Righteous Anger in Contemporary Italian Literary and Cinematic Narratives analyses the role of passion— particularly indignation—and how it shapes intention and inspires the work of many contemporary Italian writers and filmmakers. Noting how art often holds the power to shed light on issues surrounding inequity, inequality, and injustice, the book explores the ethical function of art as a tool in resistance and sociopolitical protest, thereby validating the axiom that ethics and aesthetics can still collaborate in the creation of meaning. Drawing on a range of Italian novels and films and examining the works of artists such as Tiziano Scarpa, Simona Vinci, Paolo Sorrentino, and Monica Stambrini, the author shows that anger can be used constructively as a weapon of resistance against negative and oppressive forces

Letters from prison testifying to deeply felt ethical principles have a long history, extending from antiquity to the present day. In the early modern era, the rise of printing houses helped turn these letters into a powerful form of political and religious resistance. W. Clark Gilpin’s fascinating book examines how letter writers in England—ranging from archbishops to Quaker women—consolidated the prison letter as a literary form.Drawing from a large collection of printed prison letters written from the reign of Henry VIII to the closing decades of the seventeenth century, Gilpin explores the genre's many facets within evolving contexts of reformation and revolution. The writers of these letters portrayed the prisoner of conscience as a distinct persona and the prison as a place of redemptive suffering where bearing witness had the power to change society. The Letter from Prison features a diverse cast of characters and a literary genre that combines drama and inspiration. It is sure to appeal to those interested in early modern England, prison literature, and cultural forms of resistance

Scholarship on the book of Daniel has undergone a significant shift since the publication of K. Koch's groundbreaking work, The Rediscovery of Apocalyptic, in 1972. Despite significant achievements in understanding the historical-critical issues of the book, scholarship viewed Daniel's apocalyptic visions as embarrassing. The renaissance in Daniel studies that began in the 1970s has since produced a robust conversation and newer theory-driven insights around well-established areas of interest. These include Daniel's textual traditions and compositional history, the function of its genres, the social settings of its writers, and Daniel's near eastern literary and cultural milieu. New areas of interest identified in the landmark study of J.J. Collins and P.W. Flint (2001; 2002), namely the history of reception and political theologizing, have also gained ground. Daniel's reversal of fortunes is due to new methodologies as well as a fundamental paradigm shift in interpretation; this change has seen Daniel scholarship move away from the search for Daniel's historical meaning, narrowly construed, and toward the quest to understand what Daniel does to and for its readers.
