Introduction, Susan Petrilli -- Part I: On the Transaltability of Emotions -- Alterity and the Translatability of Emotions as the Foundation of Self, Language and Living Together; Susan Petrilli and Augusto Ponzio -- Why Emotions Translate, but Feelings Do Not: Insights from Peirce; Winfried Nöth -- Feeling and Its Unfolding; Lucia Santaella -- Body, Emotion and Semiosis: Translating Emotion into Action; Jacques Fontanille -- Part II: Speaking Emotions Listening to the Body and to Others -- Emotions as Discourse; Alphonso Lingis -- On a Biology of Emotions and Its role in Cultural Evolution; Elize Bisanz -- Emotion, Culture, and the Nature of Truth: For a Dialogical Philosophy; Wayne Cristaudo -- Part III: Becoming Conscious of Emotions and Social Conditioning -- Self-Regard and Disregarded Selves: A Peircean Approach to Several Social Emotions; Vincent Colapietro -- Language, Pragmatics, and Emotions: The Case of Impoliteness; Frank Nuessel -- Saving-Face: The Nonverbal Communicology of Basic Emotions; Richard Lanigan -- Part IV: Expressing Emotions between Mass-medial and Rhetorical Figures -- Emotional Wellbeing and the Semiotic Translation of Emojis; Marcel Danesi -- Transmediality and Translation of Emotions; Peeter Torop -- The Translator’s Mobilization of Social Emotions: A Behavioral-Economic Approach to the Rhetoric of Translation; Douglas Robinson. This book offers an in-depth, cross-disciplinary discussion of the translatability of social emotions. Part I is a collection of essays by leading philosophers of semiotics in Europe and Latin America, exploring the translatability of social emotions as a culturally embedded social behavior that requires a fully contextualized historical interpretation of their origins in different social and cultural settings. These essays make useful preparations for the case studies introduced in Part II, authored by leading sociological and literary scholars, who explore the cultural influence of the development of social emotions. Finally, Part III delves into specific types of emotions which underscore social interactions at individual and personal levels, such as dignity, (im-)politeness, self-regard and self-esteem. The book will be of interest to scholars of translation studies and semiotics, as well as those interested in the study of emotions more broadly. Susan Petrilli is Professor of Semiotics at the University of Bari, Italy. Meng Ji is Associate Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia.

This leading team of scholars presents a fascinating book about change: shifting political, economic and cultural conditions; ephemeral, sometimes even seasonal, multilingualism; and altered imaginaries for minority and indigenous languages and their users. The authors refer to this network of interlinked changes as the new conditions surrounding small languages (Sámi, Corsican, Irish and Welsh) in peripheral sites. Starting from the conviction that peripheral sites can and should inform the sociolinguistics of globalisation, the book explores how new modes of reflexivity, more transactional frames for authenticity, commodification of peripheral resources, and boundary-transgression with humour, all carry forward change. These types of change articulate a blurring of binary oppositions between centre and periphery, old and new, and standard and non-standard. Such research is particularly urgent in multilingual small language contexts, where different conceptualisations of language(s), boundaries, and speakers impact on individuals' social, cultural, and economic capital, and opportunities.

Chapter 1. Introduction -- Chapter 2. Theoretical Framework -- Chapter 3. ‘Chav’ -- Chapter 4. The Chav -- Chapter 5. New Digital Media and the Chav -- Chapter 6. Pulling the Threads Together and Expanding on ‘Chav’ in Social Media -- Chapter 7. Concluding Remarks. “This marvelous book offers a fresh perspective on class formations in the 21st century. Originally a derogatory epithet for a British underclass, the term Chav was to become the moniker for a gradiently inhabitable social identity, performable and negotiable through the behaviors that make Chav personae identifiable, and eventually to undergo ever-changing forms of reanalysis and regrouping in the lives of British citizens. By carefully tracing these developments through the last two decades, this book shows that any attempt to reify class formations—by criteria of disposable income, and the like—fails utterly to account for the manner in which class identities are created and transformed through the discursive interactions in which they live.” —Asif Agha, University of Pennsylvania, USA The book sets out to examine the concept of 'chav', providing a review of its origins, its characterological figures, the process of enregisterment whereby it has come to be recognized in public discourse, and the traits associated with it in traditional media representations. The author then discusses the 'chav' label in light of recent re-appropriations in social network activity (particularly through the video-sharing app TikTok) and subsequent commentary in the public sphere. She traces the evolution of the term from its use during the first decade of the twenty-first century to make sense of class, status and cultural capital, to its resurgence and the ways in which it is still associated with appearance in gendered and classed ways. She then draws on recent developments in linguistic anthropology and embodied sociocultural linguistics to argue that social media users draw on communicative resources to perform identities that are both situated in specific contexts of discourse and dynamically changing, challenging the idea that geo-sociocultural varieties and mannerisms are the sole way of indexing membership of a community. This volume contends that equating 'chav' with 'underclass' in the most recent uses of the concept on social networks may not be the whole story, and the book will be of interest to sociocultural linguistics and identity researchers, as well as readers in anthropology, sociology, British studies, cultural studies, identity studies, digital humanities, and sociolinguistics. Emilia Di Martino is an associate professor at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, Italy. She is interested in a wide variety of topics, mostly focusing on the nexus between identity, language, and power. She has presented at many local and international conferences, and has published extensively, including the book Celebrity Accents and Public Identity Construction: Analyzing Geordie Stylizations (2019).

