    Die vorliegende wissenschaftliche Arbeit befasst sich mit der Rezeption der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur im deutschsprachigen literarischen Feld, bzw. im Verlagsgebiet, in der deutschsprachigen Öffentlichkeit und in der romanistischen Literaturwissenschaft. Ziel der Arbeit ist, den paratextuellen Diskurs zu untersuchen, der die literarischen Texte algerischer französischsprachiger Autoren in einen neuen sprachlichen und literarischen Kontext transferiert und dabei die Rolle der verschiedenen Akteure des literarischen Feldes (Verleger, Übersetzer, Literaturkritiker und Literaturwissenschaftler) im kulturellen Transfer und im interkulturellen Dialog aufzuzeigen. Diese Arbeit will einen Beitrag dazu leisten, den interkulturellen Austausch und den Dialog zwischen Algerien und dem deutschsprachigen Raum aufzuzeigen. Die zentrale Fragestellung richtet sich auf die Art des Interesses an der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur, einer Literatur aus der arabisch-islamischen Welt, im deutschsprachigen Raum: Wie und in welchem Kontext werden literarische Werke algerischer Autoren im deutschsprachigen literarischen Feld rezipiert? Warum wird von wem was wie selektiert, veröffentlicht und rezipiert? Im Zentrum der Darstellung steht der Rezipient und seine Wahrnehmungsweise, seine Lesemotivation und seine Produktionsbedingungen. Es lässt sich anhand dieser Rezeptionsforschung herausstellen, dass die Rezeptionssituation der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur im deutschsprachigen literarischen Feld nicht allgemein beurteilt werden kann. Es lassen sich Unterschiede in den Rezeptionsmodi dieser Literatur bei den einzelnen Rezipienten innerhalb derselben literarischen Vermittlungsinstanz erkennen. Allgemein betrachtet lässt sich sagen, dass es um eine mangelhafte Präsenz der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur im deutschsprachigen literarischen Feld handelt. Es ist eher die Rede von der Rezeption der bekanntesten Autoren, die jedoch auf dem persönlichen Interesse einzelner Rezipienten beruht. In den meisten Fällen lässt sich die Wahrnehmungsweise dieser Literatur als eine faktuale Rezeption beurteilen: Die politisch-historischen Ereignisse (algerischer Befreiungskrieg: 1954-1962, Bürgerkrieg: 1990er, arabische Revolution 2011), und die soziokulturelle Situation bzw. die Situation der Frau im Islam scheinen wesentliche Faktoren zu sein, die die Rezeption dieser Literatur fördern und zu einer „reduktionistischen“ Lektüre dieser Literatur führen. Die Beschäftigung mit dieser Literatur hängt mit verschiedenen Faktoren zusammen, die den Rezeptionsprozess beeinflussen. Einerseits ist die fehlende Anwesenheit dieser Literatur auf dem deutschsprachigen „Buchmarkt“ mit dem geringen Kenntnisstand über die Herkunftskultur der Autoren begründet, was letztendlich auf die Frage der literarischen Sozialisation zurückzuführen ist. Andererseits spielen die Verhältnisse des „Buchmarktes“, wo das Zentralanliegen der Verlage die Bedürfnisse des potentiellen Lesers darstellen, neben den spezifischen literarischen Bedingtheiten für die Rezeption (z.B. Vorerfahrung mit literarischen Texten französischsprachiger Autoren maghrebinischer Herkunft) einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Lektüre und die Vermittlungsart dieser Literatur. In der romanistischen Literaturwissenschaft lässt sich anhand der in dieser Arbeit dargestellten wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen zum Werk Assia Djebars und Maïssa Beys eine neue Tendenz in der Wahrnehmung dieser Literatur feststellen. Untersuchungen zu nicht thematischen Aspekten in der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur wurden vorgenommen, in denen ein kritischer Blick in die bisher herrschenden Leseart literarischer Texte algerischer Autoren entworfen wird. Dabei ist es als kritisch zu betrachten, dass die literarischen Texte französischer Sprache von Autoren maghrebinischer Herkunft im Kontext eines weiten Feldes von „problematischen“ Begriffen wie die der „Postkolonial“, „Hybridität“, „Littérature beur“ besprochen werden, was zum Schluss zu der Frage führt: Sind diese Begriffe brauchbare Konzepte für die Analyse literarischer Texte, die durch Interkulturalität geprägt sind, wie die literarischen Texte algerischer französischsprachiger Autoren?

