    Die Ästhetik und das Wissenschaftsprogramm Johann Friedrich Herbarts (1776–1841) sind heute weitgehend vergessen, obwohl sie ebenso wie die an Herbart anschließende Theorietradition im 19. Jahrhundert von zentraler Bedeutung waren. Das herbartianische Wissenschaftsprogramm leitete nicht nur den Untergang des Idealismus ein, sondern legte auch wichtige Grundlagen für die Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft, den Strukturalismus, die Völkerpsychologie, die Psychoanalyse und den Wiener Kreis. Die Studie zeigt, dass die herbartianische Ästhetik für den funktionalistischen Formbegriff der Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaften ebenso fundamental gewesen ist wie für die Theoriebildung in den Geisteswissenschaften. The aesthetics and scientific programme of Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776–1841) are largely forgotten today, although being of key importance in the 19th century just as the theoretical tradition that followed Herbart. The Herbartian scientific programme did not only initiate the decline of idealism, but also laid essential foundations for art and music studies, structuralism, »Völkerpsychologie«, psychoanalysis and the Vienna Circle. The study shows, that the Herbartian aesthetics have been as fundamental for the functionalist idea of form in literary and art studies as well as for the theory formation in the humanities.

    Welchen Status kann man der Morphologie heute zusprechen? Ist sie Lehre oder Methode? Der vorliegende Band lotet durch exemplarische Studien die verschiedenen Verwendungsweisen aus. Die zu Grunde liegende Hypothese lautet: Morphologie dient in den Wissenschaften als Paradigma. Die hier versammelten Beiträge zeigen, dass die Morphologie auch in der Gegenwart wissenschaftsübergreifend für scheinbar heterogene Dimensionen und Bereiche eine integrative Funktion gewinnen kann – so wie sie bereits für Goethe als ein einigendes Band zwischen seinen vermeintlich getrennten Praktiken als Dichter, Künstler und Wissenschaftler dienen konnte. What status can be attributed to morphology today? Is it a doctrine or a method? This AZP supplement explores the various uses of morphology through exemplary studies. The underlying hypothesis is that morphology serves as a paradigm in the sciences. The contributions show that even in the present day, morphology can gain an integrative function for seemingly heterogeneous dimensions and fields across the sciences – just as it was already able to serve Goethe as a unifying bond between his supposedly separate practices as poet, artist and scientist.

    Industrial demand response can play an important part in balancing the intermittent production from a growing share of renewable energies in electricity markets. This paper analyses the role of aggregators - intermediaries between participants and the electricity market - in facilitating industrial demand response. Based on the results from semi-structured interviews with German demand response aggregators, as well as a wider stakeholder online survey, we examine the role of aggregators in overcoming barriers to industrial demand response. We find that a central role for aggregators is to raise awareness for the potentials of demand response, as well as to support implementation by engaging key actors in industrial companies. Moreover, we develop a taxonomy that helps analyse how the different functional roles of aggregators create economic value. We find that there is considerable heterogeneity in the kind of services that aggregators offer, many of which do create significant economic value. However, some of the functional roles that aggregators currently fill may become obsolete once market barriers to demand response are reduced or knowledge on demand response becomes more diffused.

    This paper examines the institutional arrangements of the macro-fiscal function in 16 African countries. Most ministries of finance (MoFs) have established a macro-fiscal department or unit, but their functions, size, structure and outputs vary considerably. Based on a survey, we present data on staff size, functional scope and the forecasting performance of macro-fiscal departments and identify common challenges in the countries reviewed. Some MoFs perform many macro-fiscal functions, but actions of various kinds are needed to strengthen their macro-fiscal departments. This paper provides some guidance for policy-makers in the region for enhancing the quality and scope of macro-fiscal outputs

