This volume draws together three core concerns for the social sciences: the senses and embodiment, emotions, and space and place. The chapters engage with intersections between space, sense and emotion through a range of experiences and activities including dance, bullfights, healing ceremonies, celebrations and music. The authors herein critically examine diverse contexts, in and through which relations between sensate bodies, spaces and places, and emotions are constituted. The chapters draw on long-term ethnographic fieldwork from which the authors critically engage with their material on a fundamental level and contribute to contemporary debates about the nature and experience of emotions, the sensing body, and spaces and places.

A new literary history of Arabic poetry from 500–750 CE that includes hundreds of lines of poetry never before translated into EnglishTo interpret the Quran’s Arabic, early medieval Muslims turned to pre-Islamic poetry, a corpus that the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin called “the archive of the Arabs.” While this principle seems straightforward, pre-Islamic Arabs did not, in fact, think of themselves as either pre-Islamic or Arab. The term Arab barely appears at all in pre-Islamic poetry. The Emergence of Arabic Poetry reexamines this early poetry to reconstruct what pre-Islamic culture actually entailed. Nathaniel A. Miller draws on a wide range of texts, including hundreds of lines of poetry never before translated into English—in addition to new inscriptional, archaeological, and non-Arabic sources—to explore the diverse world of pre- and early-Islamic Arabia in which Islam developed. Miller traces the emergence of two regional identities, and their distinctive poetic traditions, in the Arabian Peninsula of late antiquity: Najdi in the center and northeast and Hijazi in the southwest. The book shows how later efforts of Muslim scholars to use early poetry as an aesthetic, linguistic ideal to interpret the Quran resulted in an image of a unitary, exceptional, and isolated Arab identity and culture. These scholars drew on the Najdi tradition, canonizing its forms as classical Arabic poetry par excellence, and solidifying many tropes of Arabness that are still ubiquitous today: of nomadism, performative generosity, and martial equestrianism. However, Miller argues, it was the neglected Hijazi tradition that was actually more central to the emergence of early Islam.Early Arabic poetry has been largely overlooked in current scholarship in adjacent fields, largely due to twentieth-century controversies over whether this corpus is legitimate or was forged. In combining a reconstruction of pre-Islamic poetry’s social function with a consideration of the circumstances of its later canonization, The Emergence of Arabic Poetry offers an urgently needed reappraisal of a significant but underexamined poetic corpus, as well as a new literary history of the origins of Arabic poetry from 500 to 750 CE

We investigate theoretically and empirically how exporters adjust their markups across destinations depending on bilateral distance, tariffs, and the quality of their exports. Under the assumption that trade costs are both ad valorem and per unit, our model predicts that markups rise with distance and fall with tariffs, but these effects are heterogeneous and are smaller in magnitude for higher quality exports. We find strong support for the predictions of the model using a unique data set of Argentinean firm-level wine exports combined with experts wine ratings as a measure of quality.

This report describes best environmental management practices for food and beverage manufacturers. Best environmental management practices are those techniques, measures and actions that can be implemented by food and beverage manufacturers to minimise their impact on the environment all along the value chain of their products. They were identified together with sectoral experts on the basis of practices actually implemented by environmental frontrunners. The report outlines best environmental management practices that are broadly applicable to all food and beverage manufacturers, such as the carrying out of an environmental assessment, sustainable supply chain management, cleaning operations, improvement of energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, optimisation of transport and distribution, refrigeration and freezing operations and food waste prevention. Additionally, specific best practices for nine individual subsectors are presented, namely the processing of coffee, manufacture of olive oil, manufacture of soft drinks, manufacture of beer, production of meat and poultry meat products, manufacture of fruit juice, cheese making operations, manufacture of bread, biscuits and cakes and manufacture of wine. Alongside best environmental management practices, the report also identifies suitable sector specific environmental performance indicators related to the topic of each best practices, and, when possible, benchmarks of excellence, corresponding to the level of performance achieved by frontrunners. This report can be used by food and beverage manufacturers as a source of information to identify relevant actions they can implement to improve their environmental performance. On its basis, the EMAS (EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) Sectoral Reference Document on Best Environmental Management Practice for the food and beverage manufacturing sector was developed (according to Article 46 of Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009).

Evidence suggests that consumers seek to become more expert about hedonic products to enhance their enjoyment of future consumption occasions. Current approaches to becoming expert center on cultivating an analytic mindset. In the present research the authors explore the benefit to enthusiasts of moving beyond analytics to cultivate a holistic style of processing. In the taste context the authors define holistic processing as non-verbal, imagery-based, and involving narrative processing. The authors conduct qualitative interviews with taste experts (Master Sommeliers) to operationalize the holistic approach to hedonic learning, and then test it against traditional analytic methods in a series of experiments across a range of hedonic products. The results suggest that hedonic learning follows a sequence of stages whose order matters, and that the holistic stage is facilitated by attending to experience as a narrative event and by employing visual imagery. The results of this multi-method investigation have implications for both managers and academics interested in how consumers learn to become expert in hedonic product categories

The evaluation examines the effects of the various instruments of the Common Market Organisation (Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013) applicable to the wine sector, e.g. National Support Programmes, scheme of authorisations for vine plantings, rules concerning oenological practises, marketing, labelling, certification and monitoring and control systems. The information collected from case studies, interviews with stakeholders and data analysis at the EU level provided insights into the contribution of the wine policy to its objectives of market balance, quality and competitiveness of the EU wine sector. Over the 2013-2018 period considered, the economic performance of the EU wine sector was improved. The National Support Programmes fostered the productivity of wine growers, the efficiency of wine-making equipment and the quantitative and qualitative adaptation of EU wine products to the market demand. These, along with positive market trends, contributed to maintaining a high degree of competitiveness of EU wine products on global markets. The EU rules on oenological practices and labelling provide quality and safety guarantees, while recently the computerised systems have reinforced the effectiveness of the wine certification and control processes. The added value of the EU framework is demonstrated, as it was a key instrument in creating a level playing field among Member States.