This book provides a critical overview of contemporary world issues in Language and Literary Studies. It offers specific ideas as to how to move away from the traditional literary canon, on the one hand, and traditional native-speaker norms in English language teaching, on the other. It delivers a global perspective of both the growth and the challenges in ELT studies around the world. Following the introduction, the first section of the book contains chapters from international scholars on recognizing and diversifying Englishes in today’s language and translation classrooms. Specifically, the chapters focus on issues such as the cultural hegemony of a monolithic English, English and university pedagogy, English as a gatekeeper, and the role of a reconceived English education in promoting cross-cultural understanding. The second section focuses on the interaction of literature and culture, with specific chapters focusing on decolonizing the traditional literary canon, defining a global text, representing cultural interactions in literary texts, and emerging genres in contemporary English literature. Both sections of the book question the existing boundaries in a post-2020 world, specifically in a non-western world. It is an indispensable resource for scholars in cultural studies, linguistics, and literary studies.

This edited book examines language perceptions and practices in multilingual university contexts in light of recent theoretical developments questioning the conceptualization of language as a static entity, drawing on case studies from different Northern European contexts in order to explore the effects of phenomena including internationalization, widening participation, and migration patterns on language attitudes and ideologies. The book provides cutting-edge perspectives on language uses in Northern European universities by drawing attention to the multiplicity of language practices alongside the prominence of English in international study programmes and research publication. It will be of interest to students and scholars of multilingualism, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and education, as well as language policymakers. Maria Kuteeva is Professor of English Linguistics in the Department of English at Stockholm University, Sweden. Kathrin Kaufhold is Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of English at Stockholm University, Sweden. Niina Hynninen is Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. .

Chapter 1: Jamaica to the World -- Chapter 2: Once Upon an Island -- Chapter 3: The Languages in Conflict -- Chapter 4: Through Children's Eyes- Where Nation, State, Race, Colour and Language Meet -- Chapter 5: Jamaica Here, Jamaica Everywhere. “Devonish and Carpenter lay out a compelling account of the formation and spread of Jamaican language and culture. Synthesising the latest scholarship on race with well-established principles of language change and diffusion, they present a satisfying answer to the question of how Jamaican Creole has achieved popularity everywhere but at home, and the consequences thereof. This work will be of interest for years to come to all scholars of Caribbean culture and society.”-- Jason F. Siegel, University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, Barbados This book examines the racial and socio-linguistic dynamics of Jamaica, a majority black nation where the dominant ideology continues to look to white countries as models, yet which continues to defy the odds. The authors trace the history of how a nation of less than three million people has come to be at the centre of cultural, racial and linguistic influence globally; producing a culture than has transformed the way that the world listens to music, and a dialect that has formed the lingua franca for a generation of young people. The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Caribbean linguistics, Africana studies, diaspora studies, sociology of language and sociolinguistics more broadly. Hubert Devonish is Professor Emeritus in the Jamaican Language Unit at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. He is the author of Language and Liberation: Creole Language Politics in the Caribbean (1986), Talking in Tones: A Study of Tone in Afro-European Creole Languages (1989) and Talking Rhythm, Stressing Tone: Prominence in Anglo-West African Creole Languages (2002). Karen Carpenter is Acting Head of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies at Mona and Director of the Caribbean Sexuality Research Group in Kingston, Jamaica. She is the editor of Interweaving Tapestries of Culture and Sexuality in the Caribbean (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017) and author of Questioning Jewish Caribbean Identity (2018).

