    Throughout this book, the concept of framing is used to look at art, photography, scientific drawings and cinema as visually constituted, spatially bounded productions. The way these genres relate to that which exists beyond the frame, by means of plastic, chemically transposed, pencil-sketched or moving images allows us to decipher the particular language of the visual and at the same time circumscribe the dialectic between presence and absence that is proper to all visual media. Yet, these kinds of re-framing owe their existence to the ruptures and upheavals that marked the demise of certain discursive systems in the past, announcing the emergence of others that were in turn overturned.

    L’aventure politique détermine le sens de l’écriture chez Verlaine : sa manière. Contre la tradition qui a cultivé l’image affadissante d’un chantre élégiaque, aux accents pathétiques, cet essai montre avec force qu’il a été un poète résolument engagé dans son siècle. Si l’écrivain s’énonce toujours « en sourdine » ou sur le « mode mineur », c’est qu’il y reconnaît, en vers comme en prose, l’expression d’une éthique et d’une politique destinées aux victimes de l’histoire. Verlaine écrit d’abord pour les humbles, les sans-noms, tous ceux qui sont réduits au silence, et ne savent pas qu’ils ont droit au monde. L’emblème en serait le projet des Vaincus, un livre qui a hanté le poète de 1867 à 1874. Car il illustre une tension fondamentale entre l’exil et l’utopie, qui traverse toute l’œuvre. De Poèmes saturniens à Sagesse et Bonheur, une même relation unit le sujet à l’histoire : démocrate et socialiste au temps du bonapartisme, chrétien en pleine ère laïque et républicaine, il reste exclu et dominé. Exilé, le sujet renouvelle sans cesse l’exigence critique d’un monde meilleur. Le sens de l’utopie fonde le devenir de l’œuvre chez Verlaine.

    La notion d’événement littéraire est née au dix-neuvième siècle, au moment où la littérature se constitue en objet historique, cependant que la médiatisation croissante du champ culturel entraîne des pratiques et des stratégies radicalement nouvelles. La conception événementielle de la littérature met au premier plan les critères d’écart, d’originalité ou de rupture, que ce soit dans l’appréhension des chefs-d’œuvre du passé ou la réception des productions contemporaines : la reconnaissance de ce qui fait événement engage nécessairement une (re)définition de la littérature. Question lourde d’enjeux, au moment où l’essor de la presse et les bouleversements du marché culturel imposent des règles inédites, souvent ressenties comme traumatisantes : la valeur d’une œuvre est-elle réductible à son impact événementiel ? celui-ci constitue-t-il une instance de légitimation ? un événement littéraire est-il encore possible dans le système éditorial moderne qui s’esquisse alors ? Le débat est aussi complexe que décisif : il questionne les effets sociaux de la littérature, et, au-delà, son possible impact sur l’histoire. L’événement littéraire oblige à se demander ce qu’est, ce que vaut, ce que fait la littérature.

Dans la littérature postrévolutionnaire, écrire le corps, c’est scruter les marques inscrites dans les chairs par la loi, les signes tracés par la société, les cicatrices laissées par l’Histoire. Les études réunies dans ce volume interrogent ces nouveaux paradigmes de la représentation littéraire du corps dans quatre perspectives : en premier lieu est explorée la signification politique qu’il prend chez Sade, Balzac ou dans le théâtre révolutionnaire ; est développée ensuite une analyse du difficile transfert du corps du roi, dégradé chez Michelet, au corps du peuple chez Dumas ou à celui d’un nouveau Christ chez les saint-simoniens ; en troisième lieu, l’interrogation porte sur les modalités de l’incarnation de l’Histoire chez les personnages de Chateaubriand, de Balzac ou de Barbey d’Aurevilly ; enfin est étudiée la relation entre corps et création, dans la poésie de Baudelaire ou dans l’écriture autobiographique de George Sand. Du théâtre comme espace où l’acteur incarne les rôles sociaux au roman où la corporéité ancre le personnage dans l’Histoire, ce volume montre comment la littérature du XIXe siècle a recouru au corps pour figurer les rapports, souvent conflictuels, de l’individu à la société, au politique et à l’Histoire.

