Literacy Practices in Transition explores the connections between local, situated literacy practices and global processes of mobility in the geographical space of the Nordic countries, an example of contemporary mobile societies. The detailed empirical analyses show how these connections affect individuals, practices and policies; how the global and local meet in discourses and practices and how people need to (re)negotiate their way in the complex and messy spaces in which they move. The volume challenges current trends in the global standardization of language and literacy education. Instead, it promotes the idea of literacy as a multiple, multilingual, multimodal and constantly contestable and negotiable phenomenon, which calls for the development of language and literacy education that is sensitive to the needs and experiences of the individual actors

Adult migrants with a more or less recent history of migration face considerable challenges in everyday life, which are linked to the demands of the dominant language environment. Especially challenging is the necessity to read and write in many different communicative situations. We present an ongoing qualitative interview study with a group of 12 Arabic speaking adults participating in contrastive literacy courses. Drawing on sociocultural perspectives on literacy we rely mainly on personal reports on literal events by these second language learners of German to investigate how they cope with literal challenges in everyday life and develop literacy practices. The interviews are carried out in Arabic by a multilingual research team. In this paper, we present our central theoretical categories as well as one part of the methodological design of the study and discuss some preliminary findings.
