch. Zu Wort gemeldet haben sich Vertreter beinah aller Sparten der Theater- und Opernwelt von Leopold Jessner über Tilla Durieux bis hin zu Leo Blech, aber auch Theologen wie Paul Tillich oder Politiker wie Konrad Adenauer, damaliger Oberbürgermeister von Köln. Mit vorliegender Arbeit wird dieses pressepublizistische Material erstmals aspektorientiert ausgewertet. ; Abstract ; This thesis takes an exciting new look at a nearly forgotten body of texts written during the Weimar Republic, the so called "Rundfragen". It has two main objectives: The first is to describe the importance of intellectuals, of writers, artists, actors and academics, for the development of the structure of a pluralistic, parliamentary-democratic society, the second is to interpret one of the most important chapters of German history on the basis of the “Rundfragen”, a textual basis which never has been analyzed systematically. The historical period the thesis pays attention to is the Weimar Republic. The “Rundfrage” is a special genre of text from newspapers and journals, in which those who represented Weimar Germany''s cultural life were asked to discuss political, aesthetic, social and cultural problems of common interest. The thesis analyzes its textual basis using a multidisciplinary method combining literature and social history. The speciality of the thesis is without doubt its source material. A collection of the names of those who replied to a "Rundfrage" sounds like a "Who is who?" of the Weimar Republic. Among the authors are the famous novelist Heinrich Mann and the young Bert Brecht who earned his reputation as an innovative playwriter during the twenties. Also asked for articles were representatives of theatre''s and opera''s world, including the producer Leopold Jessner, the actress Tilly Durieux or the composer Leo Blech, also involved were the theologian Paul Tillich or Konrad Adenauer, at the time Lord Mayor of Cologne. The thesis is the first attempt to analyze the textual material of the "Rundfragen".

    Walter Benjamin hat sein Denken und Schreiben verschiedentlich als Ausdruck von extremen Konstellationen gedeutet. Doch welche konkreten Schreibverfahren resultieren daraus? Die Studie untersucht diese Frage anhand einer einflussreichen intellektuellen Begegnung, die in der Benjamin-Forschung bisher kaum berücksichtigt wurde: Benjamins Rezeption von Salomo Friedlaenders ,Schöpferische Indifferenz'. Entlang einer vergleichenden Untersuchung wird gezeigt, wie beide Autoren die Denkfigur der ,Polarität' als zeitdiagnostisches Erkenntnismedium nutzen, um die Krisen, Spannungen und Extreme der Zeit auf ihren Begriff zu bringen. Mit den Untersuchungen von konkreten Einflüssen und intertextuellen Verweisen erschließt die Arbeit einen Knotenpunkt der kleinteiligen intellektuellen Debatten, in denen Benjamins Schriften verortet sind und leistet zugleich einen Beitrag zur Wiederentdeckung des Philosophen und Schriftstellers Salomo Friedlaender

    This study traces how an internationalist world literature of the labor movement was represented and put into practice in the Weimar Republic. It contributes to a theory of world literature, reinforces the intersectional category of class for analyzing representations of a split modernity, and opens up new perspectives on the literature of the working class for poetology, literary history, and cultural history Von der international boomenden Forschung zu Weltliteratur bisher weitestgehend unbeachtet entstand zur Zeit der Weimarer Republik eine internationalistische Weltliteratur der Arbeiterbewegung. Diese stellt den historisch ersten Versuch dar, eine Weltliteratur als Teil einer politischen Massenbewegung zu erzeugen. Auf der Basis der Analyse von u.a. Zeitschriften, Buchgemeinschaften und Autoren wie Franz Jung, Anna Seghers und Egon Erwin Kisch zeichnet die Studie literatur-, kultur- und mediengeschichtliche Aspekte der Vorstellungen, Theorien und Praktiken dieser Form der Weltliteratur nach. Insbesondere beschäftigt sie sich mit transnationalen literarischen Gegenöffentlichkeiten sowie mit einem literarischen Wissen vom globalen Proletariat und alternativen Vorstellungen von Globalisierung, die in den untersuchten Texten erzeugt werden. Die Studie leistet einen Beitrag zur Theorie der Weltliteratur, stärkt die intersektionale Kategorie der Klasse für Analysen von Repräsentationen einer geteilten Moderne und eröffnet neue poetologische, literatur- und kulturgeschichtliche Perspektiven auf die Literatur der Arbeiterbewegung