This original study looks at language practices in a government agency responsible for granting or denying legal status to transnational migrants in Spain. Drawing on a unique corpus of naturally-occurring verbal interactions between state officials and migrant petitioners as well as ethnographic materials and interviews, it provides a fascinating insight into the relationship between language, social heterogeneity, and practices of exclusion. The book investigates how a national agency with homogenizing views of citizenship copes with the fundamental contradiction resulting from the state's c

The contributions of this book deal with the issue of language variation. They all share the assumption that within the language faculty the variation space is hierarchically constrained and that minimal changes in the set of property values defining each language give rise to diverse outputs within the same system. Nevertheless, the triggers for language variation can be different and located at various levels of the language faculty. The novelty of the volume lies in exploring different loci of language variation by including wide-ranging empirical perspectives that cover different levels of analysis (syntax, phonology and prosody) and deal with different kinds of data, mostly from Romance and Germanic languages, from dialects, idiolects, language acquisition, language attrition and creolization, analyzed from both diachronic and synchronic perspectives. The volume is divided in three parts. The first part is dedicated to synchronic variation in phonology and syntax; the second part deals with diachronic variation and language change, and the third part investigates the role of contact, attrition and acquisition in giving rise to language change and language variation in bilingual settings. This volume is a useful tool for linguistics of diverse theoretical persuasions working on theoretical and comparative linguistics and to anyone interested in language variation, language change, dialectology, language acquisition and typology.

The study looks at polyglotism in the Valle d'Aosta from two points of view: Part 1 (external language history) presents a panorama of the history of this region from prehistory/Romanization to the 1990s with special reference to linguistic situation and political autonomy. Part 2 (sociolinguistic) is the empirical and synchronic counterpart to section 1. It contains a research report on studies undertaken from 1987 on in 24 locations of the Valle d'Aosta and involving over 100 informants.

This book provides a forum for theoretical, methodological and empirical contributions to research on language(s), multimodality and public space, which will advance new ways of understanding the sociocultural, ideological and historical role of communication practices and experienced lives in a globalised world. Linguistic Landscape is viewed as a metaphor and expanded to include a wide variety of discursive modalities: imagery, non-verbal communication, silence, tactile and aural communication, graffiti, smell, etc. The chapters in this book cover a range of geographical locations, and capture the history, motives, uses, causes, ideologies, communication practices and conflicts of diverse forms of languages as they may be observed in public spaces of the physical environment. The book is anchored in a variety of theories, methodologies and frameworks, from economics, politics and sociology to linguistics and applied linguistics, literacy and education, cultural geography and human rights.

Such documents often show features for varieties of English which do not necessarily appear in later sources or which are not attested with the same range or in the same set of grammatical contexts. This has to do with the vernacular nature of the letters, i.e. they were written by speakers who had a lower level of education and whose speech, and hence their written form of language, does not appear to have been guided by considerations of standardness and conformity to external norms of language. Furthermore, the writers of the emigrant letters, examined in the current volume, were very unlikely to have known of, still less have used, manuals of letter writing. Emigrant letters thus provide a valuable source of data in tracing the possible development of features in varieties of English in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand"--

The volume is expertly framed by its editors as centering around three key themes: online cooperation and convergence, metapragmatic negotiations, and digital practices related to conflict and controversy. An excellent resource for students and scholars interested in the latest research on technologically-mediated communication.’ —Camilla Vásquez, University of South Florida, USA This book contributes to the scholarly debate on the forms and patterns of interaction and discourse in modern digital communication by probing some of the social functions that online communication has for its users. An array of experts and scholars in the field address a range of forms of social interaction and discourses expressed by users on social networks and in public media. Social functions are reflected through linguistic and discursive practices that are either those of ‘convergence’ or ‘controversy’ in terms of how the discourse participants handle interpersonal relations or how they construct meanings in discourses. In this sense, the book elaborates on some very central concerns in the area of digital discourse analysis that have been reported within the last decade from various methodological perspectives ranging from sociolinguistics and pragmatics to corpus linguistics. This edited collection will be of particular interest to scholars and students in the fields of digital discourse analysis, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, social media and communication, and media and cultural studies. This volume showcases innovative research on dialectal, vernacular, and other forms of “oral,” speech-like writing in digital spaces. The shift from a predominantly print culture to a digital culture is shaping people's identities and relationships to one another in important ways. Using examples from distinct international contexts and language varieties (kiAmu, Lebanese, Ettounsi, Shanghai Wu, Welsh English, and varieties of American English) the authors examine how people use unexpected codes, scripts, and spellings to say something about who they are or aspire to be. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars interested in the impact of social media on language use, style, and orthography, as well as those with a broader interest in literacy, communication, language contact, and language change.
