Samuel Beckett and the Language of Subjectivity is the first sustained exploration of aporia as a vital, subversive, and productive figure within Beckett's writing as it moves between prose and theatre. Informed by key developments in analytic and continental philosophies of language, Tubridy's fluent analysis demonstrates how Beckett's translations - between languages, genres, bodies, and genders - offer a way out of the impasse outlined in his early aesthetics. The primary modes of the self's extension into the world are linguistic (speaking, listening) and material (engaging with bodies, spaces and objects). Yet what we mean by language has changed in the twenty-first century. Beckett's concern with words must be read through the information economy in which contemporary identities are forged. Derval Tubridy provides the groundwork for new insights on Beckett in terms of the posthuman: the materialist, vitalist and relational subject cathected within differential mechanisms of power

The article investigates the significance of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's metaphysics of beauty. It addresses both his aesthetic of harmony and his aesthetic of light. Neither of these is a simple repetition of its traditional niodel. Regarding the former aesthetic, the article addresses the wavs in which Coleridge draws oil many traditions of philosophy and theology. without forcing these often-divergent stiands into an artificial synthesis. While some of the resultant tensions are resolved very sliggestively, others are equally suggestive because of the irresolution tliat is preserved within theni. I construe this more complex model of harmony in terins of his serpentine line of beauty - a form which achieves colierence witliout closure or final resolution. Tlie article also shows that the latter aesthetic, which is often overlooked, has the capacity to clarify some important but otherwise aporetic dimensions of his thought The interrelationship between these two aesthetics is addressed from a number of perspectives: Coleridge's empliasis on glimmering light is related to the serpentine line; both aesthetics are shown to be grounded iii experience. Tlic article thus demonstrates that Coleridge's metaphysics of beauty is not posited over and against phenomenology, but exists as an opening onto. and even an impetus toward, a deeper attentiveness to the world of phenomena, materiality, and human experience.

Introduction -- 1 The old credentials - Watt -- 2 This cursed first person - The Unnamable - Not I -- 3 No knowing not said - How it is - What Where -- 4 Whom else - Footfalls - Rockaby - Ill Seen Ill Said -- 5 Rare flickers - Company -- Conclusion "Samuel Beckett and the Language of Subjectivity is the first sustained exploration of aporia as a vital, subversive, and productive figure within Beckett's writing as it moves between prose and theatre. Informed by key developments in analytic and continental philosophies of language, Tubridy's fluent analysis demonstrates how Beckett's translations--between languages, genres, bodies, and genders--offer a way out of the impasse outlined in his early aesthetics. The primary modes of the self's extension into the world are linguistic (speaking, listening) and material (engaging with bodies, spaces and objects). Yet what we mean by language has changed in the 21st century. Beckett's concern with words must be read through the information economy in which contemporary identities are forged. Derval Tubridy provides the groundwork for new insights on Beckett in terms of the posthuman: the materialist, vitalist and relational subject cathected within differential mechanisms of power"--
