    Die Studie präsentiert neue wegweisende Erkenntnisse zur Produktion, Rezeption und Revision von Broadway-Dramen der Progressive Era (1890-1920) im Spannungsfeld konfligierender Geschlechterdiskurse mit dem Ziel, den immer noch üblichen negativen Pauschalbewertungen des Phänomens Broadway eine differenziertere Betrachtungsweise entgegenzusetzen. Die Progressive Era war eine Zeit rapiden gesellschaftlichen Wandels, geprägt durch ein spannungsvolles Gegeneinander von progressiven und konservativen Tendenzen, nicht zuletzt auch in Fragen der Geschlechterbeziehungen. Dieses Thema wurde auch in zahlreichen Stücken des zeitgenössischen Broadway-Theaters aufgegriffen, dessen rigides Regelkorsett jedoch kaum Spielraum für eine Behandlung der Thematik jenseits des vorgegebenen Konventionsrahmens ließ. Es gab allerdings vereinzelte Versuche, die ästhetischen und ideologischen Grenzen dieses Rahmens zu überwinden. Auf diesen bislang kaum beachteten Aspekt richtet sich das spezifische Erkenntnisinteresse der vorliegenden Arbeit. An einer Reihe von ausführlichen Text-Kontext-Analysen ausgewählter Stücke demonstriert sie die Strategien, mit denen die betreffenden Autor(inn)en in einem subtilen Wechselspiel von Anpassung und Subversion ihre geschlechterpolitische Reformagenda gegen die Restriktionen des Kommerztheaters verteidigen und dabei auch im ästhetischen Bereich zu durchaus beachtlichen Leistungen fähig sind, und zeigt so, dass auch in dieser populärkulturellen Theaterform ein größeres Innovations- und Subversionspotential virulent war als ihr in der bisherigen Forschung gemeinhin zugesprochen wird

    The connection between child development and gender can only be traced by analysing the complex interplay of many different individual and social, political and social, historical and cultural factors - it cannot be explored or empirically measured with the help of selective research. The current yearbook therefore presents theoretical, empirical-qualitative and empirically quantitative contributions and research reports that examine gender aspects of childhood life and learning. Dem Zusammenhang von kindlicher Entwicklung und Geschlecht lässt sich nur über die Analyse des komplexen Zusammenspiels vieler unterschiedlicher, individueller und gesellschaftlicher, politischer und sozialer, historischer und kultureller Faktoren auf die Spur kommen - er kann nicht mit Hilfe punktueller Recherchen erschlossen oder empirisch gemessen werden. Der aktuelle Jahrbuch-Band stellt deshalb theoretische, empirisch-qualitative und empirisch quantitative Beiträge und Forschungsberichte vor, die Geschlechteraspekte kindlichen Lebens und Lernens untersuchen. Aus dem Inhalt: Caryl Rivers/Rose Barnett, The difference myth Sabine Andresen, Kinder und soziale Ungleichheit Hans Peter Kuhn, Geschlechterverhältnisse in der Schule: Sind die Jungen jetzt benachteiligt? Ulrike Schmauch, Gleichgeschlechtliche Orientierungen von Mädchen und Jungen Anja Zeiske/Alexandra Klein/Hans Oswald, Die Lust beim ersten Mal Dieser Band liefert Fachleuten und anderen Interessierten einen Einblick in den aktuellen Diskurs um Kindheit und Geschlecht. Positiv fällt auf, dass auch Zwischenergebnisse vorgestellt werden, was den wissenschaftlichen Austausch fördern dürfte. Sehr schön ist auch die differenzierte und sensible Einführung, die darauf hinweist, dass die Wirklichkeit der Kinder und der Verlauf ihrer geschlechtlichen Entwicklung auch nicht mit noch so zahlreichen empirischen Studien "vermessen" werden kann (12). Trotzdem ist die Wahrnehmung des Faktors Geschlechtsidentität für den erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs ebenso notwendig wie für die Praxis beispielsweise in Kindergarten und Schule. Wichtig hierfür sind kluge Interpretationen der Befunde zum Thema Kinder und Geschlecht. Solche theoretisch fundierten und weiterführenden Reflexionen sind in diesem Buch zu finden. Freiburger GeschlechterStudien 24/2010 ... der Band [liefert] einen facettenreichen Einblick in den Diskurs um Kindheit und Geschlecht, der seinem Anliegen des wissenschaftlichen Austausches u.a. durch die Vorstellung von Zwischenergebnissen, die auf ihre Weiterführung neugierig machen, gerecht wird. ... Lesenswert ist der Band im Sinne des angestrebten Forums für Kolleg/innen, die am Diskurs beteiligt sind, mit ähnlichen Schwerpunkten forschen und Fragen der Geschlechterentwicklung in Forschung und Lehre verfolgen. Interessant sind einzelne Beiträge darüber hinaus für die Auseinandersetzung mit geschlechtsspezifischen Bildungsprozessen im Rahmen des Umgangs mit Heterogenität in erziehungswissenschaftlichen Studiengängen: Die Bewusstwerdung über Erkenntnisse zur Geschlechtsidentität als einer Heterogenitätsdimension ist für den erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs ebenso notwendig wie für den wertschätzenden Umgang mit Individualität, Gemeinsamkeit und Verschiedenheit in der pädagogischen Praxis. socialnet.de 2/2009

