Preliminary Material -- Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- The Strathspey as National Expression in Eighteenth-Century Song and Poetry -- Masterful Narratives: Policing the Public Body and Positioning the Practice of National Dance -- Choreographing Character, 1814-1815: The New Scottish Novels of Walter Scott and Christian Isobel Johnstone -- Unauthorised Women in Scottish Novels, 1814-1824: Social Dance, Fictional Outings, and National Concerns -- Epilogue -- Bibliography -- Index -- 18th- and 19th-century scottish literature. Pointed Encounters establishes the literary significance of representations of dance in poetry, song, dance manuals, and fiction written between 1750 and 1830. Presenting original readings of canonical texts and fresh readings of neglected but significant literary works, this book traces the complicated role of social dancing in Scottish culture and identifies the hitherto unexplored motif of dance as an outwardly conforming, yet covertly subversive, expression of Scottish identity during the period. The volume draws upon diverse yet mutually revealing texts, from traditional dance and music to Sir Walter Scott and contemporary Scottish women novelists, to offer students and scholars of Scottish and English literature a fresh insight into the socio-cultural context of the British state after 1746

"Over the past four decades, East and Southeast Asia have seen a proliferation of heritage sites and remembrance practices which commemorate the region's bloody conflicts of the period 1931-45. Remembering Asia's World War Two examines the origins, dynamics and repercussions of this regional war 'memory boom.' Focusing on non-textual vehicles for public commemoration and considering both the local and international dimensions of war commemoration within the area, Remembering Asia's World War Two is ideal for students and scholars of Asian history, Asian studies, memory studies and heritage studies"--

The discrepancy between the organized war-veteran culture and the development of overall German culture since the 1970s at the latest, the closely-defined ideological framework involved, and the static nature of the values, attitudes, and guiding principles upheld within that framework provide ideal conditions for the reconstruction of a form of cultural memory associated with a clearly defined group of language users. The analysis of speeches held on Commemoration Day (Volkstrauertag) and of interviews with the writers of those speeches indicates the almost total uniformity of the communicative patterns employed in them. Those patterns are discussed here from the perspective of research on strategies for coming to terms with wartime experiences

In Resurrecting Nagasaki, Chad R. Diehl examines the reconstruction of Nagasaki City after the atomic bombing of August 9, 1945. Diehl illuminates the genesis of narratives surrounding the bombing by following the people and groups who contributed to the city's rise from the ashes and shaped its postwar image in Japan and the world. Municipal officials, survivor-activist groups, the Catholic community, and American occupation officials interpreted the destruction and envisioned the reconstruction of the city from different and sometimes disparate perspectives. Each group's narrative situated the significance of the bombing within the city's postwar urban identity in unique ways, informing the discourse of reconstruction as well as its physical manifestations in the city's revival. Diehl's analysis reveals how these atomic narratives shaped both the way Nagasaki rebuilt and the ways in which popular discourse on the atomic bombings framed the city's experience for decades

Since World War II, French and Francophone literature and film have repeatedly sought not to singularize the Holocaust as the paradigm of historical trauma but rather to connect its memory with other memories of violence, namely that of colonialism. These works produced what Debarati Sanyal calls a "memory-in-complicity" attuned to the gray zones that implicate different regimes of violence across history as well as those of different subject positions such as victim, perpetrator, witness, and reader/spectator. Examining a range of works from Albert Camus, Primo Levi, Alain Resnais, and Jean-Paul Sartre to Jonathan Littell, Assia Djebar, Giorgio Agamben, and Boualem Sansal, Memory and Complicity develops an inquiry into the political force and ethical dangers of such implications, contrasting them with contemporary models for thinking about trauma and violence and offering an extended meditation on the role of aesthetic form, especially allegory, within acts of transhistorical remembrance. What are the political benefits and ethical risks of invoking the memory of one history in order to address another? What is the role of complicity in making these connections? How does complicity, rather than affect based discourses of trauma, shame and melancholy, open a critical engagement with the violence of history? What is it about literature and film that have made them such powerful vehicles for this kind of connective memory work?As it offers new readings of some of the most celebrated and controversial novelists, filmmakers, and playwrights from the French-speaking world, Memory and Complicity addresses these questions in order to reframe the way we think about historical memory and its political uses today

This book interrogates how people living in a society with an extremely complicated, violent past, only a short history of independence and a desire to belong to Europe engage with the past, both within their families and as members of a national community. In line with other scholarship on memory, it shows that many Estonians desire an established collective story, as they live in a society where their national identity is quite regularly under threat. At the same time however, that same closure is perceived to pose a threat to the survival of Estonian culture and independence. This book provides an intimate insight in the lives of Estonians from the countryside, former deportees, young intellectuals and memory activists, who all in their own ways act as guardians of a national history: a history which they wish to keep alive, apolitical and as close to their family stories as possible

This book examines how we can conceive of a "postcolonial museum" in the contemporary epoch of mass migrations, the internet and digital technologies. The authors consider the museum space, practices and institutions in the light of repressed histories, sounds, voices, images, memories, bodies, expression and cultures. Focusing on the transformation of museums as cultural spaces, rather than physical places, is to propose a living archive formed through creation, participation, production and innovation. The aim is to propose a critical assessment of the museum in the light of those transcultural and global migratory movements that challenge the historical and traditional frames of Occidental thought. This involves a search for new strategies and critical approaches in the fields of museum and heritage studies which will renew and extend understandings of European citizenship and result in an inevitable re-evaluation of the concept of "modernity" in a so-called globalised and multicultural world