Drawing on eighteenth-century English romanticists, on explorers in America, and on Goethe's Werther, he had a profound effect on French writers from Victor Hugo and Lamartine to George Sand and Flaubert. A quixotic and paradoxical personality, he combined impressive careers as a brilliant prose-poet, a spiritual guide, a high-ranking diplomat, and an enterprising lover.Atala and René are his two best-known works, reflecting not only his own joys, aspirations, and despair, but the emerging tastes of a new literary era.     Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898) is one of the giants of nineteenth-century French poetry. Leader of the Symbolist movement, he exerted a powerful influence on modern literature and thought, which can be traced in the works of Paul Valéry, W.B. Yeats, and Jacques Derrida. From his early twenties until the time of his death, Mallarmé produced poems of astonishing originality and beauty, many of which have become classics.In the Collected Poems, Henry Weinfield brings the oeuvre of this European master to life for an English-speaking audience, essentially for the first time. Erec and Enide is the story of the quest and coming of age of a young knight, an illustrious member of Arthur's court, who must learn to balance the demands of a masculine public life—tests of courage, skill, adaptability, and mature judgment—with the equally urgent demands of the private world of love and marriage. We see his wife, Enide, develop as an exemplar of chivalry in the female, not as an Amazon, but as a brave, resolute, and wise woman. Composed ca. 1170, Erec and Enide masterfully combines elements of Celtic legend, classical and ecclesiastical learning, and French medieval culture and ideals.In choosing to write in rhymed octosyllabic couplets–Chrétien's prosodic pattern–Dorothy Gilbert has tried to reproduce what so often gets lost in prose or free verse translations: the precise and delicate meter; the rhyme, with its rich possibilities for emphasis, nuance, puns and jokes; and the "mantic power" implicit in proper names.     Médiation entre l’individu et la société, la famille apparaît comme un facteur essentiel tant dans la construction des égos que dans l’élaboration de l’ordre collectif. En un XIXe siècle où se modifient les normes et les pratiques de l’institution, le roman explore les règles, les enjeux, les dessous de cartes de celle-ci, et, misant sur la dynamique de la mêmeté et de l’altérité qui assure le renouvellement domestique et généalogique, en fait jouer les possibles. Le Jeu des familles se penche d’abord, avec Balzac puis Paul Bourget, sur les nostalgies patriarcales, qui exaltent les valeurs de la filiation et de la transmission, vecteurs de la mêmeté. Il se tourne ensuite, avec Balzac, les Goncourt et Zola, vers les atouts et les handicaps du familialisme bourgeois moderne, qui privilégie les préférences individuelles et l’alliance, point d’insertion de l’« autre ». Il examine l’utopie d’une rédemption fraternitaire proposée par George Sand et Eugène Sue, qui rêvent de faire de la famille la matrice de la cohabitation des classes et de la réconciliation des sexes. Il suit enfin, chez Edmond de Goncourt, Barbey d’Aurevilly et Elémir Bourges, la décadence des lignages et des maisonnées fin de siècle, dans lesquelles se brouillent délibérément les cartes. Convoquant de nombreux textes, fictionnels et non fictionnels, cet essai montre comment le roman répercute, repense, reconfigure l’institution, et participe ainsi à sa redéfinition.

    La notion d’événement littéraire est née au dix-neuvième siècle, au moment où la littérature se constitue en objet historique, cependant que la médiatisation croissante du champ culturel entraîne des pratiques et des stratégies radicalement nouvelles. La conception événementielle de la littérature met au premier plan les critères d’écart, d’originalité ou de rupture, que ce soit dans l’appréhension des chefs-d’œuvre du passé ou la réception des productions contemporaines : la reconnaissance de ce qui fait événement engage nécessairement une (re)définition de la littérature. Question lourde d’enjeux, au moment où l’essor de la presse et les bouleversements du marché culturel imposent des règles inédites, souvent ressenties comme traumatisantes : la valeur d’une œuvre est-elle réductible à son impact événementiel ? celui-ci constitue-t-il une instance de légitimation ? un événement littéraire est-il encore possible dans le système éditorial moderne qui s’esquisse alors ? Le débat est aussi complexe que décisif : il questionne les effets sociaux de la littérature, et, au-delà, son possible impact sur l’histoire. L’événement littéraire oblige à se demander ce qu’est, ce que vaut, ce que fait la littérature.

Contre la tradition qui a cultivé l’image affadissante d’un chantre élégiaque, aux accents pathétiques, cet essai montre avec force qu’il a été un poète résolument engagé dans son siècle. Si l’écrivain s’énonce toujours « en sourdine » ou sur le « mode mineur », c’est qu’il y reconnaît, en vers comme en prose, l’expression d’une éthique et d’une politique destinées aux victimes de l’histoire. Verlaine écrit d’abord pour les humbles, les sans-noms, tous ceux qui sont réduits au silence, et ne savent pas qu’ils ont droit au monde. L’emblème en serait le projet des Vaincus, un livre qui a hanté le poète de 1867 à 1874. Car il illustre une tension fondamentale entre l’exil et l’utopie, qui traverse toute l’œuvre. De Poèmes saturniens à Sagesse et Bonheur, une même relation unit le sujet à l’histoire : démocrate et socialiste au temps du bonapartisme, chrétien en pleine ère laïque et républicaine, il reste exclu et dominé. Exilé, le sujet renouvelle sans cesse l’exigence critique d’un monde meilleur. Le sens de l’utopie fonde le devenir de l’œuvre chez Verlaine.

Ce recueil n’est pas un jugement de l’œuvre, ni une interrogation sur sa recevabilité, pas plus qu’une assertion sur les limites de sa légitimité en tant que roman ou une justification, mais ce recueil est novateur puisque le premier à se concentrer sur le texte des Bienveillantes.Le présent recueil offre un riche éventail d’angles d’approches.     Throughout this book, the concept of framing is used to look at art, photography, scientific drawings and cinema as visually constituted, spatially bounded productions. The way these genres relate to that which exists beyond the frame, by means of plastic, chemically transposed, pencil-sketched or moving images allows us to decipher the particular language of the visual and at the same time circumscribe the dialectic between presence and absence that is proper to all visual media. Yet, these kinds of re-framing owe their existence to the ruptures and upheavals that marked the demise of certain discursive systems in the past, announcing the emergence of others that were in turn overturned.