    Max Picards frühe Schriften zeichnen sich durch eigenwillige literarische und kulturphilosophische Positionen aus. Karsten Lichau lotet die Spannungen und Brüche in Picards oft vorschnell als kulturpessimistisch oder konservativ etikettiertem Frühwerk aus, das zwischen 1914 und 1933 entstand. Im Zentrum steht dabei eine ebenso umkämpfte wie schillernde literarische Figur: das Gesicht. Indem die Studie textnahe Lektüre mit kulturhistorischer Kontextualisierung verbindet, geht sie den Um- und Abwegen der schriftstellerischen Laufbahn Picards nach und eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf seinen weitgehend in Vergessenheit geratenen Beitrag zum literarischen Feld der Weimarer Zeit. Zugleich zeigt die Untersuchung, dass Picards Texte die fiktiven oder prophetischen "Gesichte" reflektieren, die in außerliterarischen Feldern zirkulieren - von Kunst- und Medientheorie über Geschichtsphilosophie sowie jüdische und christliche Theologie bis hin zur ästhetischen Medizin und Rassenhygiene. Oft werden die Leerstellen der Romane mit biographischen Details gefüllt, aber auch Darstellungen des Lebens durch Handlungselemente der Romane ergänzt. Solche Lektüren lassen sich als Effekte erzählerischer Strategien beschreiben, die sich nicht auf die fiktionalen Texte beschränken. Die Verfahren folgen bestimmten Mustern, deren Variation einen engen Zeitbezug aufweist. Muster und Variation finden sich in allen Genres: im Roman, in der Lyrik, aber auch in Briefen Keuns, in ihren Radio- und Fernsehinterviews. Die Studie schlägt ein Lektüremodell vor, das fiktionale und nichtfiktionale Elemente ausweist, ästhetische Textkonstruktion wahrnehmbar macht und gleichzeitig die Kategorie Autor reflektiert. Erstmals wird die gesamte Keun-Forschung systematisiert, der Werkbestand klassifiziert und zuvor unerschlossenes Material präsentiert

In the following decade she became the most influential American woman next to Eleanor Roosevelt. Thompson's extensive network of friends and collaborators included prominent personalities on both sides of the Atlantic: Hamilton Fish Armstrong, Lion Feuchtwanger, Marcel Fodor, Ben Huebsch, Annette Kolb, Fritz Kortner, Thomas Mann, H. L. Mencken, Helmuth James von Moltke, Eugenie Schwarzwald, Christa Winsloe, and Carl Zuckmayer. Her prolific public engagement against Hitler and on behalf of refugees and exiled writers was based on the conviction that one was not possible without the other. A fierce opponent of isolationism, she declared that indifference towards totalitarianism or the refugee crisis would destroy democracy not only abroad but also in the United States

    Das Ende des deutschen Kolonialreichs mobilisierte in der Weimarer Republik und der ehemaligen Kolonie Südwestafrika mehrheitlich revisionistische Aktivitäten. Welche Rolle nahm dabei die junge Generation ein? Koloniale Jugendgruppen widersetzten sich Instrumentalisierungsversuchen durch Erwachsene, indem sie unter Bezugnahme auf die bündische Jugend eigene nationalistische Visionen und Handlungsorientierungen entwickelten. Gleichzeitig nutzten deutsche Siedlernachkommen ihre Bildungsaufenthalte in Deutschland eher für individuelle Ziele, statt sich der Kolonialrevision zu verpflichten.Aus akteurszentrierter Perspektive zeichnet Susanne Heyn ein beziehungsgeschichtliches Bild dieser ersten postkolonialen Phase. Sie reflektiert die Grenzen des Weimarer Kolonialrevisionismus und arbeitet die disparaten Zukunftsvorstellungen von Jung und Alt sowie von Kolonialbewegung und deutschen Siedlerfamilien heraus.
