    This book represents an attempt to capture different links between modern literature and music. The author examines strict intertextual correlations, the phenomena of musicality and musicality of literary works, the musical structure in literature, so-called musical literary texts. He focuses on the novel Le Cœur absolu by Philippe Sollers, the poem Todesfuge by Paul Celan, the Preludio e Fughe by Umberto Saba and the drama Judasz z Kariothu [Judas Iscariot] by Karol Hubert Rostworowski. The analysis also includes Stanisław Barańczak’s cycle of poems Podróż zimowa: Wiersze do muzyki Franza Schuberta [Winter Journey: Poems to the Music of Franz Schubert] and a fragment of Scène from Hérodiade by StéphaneMallarmé in Paul Hindemith’s composition «Hérodiade» de Stéphane Mallarmé.

    Ranging from Polish inspirations in contemporary authors such as Bernlef, Frank Westerman and Erwin Mortier, over the Central European successes of the now forgotten Jo van Ammers-Küller, to the Bulgarian character Firmin Debeljanov in The Sorrow of Belgium: with its focus on the various interrelations between the contemporary literature of the Low countries and the so-called smaller literary cultures located between the German and the Russian language areas, the volume Van Eeden tot heden offers a multi-faceted perspective on a hitherto barely explored topic in twentieth-century European literature. Due to the academic background of the contributing authors the emphasis is on Polish, Hungarian and Czech case studies, though the Balkans are also being dealt with – albeit less prominently. Whereas some contributions search for contacts, links and influences between literatures and literators, some other chapters set up textual encounters in which authors and their works are compared from a thematic, poetic, stylistic or generic angle. Apart from these comparative endeavors, another group of contributors offer reception analysis regarding the overall topic. In the last part of the volume the focus is on issues of (national) representation and the discursive strategies that are used for it.

    Der Sturz des Phaethon, Sohn des Sonnengotts Helios, geht als Mythos menschlichen Scheiterns an der Schnittstelle von individueller und kosmischer Katastrophe in Kunst und Literatur der Neuzeit ein. Ausgehend von den antiken Prätexten untersucht die vorliegende Studie diese Transformationen in der deutschen Literatur erstmals umfassend aus intertextueller Perspektive. Ziel ist dabei nicht eine erschöpfende Sammlung von Rezeptionsbeispielen, sondern die beispielhafte Analyse von Funktionen, Kontexten und Konjunkturen der je ambivalent gedeuteten mythischen Figuration und der je zugrundeliegenden (inter)textuellen und medialen Strategien von der Antike bis in die Gegenwartsliteratur. Neben den prominenten literarischen Phaethon-Versionen bei Goethe, Waiblinger, Achim von Arnim, C.F. Meyer oder Stefan George bezieht die Studie zahlreiche bislang nicht erschlossene Texte sowie auch bildkünstlerische und musikalische Adaptionen des Mythos und die europäischen Kontexte seiner Rezeption ein

In der Forschung wurde dies konstatiert, bisher aber nicht konsequent und umfassend untersucht. Die Studie analysiert die Funktionen und Implikationen intertextueller Referenzen in der Sangspruchdichtung exemplarisch am Sangspruchœuvre des Kanzlers, eines in der Forschung bislang wenig beachteten Dichters des späten 13. Jahrhunderts. Sie zeigt, dass Intertextualität ein zentrales Verfahren sangspruchdichterischer Textproduktion ist, das auf den prekären Status der Gattung reagiert: Die Strophen referieren auf gattungsfremde, geltungsstärkere Texte und Diskurse, um an deren Autorität zu partizipieren; zugleich arbeiten Referenzen auf die eigene Gattung deren Konsolidierung zu. Die der Sangspruchdichtung häufig unterstellte Epigonalität und Konventionalität erweisen sich insofern nicht einfach als mangelnde Kreativität, fehlende Originalität oder dichterische Unfähigkeit, sondern als Produkt bewusster Bestrebungen zur Konsolidierung einer eigenen Gattungstradition und Überwindung ihres prekären Status, an denen intertextuelle Verfahren zentral Anteil haben This differentiated analysis of the Sangspruch verses by Der Kanzler, a poet of the late thirteenth century, shows that intertextuality is the central device used in the text production of Sangspruchdichtung, which responds to its precarious status as a genre: its verses reference more prestigious texts that are alien to the genre in order to participate in their authority while consolidating their own tradition by alluding to other Sangsprüche

