    As anyone who has read Chaucer's Canterbury Tales knows, Middle English literature is rife with sexually explicit language and situations. Less canonical works can be even more brazen in describing illicit acts of sexual activity and sexual violence. Such scenes and language were not, however, included exclusively for titillation. In Obscene Pedagogies, Carissa M. Harris argues instead for obscenity's usefulness in sexual education. She investigates the relationship between obscenity, gender, and pedagogy in Middle English and Middle Scots literary texts from 1300 to 1580 to show how sexually explicit and defiantly vulgar speech taught readers and listeners about sexual behavior and consent.Through innovative close readings of literary texts including erotic lyrics, single-woman's songs, debate poems between men and women, Scottish insult poetry battles, and The Canterbury Tales, Harris demonstrates how through its transgressive charge and galvanizing shock value, obscenity taught audiences about gender, sex, pleasure, and power in ways both positive and harmful. She focuses in particular on understudied female-voiced lyrics and gendered debate poems, many of which have their origin in oral culture, and includes teaching-ready editions of fourteen largely unknown anonymous lyrics in women's voices. Harris's own voice, proudly witty and sharply polemical, inspires the reader to address these medieval texts with an eye on contemporary issues of gender, violence, and misogyny

    The Lawyer in Dickens takes a closer look at the construction of his types of lawyers. While Dickens’s critique of the legal system and its representatives is almost proverbial, a closer look at his lawyers uncovers a complex and ambiguous construction that questions their status as Victorian gentlemen. These characters offer a complex psychology that often surpasses their minor or stereotypical role within various Dickens novels, for they act not only as alter egos for different protagonists, but also exhibit behaviour that reveals their abusive attitude towards women.This book argues that Uriah Heep lays the groundwork for Dickens’s conception of the lawyer in his later works. The close analysis identifies a strong anxiety about the uncertain social status of professionals in the law, but also unfolds a deeply troubled attitude towards women. The novels express admiration for the lawyer’s professional power, yet the individual characters are simultaneously exposed as ungentlemanly. This discussion shows that the lawyer in Dickens is a difficult creature not only because of his professional ambition and social transgression, but also because of his intrusion into the domestic space and into the lives of others, especially women.

    Im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert wurde die Literatur zum Verhandlungsort jüdischer Weiblichkeitsentwürfe, zu einem Experimentierraum, in dem zeitge¬nössische Diskurse über und anhand jüdischer Frauenfiguren ausgetragen und erprobt wurden. Es entstand eine Wechselwirkung zwischen literarischen Texten und der Wahrnehmung jüdischer Frauen, zwischen einer meist männlichen Perspektive und einem weiblich-jüdischen Selbstbild. Denn literarischen Weiblichkeitsentwürfen war zumeist ein Schreiben über (jüdische) Frauen inhärent. Weiblich(-jüdisches) Schreiben blieb eine Randerscheinung. Das gilt insbesondere für das 20. Jahrhundert: Die Pathologisierung von Frauen(-körpern) im Fin de Siècle wirkte nach und nahm Einfluss auf alle Lebensbereiche; für jüdische Frauen galt das durch eine Engführung von Antisemitismus und Misogynie in besonderer Weise. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung stehen daher literarische Präsentationen jüdischer Frauen - jüdische Weiblichkeit als Paradigma männlicher Autorschaft In the nineteenth and, in particular, twentieth centuries, literature became a place to negotiate ideas of Jewish femininity, an experimental space in which contemporary discourses were carried out and tried out on and using female Jewish characters. Literary portrayals of Jewish women and therefore Jewish femininity as a paradigm of male authorship are thus at the center of this study

    Reading the impossible has never seemed less possible. A few decades ago, critical readings could view the collapse of foundationalism optimistically. With meaning no longer soldered onto being, there was hope for all those beings whose meaning had been forever ordained by Nature or the Divine. Critical reading thus became a way of exploring the devious workings of knowledge and power. But as non-foundational systems of meaning have proven to be so perfectly suited to the transactional logics of the market, reading for the impasses of meaning has come to be seen as quixotic, impractical, and dated. To concur with that view, Elizabeth Weed argues, is to embrace the fantasy told by the neoliberal order. To read the impossible is to disrupt that fantasy, with its return to stable categories of marketable identity, in order to contest the inexorable workings of misogyny and racism. This book seeks to disturb the positivity of identity in the hope of retrieving the impossibility of sexual difference, an impossibility that has its effects in the Real of misogyny.A return to the famous debate between Derrida and Lacan on the impossibility of sexual difference yields two different readings of the impossible. In reconsidering these questions, Weed shows how the practice of reading can powerfully stage the wiles of language and the unconscious. In returning to that earlier moment in the context of current debates on the role of reading and interpretation, Weed offers a fresh perspective on what is at stake for critical reading in the neoliberal university

