    This chapter surveys the literature on the political-economy of oil and gas governance by focusing on the exploration, production and revenue sharing in the hydrocarbon sector. It follows O'Neill through the door into his writing room to give a blow-by-blow account of how he fought out in his plays his great life battles-love against hate, doubt against belief, life against death-to an ever-expanding understanding. It presents a new kind of criticism, showing how O'Neill's most intimate struggles worked their way to resolution through the drama of his plays. Alexander reveals that he was engineering his own consciousness through his plays and solving his life problems-while the tone, imagery, and richness of the plays all came out of the nexus of memories summoned up by the urgency of the problems he faced in them. By the way of O'Neill, this study moves toward a theory of the impulse that sets off a writer's creativity, and a theory of how that impulse acts to shape a work, not only in a dramatist like O'Neill but also in the case of writers in other mediums, and even of painters and composers. The study begins with Desire Under the Elms because that play's plot was consolidated by a dream that opened up the transfixing grief that precipitated the play for O'Neill, and it ends with Days Without End when he had resolved his major emotional-philosophical struggle and created within himself the voice of his final great plays. Since the analysis brings to bear on the plays all of his conscious decisions, ideas, theories, as well as the life-and-death struggles motivating them, documenting even the final creative changes made during rehearsals, this book provides a definitive account of the nine plays analyzed in detail (Desire Under the Elms, Marco Millions, The Great God Brown, Lazarus Laughed, Strange Interlude, Dynamo, Mourning Becomes Electra, Ah, Wilderness!, and Days Without End, with additional analysis of plays written before and after

Gottfried Benn und Felix Hartlaub schrieben innerhalb Deutschlands für die Schublade, während Hans Scholl intellektuellen Widerstand leistete. Thomas Mann blickte weithin zornig auf die »Innere Emigration« und kehrte aus dem Exil nur kurz in beide Teile Deutschlands zurück. Erich Auerbach skizzierte seit 1942 in Istanbul das Passionsmotiv in der Weltliteratur. Für Stefan Zweig endet das in Brasilien mit seinem Freitod. Die philosophischen Vorformen des totalitären Denkens untersuchte Karl Popper in Neuseeland seit 1945. Seine politischen Auswirkungen nach der Oktoberrevolution und im Kalten Krieg demonstrieren jeweils anders die Lebenswerke von Ossip Mandelstam und Gustaw Herling. Anfang des 21.     This paper argues for broadening the application of hysteresis to institutions, policy lockin, psychology, identity, and economic ideas. Hysteresis is an element of historical processes, and the real world is historical. That explains why hysteresis is pervasive and important. Hysteresis should be a fundamental building block of political economy. Expanding its application in economics is both an opportunity and a challenge. The opportunity is that it provides a means for incorporating political, sociological, and psychological forces which economics tends to neglect. That will enrich economics and can also provide a mutually enriching bridge to other social sciences. The challenge is introducing such concerns raises questions about the character of economics' knowledge claims, which is likely to trigger resistance from economists.

    Wassily Leontief met with decades of success for the development of input-output analysis, and yet he remained a staunch critic of the economics profession throughout his life. To understand his success, its limits, and the origins of his discontent, I separate the scientific activities of input-output from the system of belief built around it, and from the institutions set up to advance this research program. This leads to considering the interaction of Leontief's research program with other research programs through these three poles: the scientific debate, the collision of belief systems about the world, and an institutional fight for funds and researchers. The end result is a picture of how Leontief managed to build a successful research program where the science led to beliefs about the world that were able to justify building institutions promoting input-output, in an environment of competition and cooperation.

    Der vorliegende Beitrag skizziert ein ordonomisches Diskussionsangebot zur Korruptionsprävention durch und in Unternehmen. Hierzu nimmt er sowohl eine wirtschaftsethische (Korruptionsprävention durch Unternehmen) als auch unternehmensethische Perspektive ein (Korruptionsprävention in Unternehmen). Die Ordonomik zeigt in beiden Fällen, dass Unternehmen durch funktionale Bindungen einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Überwindung des Korruptionsproblems leisten können. Allerdings droht die Etablierung solcher funktionaler Bindungen oftmals daran zu scheitern, dass dysfunktionale Semantiken eine konstruktive Problemwahrnehmung erschweren. Wie insbesondere am Beispiel des Whistle-Blowing illustriert wird, bedarf es hier semantischer Aufklärung. In diesem Sinne lassen sich komplexe Probleme wie das der Korruption nur dann umfassend adressieren, wenn die Problemlösung auf der Ebene der Sozialstruktur und auf der Ebene der Semantik ansetzt. Es geht um Lernprozesse, die Innovation und gesellschaftliche Weiterentwicklung sowohl im Bereich der Institutionen als auch im Bereich der Ideen voranbringen. This article uses the perspective of ordonomics to discuss how the fight against corruption can be advanced through corporations and in corporations. Using an ordonomic approach to economic ethics, the article looks at how companies can contribute to addressing corruption in their business environment collectively. Drawing on an ordonomic approach to business ethics, it looks at the issue of integrity management within the individual business firm. In both cases, the ordonomic perspective shows that companies can contribute to preventing corruption if they learn to change the game through functional commitments. Such institutional reforms in the meta-game, however, become difficult if the mental models and normative notions in the social discourse promote a misguided problem analysis. Using in particular the example of the controversy about whistle-blowing, the article thus shows that complex problems such as the prevention of corruption require a two-tiered approach that addresses both the level of social structural reform as well as the level of semantic reflection and discourse. It argues that constructive social problem solving requires the interplay of institutional reform and ideational learning.

Dies zeigen Porträts von Gottfried Benn bis Stefan Zweig, von Hannah Arendt bis Tony Judt. Schreiben im Exil ist im »Jahrhundert der Extreme« ein Politikum. Die Essays blicken auf deutsche wie europäische Intellektuelle in politisch ganz verschiedenen Lebenssituationen. Gottfried Benn und Felix Hartlaub schrieben innerhalb Deutschlands für die Schublade, während Hans Scholl intellektuellen Widerstand leistete. Thomas Mann blickte weithin zornig auf die »Innere Emigration« und kehrte aus dem Exil nur kurz in beide Teile Deutschlands zurück. Erich Auerbach skizzierte seit 1942 in Istanbul das Passionsmotiv in der Weltliteratur. Für Stefan Zweig endet das in Brasilien mit seinem Freitod. Die philosophischen Vorformen des totalitären Denkens untersuchte Karl Popper in Neuseeland seit 1945. Seine politischen Auswirkungen nach der Oktoberrevolution und im Kalten Krieg demonstrieren jeweils anders die Lebenswerke von Ossip Mandelstam und Gustaw Herling. Anfang des 21.