Many scholars regard Vergil's poem as an attempt to combine Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey into a single epic. Joseph Farrell challenges this view, revealing how the Aeneid stages an epic contest to determine which kind of story it will tell—and what kind of hero Aeneas will be.Farrell shows how this contest is provoked by the transgressive goddess Juno, who challenges Vergil for the soul of his hero and poem. Her goal is to transform the poem into an Iliad of continuous Trojan persecution instead of an Odyssey of successful homecoming. Farrell discusses how ancient critics considered the flexible Odysseus the model of a good leader but censured the hero of the Iliad, the intransigent Achilles, as a bad one. He describes how the battle over which kind of leader Aeneas will prove to be continues throughout the poem, and explores how this struggle reflects in very different ways on the ethical legitimacy of Rome’s emperor, Caesar Augustus.By reframing the Aeneid in this way, Farrell demonstrates how the purpose of the poem is to confront the reader with an urgent decision between incompatible possibilities and provoke uncertainty about whether the poem is a celebration of Augustus or a melancholy reflection on the discontents of a troubled age

Die vorliegende Arbeit leistet eine umfangreiche und gattungsübergreifende Bestandserhebung zu den literarischen Bearbeitungen des Ödipus-Stoffes. Den Schwerpunkt bilden dessen tragische Bearbeitungen bei Aischylos, Sophokles und vor allem Euripides im Spannungsfeld zwischen nachgewiesenen Abhängigkeiten und ausgeprägtem Innovationscharakter. Im Zuge dieser komparatistischen Untersuchung von einzelnen fragmentarisch oder vollständig erhaltenen Texten wird ein Bogen zu den römischen Dichtern Accius und Seneca geschlagen, um aufzuzeigen, in welchem Umfang und in welcher Weise sie auf die genannten griechischen Vorgänger rekurrieren. Insgesamt gelingt es dieser Untersuchung, nicht nur die gattungsinternen Abhängigkeiten der vielfältigen Ödipus-Verarbeitungen, sondern auch den Innovationsanspruch in einer breit angelegten Studie schärfer und systematischer als zuvor zu präsentieren This volume undertakes a comprehensive study of ancient dramatic renditions of the Oedipus theme, from the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides (the fragments of which are addressed in particular detail) through those of Seneca.     In diesem Buch wird Hegels Phänomenologie des Geistes als ein literarischer Text gedeutet, der seine Überzeugungskraft aus der Lektüre anderer Texte schöpft. Untersucht werden die politischen und ästhetischen Konsequenzen dieser Interpretation. Das dialektische Philosophieren ist ein Bedürfnis, die vergangenen Gedankensysteme - die Texte - in ihrer eigenen Logik als mangelhafte aufzuweisen und zu überwinden, um dadurch die letzte spekulative Synthese zu etablieren. Aber dieselbe Operation macht - so die Hauptthese des Buches - das Spekulative selbst verwundbar, das damit in seiner unselbständigen Verfassung und in seinem Scheitern aufgewiesen wird. Die im Buch dargestellten Gesten des Anleihens und der Affinität sind nicht nur für Hegels Stil prägend. Sie können auch das Dialektische selber neu bestimmen - als eine verschwindende, fast unmögliche Stimme, eine Bemühung, aus der Verschränkung unvereinbarer, konfligierender Diskurse einen Sinn zu gewinnen.
