Written by Propertius, Rome's greatest poet of love, who was born around 50 b.c., a contemporary of Ovid, these elegies tell of Propertius' tormented relationship with a woman he calls "Cynthia." Their connection was sometimes blissful, more often agonizing, but as the poet came to recognize, it went beyond pride or shame to become the defining event of his life.     This study transforms our understanding of Roman love elegy, an important and complex corpus of poetry that flourished in the late first century b.c.e. Sharon L. James reads key poems by Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid for the first time from the perspective of the woman to whom they are addressed—the docta puella, or learned girl, the poet's beloved. By interpreting the poetry not, as has always been done, from the stance of the elite male writers—as plaint and confession—but rather from the viewpoint of the women—thus as persuasion and attempted manipulation—James reveals strategies and substance that no one has listened for before

    Gegenstand ist die Rezeption eines genuin volkssprachigen literarischen Phänomens, des Petrarkismus, in derjenigen Literatur des 15. bis 17. Jahrhunderts, die in der lateinischen Gelehrtensprache verfasst ist. Während der Petrarkismus, d.h. das Dichten über die Liebe in der Art des Francesco Petrarca (1304–1375), eines der wichtigsten Vertreter der frühen italienischen Literatur, für die volkssprachigen Literaturen, insbesondere für die italienische, französische, englische und deutsche, bereits gründlich erforscht worden ist, wurde die umfangreiche Liebesdichtung, die in dieser Zeit in petrarkistischer Manier auf Latein verfasst wurde, erst ansatzweise untersucht. Dieser Band ist der erste, in dem ausschließlich Texte, die zwischen dem 15. und dem 17. Jahhundert in verschiedenen europäischen Sprachräumen (italienisch, französisch, englisch, deutsch, niederländisch, polnisch, litauisch, schwedisch) auf Latein geschrieben wurden, im Hinblick darauf untersucht werden, wie in ihnen der Petrarkismus rezipiert, angeeignet, modifiziert, mit Elementen der antiken Literatur amalgamiert wird. Er ist also in die Erforschung der frühneuzeitlichen Statuskonkurrenz des gelehrten Latein mit den innovativen ästhetischen Errungenschaften der vorlkssprachigen Literaturen einzuordnen und verfolgt einen dezidiert interdisziplinären Ansatz. Daher bedient er das Interesse sowohl der Vertreter der lateinischen Literatur als auch der Nationalliteraturen der Frühen Neuzeit This volume contains studies on how Petrarchism, i.e., poems about love in the style of the Italian Francesco Petrarca (1304–1375), was received in the Latin literature written from the fifteenth to seventeenth century.     Die lateinische Liebesdichtung begann nicht erst mit Catull. Nur ist ihr Umfang und ihre Verbreitung nicht mehr zu bemessen, zu viele Texte sind im Laufe der Zeit verlorengegangen. Laevius ist der einzige vorcatullsche Liebesdichter, dessen ursprünglich umfangreiches Werk heute noch mit knapp 50 Fragmenten unterschiedlicher Länge verhältnismäßig gut bezeugt ist. Es trug den Titel Erotopaegnia und bestand aus narrativen Gedichten zu erotischen Themen aus dem Mythos. Diese Arbeit legt neben einer Edition und einem Interpretationskommentar auch übergreifende Untersuchungen zu den Erotopaegnia vor. Sie thematisiert in einem weiteren Rahmen ebenso die frühe lateinische Literaturgeschichte sowie allgemeine Fragen zu Literatur und Gesellschaft der späteren Römischen Republik. Als Ergebnis kann ein neues und vertieftes Verständnis des rätselhaften Dichters Laevius gezeichnet und die Forschung zur Geschichte der lateinischen Liebesdichtung auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt werden: Laevius war kein zeitnaher und unmittelbarer Vorgänger der ‚Neoteriker‘, sondern Vertreter einer altlateinischen Liebesdichtung, die sich stilistisch und inhaltlich stark von Catull und den Liebeselegikern unterscheidet Laevius is the only pre-Catullan Latin love poet whose work can still be reconstructed. This book collects and discusses approximately 50 fragments from his Erotopaegnia, a collection of narrative poems dealing with various themes from Greek myths. Through comprehensive studies and a detailed interpretative commentary, this publication not only illuminates the significance of Laevius himself but also sheds new light on republican poetry as a whole: The Erotopaegnia are not an example of 'neoteric' poetry, but rather serve as an important representative of archaic Latin love poetry, differing significantly from Catullus and the love elegiacs in both content and style

    Die lateinische Liebesdichtung begann nicht erst mit Catull. Nur ist ihr Umfang und ihre Verbreitung nicht mehr zu bemessen, zu viele Texte sind im Laufe der Zeit verlorengegangen. Laevius ist der einzige vorcatullsche Liebesdichter, dessen ursprünglich umfangreiches Werk heute noch mit knapp 50 Fragmenten unterschiedlicher Länge verhältnismäßig gut bezeugt ist. Es trug den Titel Erotopaegnia und bestand aus narrativen Gedichten zu erotischen Themen aus dem Mythos. Diese Arbeit legt neben einer Edition und einem Interpretationskommentar auch übergreifende Untersuchungen zu den Erotopaegnia vor. Sie thematisiert in einem weiteren Rahmen ebenso die frühe lateinische Literaturgeschichte sowie allgemeine Fragen zu Literatur und Gesellschaft der späteren Römischen Republik. Als Ergebnis kann ein neues und vertieftes Verständnis des rätselhaften Dichters Laevius gezeichnet und die Forschung zur Geschichte der lateinischen Liebesdichtung auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt werden: Laevius war kein zeitnaher und unmittelbarer Vorgänger der ‚Neoteriker‘, sondern Vertreter einer altlateinischen Liebesdichtung, die sich stilistisch und inhaltlich stark von Catull und den Liebeselegikern unterscheidet Laevius is the only pre-Catullan Latin love poet whose work can still be reconstructed. This book collects and discusses approximately 50 fragments from his Erotopaegnia, a collection of narrative poems dealing with various themes from Greek myths. Through comprehensive studies and a detailed interpretative commentary, this publication not only illuminates the significance of Laevius himself but also sheds new light on republican poetry as a whole: The Erotopaegnia are not an example of 'neoteric' poetry, but rather serve as an important representative of archaic Latin love poetry, differing significantly from Catullus and the love elegiacs in both content and style

    Abstract: This article examines Adrienne Rich’s Twenty-One Love Poems in relation to Edna St Vincent Millay’s Fatal Interview. Discussing notions such as lyric voice and innovation within traditional genres, the author analyses how Millay’s attempts to challenge commonplace definitions of female sexuality impacted on Rich’s articulation of sexual desire. The intertextual dialogue between the above works reveals that Millay and Rich produced two remarkably similar erotic narratives, which resist masculinist conceptions of literary history and comment on the self-referentiality of poetic composition. Finally, the author approaches Fatal Interview as a work that foregrounds the significance of women’s bonding, and argues that it was precisely this aspect that caught Rich’s attention and helped the younger poet develop her feminist consciousness
