Theory suggests that new market entrants play a special role for the creation of new technological pathways required for the development and diffusion of more sustainable forms of production, consumption, mobility and housing. Unconstrained by past technological investments, entrants can introduce more radical environmental innovations than incumbent firms whose past R&D decisions make them locked into path-dependent trajectories of outdated technologies. Yet, little research exists which provides empirical evidence on new ventures' role in the technological transition towards decarbonization and dematerialization. This is mainly because patenting is rare among start-ups and also no historical track record about their R&D investments exists, both data sources commonly used to determine a company's technological footprint. To enable the identification of clean technology-oriented market entrants and to better understand their role as adopters and innovators for sustainable market solutions, this paper presents framework that systematically maps new ventures' business models to a set of well-defined clean technologies. For this purpose, the framework leverages textual descriptions of new entrants' business summaries that are typically available upon business registration and allow for a good indication of their technological orientation. Furthermore, the framework uses textual information from patenting activities of established innovators to model semantic representations of technologies. Mapping company and technology descriptions into a common vector space enables the derivation of a fine-granular measureof entrants' technological orientation. Applying the framework to a survey of German start-up firms suggests that clean technology-oriented market entrants act as accelerators of technical change: both by virtue of their existing products and services and through a high propensity to introduce additional environmental innovations.

We provide the first empirical evidence on how media-driven narratives influence cross-border institutional investment flows. Applying natural language processing techniques to one-and-a-half million newspaper articles, we document substantial cross-country variation in sentiment and risk indices constructed from domestic media narratives about China in 15 countries. These narratives significantly affect portfolio flows, even after controlling for macroeconomic and financial fundamentals. This impact is smaller for investors with greater familiarity or private information about China and larger during periods of heightened uncertainty. Political and environmental narratives are as influential as economic narratives. Investors react more sharply to negative narratives than positive ones.

This work aimed to reproduce the methodology of Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael Osborne of 2017 for estimating the automation probabilities of occupations in Brazil. These estimates are potentially important for professionals and policymakers because they can guide the career of a worker, as well as define priority courses that educational institutions should offer in order to maximize employment opportunities in the country. We consulted the opinion of 69 scholars and professionals that are experts in machine learning to ground the estimation the automation probability of Brazilian occupations. The findings indicate that a large part of the occupations can be automated in the next years. In addition, it can be seen that these professions with a higher risk of automation show a trend of growth over time, which may result in a high level of unemployment in the coming years if professionals and the government do not prepare for this scenario.

We assess whether online data on vacancies and applications to a job board are a suitable source for studying skills dynamics outside of Europe and the United States, where a rich literature has examined skills dynamics using online vacancy data. Yet, the knowledge on skills dynamics is scarce for other countries, irrespective of their level of development. We first propose a taxonomy that systematically aggregates three broad categories of skills - cognitive, socioemotional and manual - and fourteen commonly observed and recognizable skills sub-categories, which we define based on unique skills identified through keywords and expressions. Our aim is to develop a taxonomy that is comprehensive but succinct, suitable for the labour market realities of developing and emerging economies and adapted to online vacancies and applicants' data. Using machine-learning techniques, we then develop a methodology that allows implementing the skills taxonomy in online vacancy and applicants' data, thus capturing both the supply and the demand side. Implementing the methodology with Uruguayan data from the job board BuscoJobs, we assign skills to 64 per cent of applicants' employment spells and 94 per cent of vacancies. We consider this a successful implementation since the exploited text information often does not follow a standardized format. The advantage of our approach is its reliance on data that is currently available in many countries across the world, thereby allowing for country-specific analysis that does not need to assume that occupational skills bundles are the same across countries. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to explore this approach in the context of emerging economies.

