    Die Edition musiktheatraler Texte gehört zweifellos zu den schwierigeren Aufgaben im Bereich des musikalischen Editionswesens. Dass heute immer noch Grundsatzfragen verhandelt werden, ist ein deutliches Indiz für ein fortbestehendes Forschungsdesiderat, das bereits in den 1980er Jahren von der neuen Disziplin der "Librettologia" formuliert wurde und die das Bewusstsein für diese Textsorte geschärft hat. Vor diesem Hintergrund versuchte das interdisziplinäre Symposium (2012), dessen Bericht hier vorliegt, eine Art Bestandsaufnahme der verschiedenen methodologischen Ansätze in Literatur- und Musikwissenschaft, aber auch angesichts nationaler Prägungen des editorischen Umgangs mit musiktheatralen Texten. Entsprechend breit ist das Spektrum der behandelten Operntexte vom 17. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt einerseits auf dem Ineinandergreifen von Dialog, Gesang, Tanz und Bühne, andererseits auf dem Nebeneinander editorischer Darstellungsmedien von der konventionellen Buchform über hybride bis hin zu rein digitalen Präsentationsformen. Insofern ist das Buch sowohl für traditionell operierende Editionsphilologen wie auch für Vertreter der Digital Humanities von Interesse

    It may certainly be said that nothing can be assumed about Shakespeare: on the one hand, the Elizabethan poet seems to be thriving, with more editions, productions, studies, and translations appearing every year; on the other hand, in a time of global crisis and decolonization, the question of why Shakespeare is relevant at all is now more pertinent than ever. Shakespeare in Succession approaches the question of relevance by positioning Shakespeare as a participant as well as an object of adaptive translation, a labour that has always mediated between the foreign and the domestic, between the past and the present, between the arcane and the urgent. The volume situates Shakespeare on a continuum of transfers that can be understood from cultural, spatial, temporal, or linguistic points of view by studying how the text of Shakespeare is transformed into other languages and examining Shakespeare himself as a kind of translator of previous times, older stories, and prior theatrical and linguistic systems. Contending with the poet’s contemporary fate, Shakespeare in Succession asks how Shakespeare’s work can be offered to the multicultural present in which we live, and how we might relate our position to that of the iconic writer

    Venetian playwright and pioneer of modern theatre Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793) led a ‘double life’ as a librettist, authoring nearly as many libretti as comedies- libretti which, born from the same mind and the same hand that brought forth his famous, and famously controversial, overhaul of the practices of comic theatre, could not
    but push the limits of the standing tradition to open a new chapter in opera history. Goldoni became one of the first to give shape to the dramma giocoso per musica, an innovative, realistic, and enduring new genre with intimate connections to prose comedy that met with overwhelming international success, becoming the foundation for the works of future generations, including W. A. Mozart and his Italian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. Perhaps because of his stature and influence as a comic playwright, Goldoni has rarely been considered as an innovator in the musical sphere. This study aims to shed new light on his primary role in the evolution of Classical opera, and on the legacy of his innovations in the European musical tradition.

The down-and-out from time to time is possessed with movements almost like spasms, in which he imitates, he gestures, he rants.     The unification of the arts in the "Gesamtkunstwerk" of courtly opera has repeatedly been the subject of musicological research, but so far, for example, the specific spatial-architectural side of courtly opera has hardly been considered. Music theater means scenic performance and architecture alike. Both formed essential components of lordly representation in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the Old Kingdom, therefore, not only the aristocratic nobility arranged music-theatrical performances, but smaller courts also brought ballets and operas on stage. The interdisciplinary contributions of a conference of the Rudolstädter Arbeitskreis zur Residenzkultur deal with the topic in a European perspective and explain the diverse connections that existed between the music theater and the courtly space in the architectural, political-cultural and social sense. Die Vereinigung der Künste im „Gesamtkunstwerk“ der höfischen Oper bildete zwar schon wiederholt den Gegenstand musikwissenschaftlicher Forschungen, doch wurde beispielsweise die spezifisch räumlich-architektonische Seite der höfischen Oper bislang kaum beachtet. Musiktheater meint aber szenische Aufführung und Architektur gleichermaßen. Beide bildeten wesentliche Komponenten herrschaftlicher Repräsentation im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert. Im Alten Reich veranlasste daher nicht nur der reichsständische Adel musiktheatrale Aufführungen, sondern auch kleinere Höfe brachten Ballette und Opern auf die Bühne. Die interdisziplinären Beiträge einer Tagung des Rudolstädter Arbeitskreises zur Residenzkultur widmen sich dem Thema in einer europäischen Perspektive und erläutern die vielfältigen Verbindungen, die zwischen dem Musiktheater und dem höfischen Raum im architektonischen, politisch-kulturellen sowie sozialen Sinn bestanden.

    Situated at the intersection between the history, historiography and aesthetics of twentieth-century music, this study uses Benjamin Britten’s operas to illustrate the ways in which composers, critics and audiences mediated the “great divide” between modernism and mass culture. Reviving mid-century discussions of the “middlebrow,” Chowrimootoo demonstrates how these works allowed audiences to have their modernist cake and eat it: to revel in the pleasures of consonance, lyricism and theatrical spectacle, even while enjoying the prestige that came from rejecting them. By focusing on moments when reigning aesthetic oppositions and hierarchies threatened to collapse, Middlebrow Modernism offers a powerful model for recovering shades of grey in the black-and-white historiographies of twentieth-century music.

    The fifteen essays of Performing History glimpse the diverse ways music historians "do" history, and the diverse ways in which music histories matter. This book’s chapters are structured into six key areas: historically informed performance; ethnomusicological perspectives; particular musical works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" war histories; operatic works that works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" power or enlightenment; musical works that deploy the body and a broad range of senses to convey histories; and histories involving popular music and performance. Diverse lines of evidence and manifold methodologies are represented here, ranging from traditional historical archival research to interviewing, performing, and composing. The modes of analyzing music and its associated texts represented here are as various as the kinds of evidence explored, including, for example, reading historical accounts against other contextual backdrops, and reading "between the lines" to access other voices than those provided by mainstream interpretation or traditional musicology

    Die Edition musiktheatraler Texte gehört zweifellos zu den schwierigeren Aufgaben im Bereich des musikalischen Editionswesens. Dass heute immer noch Grundsatzfragen verhandelt werden, ist ein deutliches Indiz für ein fortbestehendes Forschungsdesiderat, das bereits in den 1980er Jahren von der neuen Disziplin der "Librettologia" formuliert wurde und die das Bewusstsein für diese Textsorte geschärft hat. Vor diesem Hintergrund versuchte das interdisziplinäre Symposium (2012), dessen Bericht hier vorliegt, eine Art Bestandsaufnahme der verschiedenen methodologischen Ansätze in Literatur- und Musikwissenschaft, aber auch angesichts nationaler Prägungen des editorischen Umgangs mit musiktheatralen Texten. Entsprechend breit ist das Spektrum der behandelten Operntexte vom 17. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt einerseits auf dem Ineinandergreifen von Dialog, Gesang, Tanz und Bühne, andererseits auf dem Nebeneinander editorischer Darstellungsmedien von der konventionellen Buchform über hybride bis hin zu rein digitalen Präsentationsformen. Insofern ist das Buch sowohl für traditionell operierende Editionsphilologen wie auch für Vertreter der Digital Humanities von Interesse
