How can discourses about politically motivated violence be analyzed? Christer Petersen presents a perspective on the investigation of the connection between political terror and the propaganda of its mass media distribution. He develops a formal discourse analysis which enables the precise description of Media Studies objects by means of an applied logic. Methodologically, the first decisive steps are made - within the framework of a self-reflexive application of formal logic for the analysis of discourses of violence - toward a new Media Studies discipline, and the prolegomena for an Analytical Media Studies is laid out Wie lassen sich Diskurse über politisch motivierte Gewalt analysieren?

Snow blankets the avenues of Manhattan's exclusive Upper West Side. The storm is the perfect cover for a fashionable, highly trained team of lethal assassins as they prowl the streets, hunting their prey. But their first hit is simply target practice. Their next mission may very well turn the Cold War red-hot once again. Stepping directly into the line of fire, the president of the United States is in New York for a summit at the United Nations with his Russian counterpart. Pulled away from his family and pressed into service, Detective Michael Bennett must trace the source of a threat that could rip the country apart-- and ignite a war the likes of which the world has never seen. With allegiances constantly in doubt and no one above suspicion, only Bennett can save the president-- and the country-- before the assassins' deadly kill shot hits its mark

"Since 2001 America's War on Terror has achieved what Osama bin Laden could not: the unification of the jihad under al-Qa'ida's banner. Although today al-Qa'ida is seen as the epitome of jihad, when it first emerged other militant Islamists rejected its vision of a holy war against the West ... investigative journalist Camille Tawil charts the history of conflict and complicity between al-Qa'ida and its brothers in arms from the late 1980s to the present day. Drawing on a network of contacts in Egyptian Islamic Jihad, Algeria's Armed Islamic Group and the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, he shows how the failure of their separate national struggles brought them increasingly under the influence of Osama bin Laden and his global agenda. From prison cells in Morocco to the caves of Tora Bora, Tawil gives us unique access to the key players behind the jihadist movement and the evolution of its violent ideology"--P. "This work examines violence in the age of the terror wars with an eye toward the technologies of governance that create, facilitate, and circulate that violence. In performing a rhetorical cartography that explores the rise of the US armed drone program as well as moments of resistive violence that occurred during the Arab Spring directed at generating a counter-hegemony by Muslim populations, the author argues that the problem of the global terror wars is best addressed by a rhetorical understanding of the ways that governments, as well as individual subjects, turn to violence as a response to, or product of, the post September 11th terror society. When political examinations of terrorism are facilitated through understandings of discourse, Hayes argues, clearer maps emerge of how violence functions to offer mechanisms by which governing bodies, and their subjects, evaluate the success or failure of the "War on Terror." This book will be of interest to public policymakers and informed general readers as well as students and scholars in the fields of rhetoric, political theory, critical geography, US foreign relations/policy, war and peace studies, and cultural studies"--Page [4] of cover Introducing rhetoricoviolence -- The materiality of rhetoric and violence -- Rhetorical cartography: mapping the terror wars -- Violent subjects -- the buzzing of the drones -- Mapping the disposal of terrorist bodies -- Occupying Tahrir: resistance, violence, and political change -- The terror wars drone on..or don't they?

Anmerkungen, Literatur, Register. (2) (Harald Pilzer)

Beginning around 1559 and continuing through 1642, writers in England, Scotland, and France found themselves pre-occupied with an unusual sort of crime, a crime without a name which today we call 'terrorism'. These crimes were especially dangerous because they were aimed at violating not just the law but the fabric of law itself; and yet they were also, from an opposite point of view, especially hopeful, for they seemed to have the power of unmaking a systematic injustice and restoring a nation to its 'ancient liberty'. The Bible and the annals of classical history were full of examples: Ehud assassinating King Eglon of Moab; Samson bringing down the temple in Gaza; Catiline arousing a conspiracy of terror in republican Rome; Marcus Brutus leading a conspiracy against the life of Julius Caesar. More recent history provided examples too: legends about Mehmed II and his concubine Irene; the assassination in Florence of Duke Alessandro de 'Medici, by his cousin Lorenzino.0

"Unlike other studies which have focused mainly on the response to the 9/11 attacks in writing from the United States, Topologies of Fear in Contemporary Fiction is global and comparative in its approach. It emphasizes the depiction in twentieth-century fiction of the transnational character of terrorism and counterterrorism throughout the 20th century, rather than only the response to the 9/11 attacks. The book examines what critical tools are available from contemporary literary theory and critical legal studies to develop what the book calls 'anti-terror discourse critique.' This is an important text for scholars and students of literature, cultural studies, studies of media and visual culture, and critical legal philosophy"--