Corporate climate disclosures are considered an essential prerequisite to managing climate-related financial risks. At the same time, current disclosures are imprecise, inaccurate, and greenwashing-prone. We introduce a deep learning approach to enable comprehensive climate disclosure analyses by fine-tuning the \climatebert model. From 14,584 annual reports of the MSCI World index firms from 2010 to 2020, we extract the amount of cheap talk, defined as the share of precise versus imprecise climate commitments. We then test various hypotheses by linking three different climate initiatives, namely the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure, the Science-Based Targets Initiative, and the Climate Action 100+, to the economic channels of signaling, credibility, and active engagement. In particular, we ask whether these initiatives decrease cheap talk by disciplining companies in how they define and disclose actionable climate commitments in their annual reports

In this paper we quantitatively analyse monetary policy statements of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 1998 to 2017, across the regimes of five governors. We first ask whether the content and focus of the statements have changed with the adoption of inflation-targeting as a framework for conducting monetary policy. Next, we study the influence of various aspects of monetary policy communication on financial markets. Using natural language processing tools, we construct measures of linguistic and structural complexity that capture governor-specific trends in communication. We find that while RBI's monetary policy communication is linguistically complex on average, the length of monetary policy statements has gone down and readability has improved significantly in the recent years. We also find that there has been a persistent semantic shift in RBI's monetary policy communication since the adoption of inflation-targeting. Finally, using a simple regression model we find that lengthier and less readable statements are linked to both higher trading volumes and higher returns volatility in the equity markets, though the effects are not persistent.

We show that the news is a rich source of data on distressed firm links that drive firm- level and aggregate risks. The news tends to report about links in which a less popular firm is distressed and may contaminate a more popular firm. This constitutes a contagion channel that yields predictable returns and downgrades. Shocks to the degree of news-implied firm connectivity predict increases in aggregate volatilities, credit spreads, and default rates, and declines in output. To obtain our results, we propose a machine learning methodology that takes text data as input and outputs a data-implied firm network.

Legitimacy is a crucial factor determining the success of technologies in the early stages of development and for maintaining resource flows as well as public and political support across the technology life cycle. In sustainability transitions that unfold over long periods of time, the maintenance of legitimacy of technologies identified as vital for sustainability becomes a key challenge. In the energy sector, wind power contributes to the transition to an energy system with low greenhouse gas emissions. In Germany, wind power recently faced a series of lawsuits and decreasing investment activity. Therefore, we assess the legitimacy of wind power in Germany by analyzing newspaper articles from four national newspapers from 2009 to 2018. A large amount of articles motivates the use of topic models and statistical methods to shed light on the changing alignment of wind power with its context. The results show that various issues temporarily gain prominence on the agenda. Lately, the legitimacy of wind power in Germany is increasingly challenged by adverse effects on humans, animals, and landscapes. Policymakers and project developers may address aspects of pragmatic legitimacy, such as civic participation and the local distribution of profits.

This paper investigated the usage of artificial intelligence and text mining techniques for classification of court judgments and discussed potential alternative applications in formulation and evaluation of public policies. Besides, we built a survey of studies related to Jurimetry based on the specialized scientific literature and detailed the operationalization of the of textual data treatment, as well as basic concepts and methods of text mining. Finally, we performed an empirical analysis of classification of legal texts into four categories using real data from the Brazilian 2nd Federal Regional Court collected by IpeaJus, the database about the Brazilian Justice System from Ipea, discussing the results in light of various quantitative evaluation metrics and prospects for future developments in different contexts.

For more than forty years analysts have pointed out that society might be too slow in adopting energy efficiency technologies, a phenomenon known as the Energy Efficiency Gap. There are persistent market barriers that impede these efforts. Eliciting these barriers and their heterogeneity is key for policy design. In this paper, we use narratives, a novel approach based on unstructured text answers in surveys, to elicit the barriers and determinants of energy efficiency investments. Using recent advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP), we turn narratives into quantifiable metrics to rank households' barriers and determinants. We find that financial motives are not the primary barriers or determinants of energy efficiency investments. Instead, we find that such investments are highly opportunistic and co-benefits, such as ecological concerns and comfort, also play an important role. Although there is substantial heterogeneity across the population in the type of barriers and determinants, demographics and building characteristics poorly predict heterogeneity patterns. This has important implications for the targeting of policies. Narratives could be a novel and effective way to implement policy targeting.

We classify the sentiment of a large sample of StockTwits messages as bullish, bearish or neutral, and create a stock-aggregate daily sentiment polarity measure.Polarity is positively associated with contemporaneous stock returns. On average, polarity is not able to predict next-day stock returns. But when we focus on specificevents, defined as sudden peaks of message volume, polarity has predictive power onabnormal returns. Polarity-sorted portfolios illustrate the economic relevance of our sentiment measure
