"Argument was the basis of Renaissance education; both rhetoric and dialectic permeated early modern humanist culture, including drama. This study approaches Shakespeare's English history plays, the Roman plays and Troilus and Cressida by analyzing the use of argument in the plays, by exploring the disjunction between verbal argument and the argument of action, and by exploring the wider importance of argument in Renaissance culture. Knowles shows how analysis of arguments of speech and action takes us to the core of the plays, in which Shakespeare interrogates the nature of political morality and truth as grounded in the history of what men do and say."--BOOK JACKET.

Greek myth-makers crafted the downfall of Troy and its rulers into an archetypal illustration of ruthless conquest, deceit, crime and punishment, and the variability of human fortunes. This book examines the major episodes in this archetypal myth - the murder of Priam, the rape of Kassandra, the reunion of Helen and Menelaos, and the escape of Aineias - as witnessed in Archaic Greek epic, fifth-century Athenian drama, and Athenian black- and red-figure vase-painting. It focuses in particular on the narrative artistry with which poets and painters balanced these episodes with one another and intertwined them with other chapters in the story of Troy. The author offers the first comprehensive demonstration of the narrative centrality of the Ilioupersis myth within the corpus of Trojan epic poetry, and the first systematic study of pictorial juxtapositions of Ilioupersis scenes on painted vases.

Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde invites philosophical speculation because of its Boethian and nominalist elements. This study comprehensively reviews Ockhamism and its possible influence on Chaucer in his version of the Troy story A close analysis of the anachronistic characterizations of Troilus, Criseyde, and Pandarus and of the images, words and discourse of the poem leads to the conclusion that Chaucer was a traditional scholastic thinker, thereby making the poem an artistic negative response to the skeptical philosophy of his time