    These critically diverse and innovative essays are aimed at restoring the social context of ancient Greek drama. Theatrical productions, which included music and dancing, were civic events in honor of the god Dionysos and were attended by a politically stratified community, whose delegates handled all details from the seating arrangements to the qualifications of choral competitors. The growing complexity of these performances may have provoked the Athenian saying "nothing to do with Dionysos" implying that theater had lost its exclusive focus on its patron. This collection considers how individual plays and groups of dramas pertained to the concerns of the body politic and how these issues were presented in the convention of the stage and as centerpieces of civic ceremonies. The contributors, in addition to the editors, include Simon Goldhill, Jeffrey Henderson, David Konstan, Franois Lissarrague, Oddone Longo, Nicole Loraux, Josiah Ober, Ruth Padel, James Redfield, Niall W.     An introduction to the study of women in diverse religious culturesWhile women have made gains in equality over the past two centuries, equality for women in many religious traditions remains contested throughout the world. In the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints women are not ordained as priests. In areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan under Taliban occupation girls and women students and their teachers risk their lives to go to school. And in Sri Lanka, fully ordained Buddhist nuns are denied the government identity cards that recognize them as citizens. Is it possible to create families, societies, and religions in which women and men are equal? And if so, what are the factors that promote equality?Theory of Women in Religions offers an economic model to shed light on the forces that have impacted the respective statuses of women and men from the earliest developmental stages of society through the present day. Catherine Wessinger integrates data and theories from anthropology, archaeology, sociology, history, gender studies, and psychology into a concise history of religions introduction to the complex relationship between gender and religion. She argues that socio-economic factors that support specific gender roles, in conjunction with religious norms and ideals, have created a gendered division of labor that both directly and indirectly reinforces gender inequality. Yet she also highlights how as the socio-economic situation is changing religion is being utilized to support the transition toward women's equality, noting the ways in which many religious representations of gender change over time

    What activities did the women of ancient Greece perform in the sphere of ritual, and what were the meanings of such activities for them and their culture? By offering answers to these questions, this study aims to recover and reconstruct an important dimension of the lived experience of ancient Greek women. A comprehensive and sophisticated investigation of the ritual roles of women in ancient Greece, it draws on a wide range of evidence from across the Greek world, including literary and historical texts, inscriptions, and vase-paintings, to assemble a portrait of women as religious and cultural agents, despite the ideals of seclusion within the home and exclusion from public arenas that we know restricted their lives. As she builds a picture of the extent and diversity of women’s ritual activity, Barbara Goff shows that they were entrusted with some of the most important processes by which the community guaranteed its welfare. She examines the ways in which women’s ritual activity addressed issues of sexuality and civic participation, showing that ritual could offer women genuinely alternative roles and identities even while it worked to produce wives and mothers who functioned well in this male-dominated society. Moving to more speculative analysis, she discusses the possibility of a women’s subculture focused on ritual and investigates the significance of ritual in women’s poetry and vase-paintings that depict women. She also includes a substantial exploration of the representation of women as ritual agents in fifth-century Athenian drama