    The editors of Proverbs structured the book to counter traditional negative sentiments about women. Proverbs such as 19.13, “a stupid child is a ruin to a father, and a wife’s quarreling is a continual dripping of rain” (NRSVue), are misogynistic, presenting problems for the contemporary reader and arguably for the ancient editor as well. Their strategy to combat these old sayings included beginning and ending the book with positive feminine figures, Wisdom in the prologue (Prov 1–9) and the Strong Woman in Prov 31.10-31, and using negative masculine stereotypes as a foil for the negative feminine ones. Recent translations that use gender-neutral language mask these tropes about men’s behavior.

    As anyone who has read Chaucer's Canterbury Tales knows, Middle English literature is rife with sexually explicit language and situations. Less canonical works can be even more brazen in describing illicit acts of sexual activity and sexual violence. Such scenes and language were not, however, included exclusively for titillation. In Obscene Pedagogies, Carissa M. Harris argues instead for obscenity's usefulness in sexual education. She investigates the relationship between obscenity, gender, and pedagogy in Middle English and Middle Scots literary texts from 1300 to 1580 to show how sexually explicit and defiantly vulgar speech taught readers and listeners about sexual behavior and consent.Through innovative close readings of literary texts including erotic lyrics, single-woman's songs, debate poems between men and women, Scottish insult poetry battles, and The Canterbury Tales, Harris demonstrates how through its transgressive charge and galvanizing shock value, obscenity taught audiences about gender, sex, pleasure, and power in ways both positive and harmful. She focuses in particular on understudied female-voiced lyrics and gendered debate poems, many of which have their origin in oral culture, and includes teaching-ready editions of fourteen largely unknown anonymous lyrics in women's voices. Harris's own voice, proudly witty and sharply polemical, inspires the reader to address these medieval texts with an eye on contemporary issues of gender, violence, and misogyny

    The Lawyer in Dickens takes a closer look at the construction of his types of lawyers. While Dickens?s critique of the legal system and its representatives is almost proverbial, a closer look at his lawyers uncovers a complex and ambiguous construction that questions their status as Victorian gentlemen. These characters offer a complex psychology that often surpasses their minor or stereotypical role within various Dickens novels, for they act not only as alter egos for different protagonists, but also exhibit behaviour that reveals their abusive attitude towards women.This book argues that Uriah Heep lays the groundwork for Dickens?s conception of the lawyer in his later works. The close analysis identifies a strong anxiety about the uncertain social status of professionals in the law, but also unfolds a deeply troubled attitude towards women. The novels express admiration for the lawyer?s professional power, yet the individual characters are simultaneously exposed as ungentlemanly. This discussion shows that the lawyer in Dickens is a difficult creature not only because of his professional ambition and social transgression, but also because of his intrusion into the domestic space and into the lives of others, especially women

    Im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert wurde die Literatur zum Verhandlungsort jüdischer Weiblichkeitsentwürfe, zu einem Experimentierraum, in dem zeitgenössische Diskurse über und anhand jüdischer Frauenfiguren ausgetragen und erprobt wurden. Es entstand eine Wechselwirkung zwischen literarischen Texten und der Wahrnehmung jüdischer Frauen, zwischen einer meist männlichen Perspektive und einem weiblich-jüdischen Selbstbild. Denn literarischen Weiblichkeitsentwürfen war zumeist ein Schreiben über (jüdische) Frauen inhärent. Weiblich(-jüdisches) Schreiben blieb eine Randerscheinung. Das gilt insbesondere für das 20. Jahrhundert: Die Pathologisierung von Frauen(-körpern) im Fin de Siècle wirkte nach und nahm Einfluss auf alle Lebensbereiche; für jüdische Frauen galt das durch eine Engführung von Antisemitismus und Misogynie in besonderer Weise. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung stehen daher literarische Präsentationen jüdischer Frauen - jüdische Weiblichkeit als Paradigma männlicher Autorschaft In the nineteenth and, in particular, twentieth centuries, literature became a place to negotiate ideas of Jewish femininity, an experimental space in which contemporary discourses were carried out and tried out on and using female Jewish characters.
