This is the first French verse version of Ovid’s Metamorphosis, translated by the sixteenth century poet Clément Marot. Marot’s translation marks not only a literary achievement, but also cleaves to deontological standards worthy of modern translators. A systematic analysis of the text reveals Marot’s choices of variation, as well as their deep coherence.

In the last quarter of the XV. Century was printed in Würzburg the "Expositio Psalmorum", attributed to the Würzburg Bishop Bruno compilation of various commentaries on psalms, biblical odes and other texts ecclesiastical content. One of the first printed editions served as a template for the Russian-Slavonic translation "Tolkovaja Psaltir 'Brunona Gerbipolenskogo", which Dmitrij Gerasimov completed on behalf of the then Novgorod archbishop Makarij in 1535; thanks to the great spread of German prints in Novgorod and the surrounding area, an otherwise quite insignificant psalm commentary was also given special attention in the Eastern Slavs. The aim of this dissertation is to acquaint the "Tolkovaja Psaltir" with the Slavic professional audience, highlighting historical, linguistic and cultural peculiarities that emphasize the importance of this hitherto neglected work, both in terms of the translation problem and in terms of translation on the tradition of lore in the Slavic Orthodox world.

The premise that Western culture has undergone a 'pictorial turn' (W.J.T. Mitchell) has prompted renewed interest in theorizing the visual image. In recent decades researchers in the humanities and social sciences have documented the function and status of the image relative to other media, and have traced the history of its power and the attempts to disempower it. What is an Image in Medieval and Early Modern England? engages in this debate in two interrelated ways: by focusing on the (visual) image during a period that witnessed the Reformation and the invention of the printing press, and by exploring its status in relation to an array of texts including Arthurian romance, saints' lives, stage plays, printed sermons, biblical epic, pamphlets, and psalms. This interdisciplinary volume includes contributions by leading authorities as well as younger scholars from the fields of English literature, art history, and Reformation history. As with all previous collections of essays produced under the auspices of the Swiss Association of Medieval and Early Modern English Studies, it seeks to foster dialogue between the two periods

  9. The Problematic Word of מִכְתָּם

The Hebrew word מכִתְָּם creates a problem because its meaning is controversial. The Hebrew lexicon, BDB (1906) and TWOT lexicon (2003) confirm this difficulty, saying, »the meaning of this word is unknown«. PONS Kompaktwörterbuch Althebräisch (2015) states that this word is untranslated, while other sources translate it as song, prayer, or epigram. Allen P. Ross (2012, 48), a Hebrew scholar, indicates that its meaning is disputed. Ibn Ezra (2009, 112) interprets that this word refers to a very precious Psalm. He compares it with ketem paz or the finest gold in Song of Songs 5:11 because both words are derived from the same root. This perplexity also occurs in the ancient texts as they differ in their translations. This article, therefore, attempts to study and solve this dilemmatic word in ancient texts with a textual criticism and a contextual study as its methodology. At the end, the meaning of מכִתְָּם will be applied into Christian education field. Hebrejska beseda מכִ תְָּםָ vzbuja vprašanja, ker je njen pomen sporen.

The premise that Western culture has undergone a ‘pictorial turn’ (W.J.T. Mitchell) has prompted renewed interest in theorizing the visual image. In recent decades researchers in the humanities and social sciences have documented the function and status of the image relative to other media, and have traced the history of its power and the attempts to disempower it. What is an Image in Medieval and Early Modern England? engages in this debate in two interrelated ways: by focusing on the (visual) image during a period that witnessed the Reformation and the invention of the printing press, and by exploring its status in relation to an array of texts including Arthurian romance, saints’ lives, stage plays, printed sermons, biblical epic, pamphlets, and psalms. This interdisciplinary volume includes contributions by leading authorities as well as younger scholars from the fields of English literature, art history, and Reformation history. As with all previous collections of essays produced under the auspices of the Swiss Association of Medieval and Early Modern English Studies, it seeks to foster dialogue between the two periods.
