This diploma thesis deals with the topic of manipulaion through language in the dystopian novels Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The first part of the thesis includes a brief definition of the term ‘totalitarianism’ as well as an explanation of how the concept of totalitarianism is rooted in utopian thinking and to what extent this ruling system differs from an authoritarian dictatorship. The next part includes an analysis of the political, economic and social organisation of the three fictional worlds represented in the novels. The second part of the thesis discusses the topic of language and power. Here, the following questions are addressed: What is language? How does language influence thought? How do politicians use the power of language to achieve personal goals? The diploma thesis concludes on an analysis of the three dystopian works with regard to the topic of ‘language and power’.

The amount of dystopian literature and other media products concerned with an apocalypse has dramatically increased in recent years. Readers have shown great interest in literary works which deal with the end of the world and particularly with what happens after cataclysmic events. Margaret Atwood, one of Canada’s most prominent contemporary writers, has published several dystopian novels; among them The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and her most recent novel The Heart Goes Last (2015). Her MaddAddam trilogy deals with a post-apocalyptic society struggling to survive after a man-made plague epidemic has nearly extinguished humanity. Cormac McCarthy, in his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Road, deals with an abandoned dystopian wasteland, and a father and son who have survived an unknown calamitous event. Both authors use literature to raise awareness of environmental issues, as well as the dangers of science and religious extremism, and the potential downfall of humanity. The aim of this thesis is to compare and contrast Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, MaddAddam and The Road with regard to certain thematic aspects, namely, religion, feminism, and ecocriticism. This analysis will attempt to achieve a better understanding of the post-apocalyptic worlds created by McCarthy and Atwood, and, to some extent, offer new ways of thinking about humanity’s current behaviour.

ger: Mit ihren Romanen The Handmaid?s Tale, Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood trat die berühmte kanadische Autorin Margaret Atwood in die Fußspuren dystopischer Schriftsteller wie George Orwell und Aldous Huxley. Andererseits nehmen Oryx and Crake und The Year of the Flood andere aktuelle Themen in Angriff, wie Gentechnik und Technologie, exzessives Konsumverhalten und Gewalt, was letztendlich zur Auslöschung der ganzen Menschheit führt. With her novels The Handmaid?s Tale, Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood the acclaimed Canadian author Margaret Atwood has followed in the footsteps of dystopian writers such as George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. Her works attempt to raise awareness of current issues such as religious extremism, environmental problems, consumerism, science and technology. Atwood advises humans to stop neglecting these issues and start treating the planet and themselves with much more caution in order to sustain humanity. In this thesis I attempt to explore the societal and religious structures that are presented by Atwood in her formation of a terrifying speculation of what the future might look like. The Handmaid?s Tale primarily deals with the threat of religious extremism to obtain control over the population and particularly women. Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood, on the other hand, mainly tackle other very pressing issues such genetic engineering and technology, excessive consumerism and violence taken to the extreme, which eventually lead to the annihilation of all humankind. Atwood confronts her readers with the question of what it means to be human in a society which is abusing and neglecting the very essence of humanity and how the remaining humans cope with living in a world after the apocalypse has hit it. On the surface these three novels differ in their topics but on second glance there are numerous similarities connecting Atwood?s dystopian works. Although Atwood?s works might appear unrealistic and extreme she has stressed that all the issues discussed in her novels exist already in our society and are not mere figments of her imagination. Her speculations give us a prediction of the possible developments that might occur in the next few decades if we do not act to prevent them.

This book traces the chronological development of Atwood's global reputation from Canadian nationhood to world-wide politics and from the role of women to gender identity. Chapters offer a comprehensive overview of her poetry, novels, shorter fiction, children's books, criticism and experimental multi-genre work. There are more detailed analyses of Atwood's most influential writing, from her first novels such as Surfacing and The Edible Woman, through the works that ensured her international reputation such as The Handmaid's Tale, Cat's Eye and The Robber Bride, to her most recent work, Alias Grace and Oryx and Crake. Wynne-Davies presents these works through an overall understanding of Atwood's intelligence, humour, linguistic dexterity, breadth of vision and ethical integrity