    Verlagsinfo: Gleichwohl der Werkbegriff in der literaturwissenschaftlichen Praxis bis heute ein routiniert verwendeter Grundbegriff ist, gehört er zu den umstrittensten Konzepten in Literaturtheorie und Ästhetik. Um seine widersprüchliche Rolle zu erklären, rekonstruiert und systematisiert diese Studie zentrale Werkbegriffe und ihre Funktionen im jeweiligen Theoriekontext. Darüber hinaus konturiert sie einen sozialontologisch fundierten pragmatischen Werkbegriff, anhand dessen 'Werk' als Status von Texten bestimmt wird und mit dessen Hilfe am Beispiel des Œuvres von Max Frisch ästhetische, epistemische, moralische, rechtliche, politische und ökonomische Funktionen des Werkstatus differenziert und beschrieben werden. Auf diese Weise rückt die Studie die Privilegierung von Texten durch die Zuschreibung von Werkstatus in den Blick und arbeitet die Folgen dieser Privilegierung für den Umgang mit Literatur heraus. Sie stellt ein Instrumentarium zur Beschreibung und Analyse der Werkpraxis bereit und zeigt, dass und wie sich bereits die Konstitution und Funktionalisierung von Werkstatus als Teil der literarischen Praxis begreifen lassen. Klappentext engl.: This study presents a systematization of the debate about the concept of the literary work and outlines a pragmatic approach that allows us to examine both the normativity and the functionality of this contentious category.     Abstract: Can we learn something from poetry? Can poems convey to their readers insight, knowledge, orientation, understanding or even wisdom? The paper assumes that general answers to these questions are possible but often lacking in substance. Instead, it is worthwhile to consider (a) different types of cognitive achievements and (b) sub-genres of poetry to which specific cognitive achievements have been attributed in certain aesthetic traditions as well as in literary criticism. For this purpose, the paper introduces a modern descriptive vocabulary for various types of cognitive significance and advocates an orientation to the concept of “knowledge” instead of more vague terms like “insight” or “understanding”.     This paper examines the institutional arrangements of the macro-fiscal function in 16 African countries. Most ministries of finance (MoFs) have established a macro-fiscal department or unit, but their functions, size, structure and outputs vary considerably. Based on a survey, we present data on staff size, functional scope and the forecasting performance of macro-fiscal departments and identify common challenges in the countries reviewed. Some MoFs perform many macro-fiscal functions, but actions of various kinds are needed to strengthen their macro-fiscal departments. This paper provides some guidance for policy-makers in the region for enhancing the quality and scope of macro-fiscal outputs

    Die Ästhetik und das Wissenschaftsprogramm Johann Friedrich Herbarts (1776–1841) sind heute weitgehend vergessen, obwohl sie ebenso wie die an Herbart anschließende Theorietradition im 19. Jahrhundert von zentraler Bedeutung waren. Das herbartianische Wissenschaftsprogramm leitete nicht nur den Untergang des Idealismus ein, sondern legte auch wichtige Grundlagen für die Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft, den Strukturalismus, die Völkerpsychologie, die Psychoanalyse und den Wiener Kreis. Die Studie zeigt, dass die herbartianische Ästhetik für den funktionalistischen Formbegriff der Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaften ebenso fundamental gewesen ist wie für die Theoriebildung in den Geisteswissenschaften. The aesthetics and scientific programme of Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776–1841) are largely forgotten today, although being of key importance in the 19th century just as the theoretical tradition that followed Herbart. The Herbartian scientific programme did not only initiate the decline of idealism, but also laid essential foundations for art and music studies, structuralism, »Völkerpsychologie«, psychoanalysis and the Vienna Circle. The study shows, that the Herbartian aesthetics have been as fundamental for the functionalist idea of form in literary and art studies as well as for the theory formation in the humanities.

What status can be attributed to morphology today? Is it a doctrine or a method? This AZP supplement explores the various uses of morphology through exemplary studies. The underlying hypothesis is that morphology serves as a paradigm in the sciences. The contributions show that even in the present day, morphology can gain an integrative function for seemingly heterogeneous dimensions and fields across the sciences – just as it was already able to serve Goethe as a unifying bond between his supposedly separate practices as poet, artist and scientist.

Um seine widersprüchliche Rolle zu erklären, rekonstruiert und systematisiert diese Studie zentrale Werkbegriffe und ihre Funktionen im jeweiligen Theoriekontext. Darüber hinaus konturiert sie einen sozialontologisch fundierten pragmatischen Werkbegriff, anhand dessen 'Werk' als Status von Texten bestimmt wird und mit dessen Hilfe am Beispiel des Œuvres von Max Frisch ästhetische, epistemische, moralische, rechtliche, politische und ökonomische Funktionen des Werkstatus differenziert und beschrieben werden. Auf diese Weise rückt die Studie die Privilegierung von Texten durch die Zuschreibung von Werkstatus in den Blick und arbeitet die Folgen dieser Privilegierung für den Umgang mit Literatur heraus. Sie stellt ein Instrumentarium zur Beschreibung und Analyse der Werkpraxis bereit und zeigt, dass und wie sich bereits die Konstitution und Funktionalisierung von Werkstatus als Teil der literarischen Praxis begreifen lassen.     Where should we look to understand the origin of inequality? Most research focuses on three windows of evidence: (1) the archaeological record; (2) existing traditional societies; and (3) the historical record. I propose a fourth window of evidence - modern society itself. I hypothesize that we can infer the origin of inequality from the modern relation between energy use, hierarchy, and inequality. To do this, I create a large-scale numerical model that is informed by modern evidence. I then use this model to project modern trends into the past. The results are promising. The model predicts an explosion of inequality with the transition to agrarian levels of energy use. Subsequent increases in energy use are predicted to have little effect on inequality. The results are broadly consistent with the available evidence. This suggests that the hierarchical structure of modern societies may provide a window into the origin of inequality.
