Canada relies on third party certification of products and materials to manage health and safety issues. Thousands of mandatory standards are embedded in federal, provincial, and territorial regulations and in national safety codes. European manufacturers of products and materials can therefore access Canada's market by engaging CABs that have been accredited by the SCC. These bodies have the required staff, expertise, and facilities to identify relevant mandatory standards and safety codes, perform the required tests and issue relevant certification marks on products and materials sold by wholesalers and retailers. This Report also provides a pathway for manufacturers wishing to commercialise products or materials when no Canadian standard currently exists. This Report is meant to provide an overview of the Canadian standardisation system to European manufacturers of products and materials, who should take advantage of the above-outlined information along with other provisions of the CETA agreement to access the 10th largest economy in the world.

The present study surveys the ongoing standardisation activities on AI carried out by ESOs (European Standards Organizations) and international Standards Development Organizations (SDOs). In the present study we investigate the alignment between AI related standards published or in development and the requirements proposed in the proposal for Artificial Intelligence Act.. The aim is to identify possible gaps and underdeveloped areas in the current standardisation activities. The main goal is to provide a contribution to the definition of a European standardisation roadmap for implementing the Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA) (European Commission, 2021). The document is organized as follows: Section 1 provides an overview of the different dimensions of standards and introduces the adopted landscaping methodology. Then, Sections 2 and 3 discuss the applied methodology to identify the standards relevant to the AIA and the considered standard population, respectively. Then, Section 4 delves into the proposed regulatory framework for AI (i.e. the AIA), introducing its scope and requirements. Section 5 provides a high-level analysis to map the identified standard populations onto the AIA requirements. Section 6 provides an in-depth analysis of the mapping, introducing an innovative methodology. Applying the proposed methodology, Section 7 discusses an executive version of the AIA requirements, according to a semi structured model. Section 8 discusses the obtained results of the in-depth analysis and provides initial reflections on the possible gaps. Finally, Section 9 summarizes findings, outline possible recommendations, and introduce potential future work.

This study assesses the potential benefits, costs and risks of data sharing in the EU financial sector and implications for consumers, enterprises and the financial sector itself. We examine the coherence of a proposed regulation on financial data access with the broader EU data legislation and recommend a number of changes and modifications. This document was provided by the Policy Department for Economic, Scientific and Quality of Life Policies at the request of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON).

The increasing number of FinTech services provided by newcomer start-ups, traditional financial institutions and big tech companies can bring new competition challenges to the playing field. Some factors can result in anticompetitive behaviours, namely the network effects derived from the use of online platforms, the access to customer data, standardisation, interoperability and the use of algorithms. Combined with a service-by-service analysis, the study provides both, descriptive analysis and normative tools to anticipate and manage anticompetitive behaviours as they occur. This document was provided by Policy Department A at the request of the ECON Committee.

The years from 2013 to 2016 have been characterized by two major opposing pressures in the postal sector: (i) letter volume decline, and (ii) growth in e-commerce packets/parcels volume. These contrasting pressures underpin different challenges for all stakeholders in the postal sector. Whereas letter volume decline has shaped the postal market and continues to drive changes, the growing e-commerce industry creates new opportunities and demands for the postal market to respond to and to minimise the negative impact of letter volume decline. The combination of strong letter volume decline and growth in parcel volumes has important operational and economic implications for postal networks. In several instances, it has also called for substantial changes in postal regulation.