    In these original readings of Albert Camus' novels, short stories, and political essays, David Carroll concentrates on Camus' conflicted relationship with his Algerian background and finds important critical insights into questions of justice, the effects of colonial oppression, and the deadly cycle of terrorism and counterterrorism that characterized the Algerian War and continues to surface in the devastation of postcolonial wars today. During France's "dirty war" in Algeria, Camus called for an end to the violence perpetrated against civilians by both France and the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) and supported the creation of a postcolonial, multicultural, and democratic Algeria. His position was rejected by most of his contemporaries on the Left and has, ironically, earned him the title of colonialist sympathizer as well as the scorn of important postcolonial critics. Carroll rescues Camus' work from such criticism by emphasizing the Algerian dimensions of his literary and philosophical texts and by highlighting in his novels and short stories his understanding of both the injustice of colonialism and the tragic nature of Algeria's struggle for independence. By refusing to accept that the sacrifice of innocent human lives can ever be justified, even in the pursuit of noble political goals, and by rejecting simple, ideological binaries (West vs. East, Christian vs. Muslim, "us" vs. "them," good vs. evil), Camus' work offers an alternative to the stark choices that characterized his troubled times and continue to define our own.     In den langen 1960er-Jahren, im Kontext des Kalten Krieges und der Dekolonisierung, wurde das Konzept »Dritte Welt« weltweit bekannt. In Frankreich war es auch für linke Gruppen zentral, die sich durch radikalen Antikolonialismus auszeichneten. Sie halfen der algerischen Befreiungsbewegung, protestierten gegen den Vietnamkrieg und solidarisierten sich mit postkolonialen Arbeitsmigranten. Christoph Kalter untersucht diese neue radikale Linke und ihre Wahrnehmung der Welt als Revolutionsraum. Er rückt damit die 68er-Proteste in ein neues Licht und zeigt, wie sehr das Ende der Kolonialreiche auch Europa selbst veränderte.Ausgezeichnet mit dem Walter-Markov-Preis für Geschichtswissenschaften 2011.

    In these original readings of Albert Camus' novels, short stories, and political essays, David Carroll concentrates on Camus' conflicted relationship with his Algerian background and finds important critical insights into questions of justice, the effects of colonial oppression, and the deadly cycle of terrorism and counterterrorism that characterized the Algerian War and continues to surface in the devastation of postcolonial wars today. During France's "dirty war" in Algeria, Camus called for an end to the violence perpetrated against civilians by both France and the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) and supported the creation of a postcolonial, multicultural, and democratic Algeria. His position was rejected by most of his contemporaries on the Left and has, ironically, earned him the title of colonialist sympathizer as well as the scorn of important postcolonial critics. Carroll rescues Camus' work from such criticism by emphasizing the Algerian dimensions of his literary and philosophical texts and by highlighting in his novels and short stories his understanding of both the injustice of colonialism and the tragic nature of Algeria's struggle for independence. By refusing to accept that the sacrifice of innocent human lives can ever be justified, even in the pursuit of noble political goals, and by rejecting simple, ideological binaries (West vs. East, Christian vs. Muslim, "us" vs. "them," good vs. evil), Camus' work offers an alternative to the stark choices that characterized his troubled times and continue to define our own.     This monograph explores the ways in which canonical Francophone Algerian authors, writing in the late-colonial period (1945–1962), namely Kateb Yacine, Mohammed Dib, Mouloud Feraoun, Mouloud Mammeri and Assia Djebar, approached the representation of Algerian women through literature. The book initially argues that a masculine domination of public fields of representation in Algeria contributed to a postcolonial marginalization of women as public agents. However, it crucially also argues that the canonical writers of the period, who were mostly male, both textually acknowledged their inability to articulate the experiences and subjectivity of the feminine Other and deployed a remarkable variety of formal and conceptual innovations in producing evocations of Algerian femininity that subvert the structural imbalance of masculine symbolic hegemony. Though it does not shy from investigating those aspects of its corpus that produce ideologically conditioned masculinist representations, the book chiefly seeks to articulate a shared reluctance concerning representativity, a pessimism regarding the revolution's capacity to deliver change for women, and an omnipresent subversion of masculine subjectivity in its canonical texts.