Erec and Enide is the story of the quest and coming of age of a young knight, an illustrious member of Arthur's court, who must learn to balance the demands of a masculine public life—tests of courage, skill, adaptability, and mature judgment—with the equally urgent demands of the private world of love and marriage. We see his wife, Enide, develop as an exemplar of chivalry in the female, not as an Amazon, but as a brave, resolute, and wise woman. Composed ca. 1170, Erec and Enide masterfully combines elements of Celtic legend, classical and ecclesiastical learning, and French medieval culture and ideals.In choosing to write in rhymed octosyllabic couplets–Chrétien's prosodic pattern–Dorothy Gilbert has tried to reproduce what so often gets lost in prose or free verse translations: the precise and delicate meter; the rhyme, with its rich possibilities for emphasis, nuance, puns and jokes; and the "mantic power" implicit in proper names. The result will enable the scholar who cannot read Old French, the student of literature, and the general reader to gain a more sensitive and immediate understanding of the form and spirit of Chrétien's poetry, and to appreciate the more Chrétien's great contribution to European literature

    The connection between child development and gender can only be traced by analysing the complex interplay of many different individual and social, political and social, historical and cultural factors - it cannot be explored or empirically measured with the help of selective research. The current yearbook therefore presents theoretical, empirical-qualitative and empirically quantitative contributions and research reports that examine gender aspects of childhood life and learning. Dem Zusammenhang von kindlicher Entwicklung und Geschlecht lässt sich nur über die Analyse des komplexen Zusammenspiels vieler unterschiedlicher, individueller und gesellschaftlicher, politischer und sozialer, historischer und kultureller Faktoren auf die Spur kommen - er kann nicht mit Hilfe punktueller Recherchen erschlossen oder empirisch gemessen werden. Der aktuelle Jahrbuch-Band stellt deshalb theoretische, empirisch-qualitative und empirisch quantitative Beiträge und Forschungsberichte vor, die Geschlechteraspekte kindlichen Lebens und Lernens untersuchen. Aus dem Inhalt: Caryl Rivers/Rose Barnett, The difference myth Sabine Andresen, Kinder und soziale Ungleichheit Hans Peter Kuhn, Geschlechterverhältnisse in der Schule: Sind die Jungen jetzt benachteiligt? Ulrike Schmauch, Gleichgeschlechtliche Orientierungen von Mädchen und Jungen Anja Zeiske/Alexandra Klein/Hans Oswald, Die Lust beim ersten Mal Dieser Band liefert Fachleuten und anderen Interessierten einen Einblick in den aktuellen Diskurs um Kindheit und Geschlecht. Positiv fällt auf, dass auch Zwischenergebnisse vorgestellt werden, was den wissenschaftlichen Austausch fördern dürfte. Sehr schön ist auch die differenzierte und sensible Einführung, die darauf hinweist, dass die Wirklichkeit der Kinder und der Verlauf ihrer geschlechtlichen Entwicklung auch nicht mit noch so zahlreichen empirischen Studien "vermessen" werden kann (12). Trotzdem ist die Wahrnehmung des Faktors Geschlechtsidentität für den erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs ebenso notwendig wie für die Praxis beispielsweise in Kindergarten und Schule. Wichtig hierfür sind kluge Interpretationen der Befunde zum Thema Kinder und Geschlecht. Solche theoretisch fundierten und weiterführenden Reflexionen sind in diesem Buch zu finden. Freiburger GeschlechterStudien 24/2010 ... der Band [liefert] einen facettenreichen Einblick in den Diskurs um Kindheit und Geschlecht, der seinem Anliegen des wissenschaftlichen Austausches u.a. durch die Vorstellung von Zwischenergebnissen, die auf ihre Weiterführung neugierig machen, gerecht wird. ... Lesenswert ist der Band im Sinne des angestrebten Forums für Kolleg/innen, die am Diskurs beteiligt sind, mit ähnlichen Schwerpunkten forschen und Fragen der Geschlechterentwicklung in Forschung und Lehre verfolgen. Interessant sind einzelne Beiträge darüber hinaus für die Auseinandersetzung mit geschlechtsspezifischen Bildungsprozessen im Rahmen des Umgangs mit Heterogenität in erziehungswissenschaftlichen Studiengängen: Die Bewusstwerdung über Erkenntnisse zur Geschlechtsidentität als einer Heterogenitätsdimension ist für den erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs ebenso notwendig wie für den wertschätzenden Umgang mit Individualität, Gemeinsamkeit und Verschiedenheit in der pädagogischen Praxis. socialnet.de 2/2009
