    The study presents an overview of Arthur Schnitzler's collaborative work with the film industry. His attitude towards the cinema is taken into account and also his perceptions and theoretical reflection on the new medium. In addition to the history of the movies produced during Schnitzler's lifetime on the basis of his literary texts, Schnitzler's own drafts based on his literature works, and finally his screenplays and movie sketches are considered. Based on Schnitzler's own drafts and his comments on the movies, the historical context of Schnitzler, his aesthetic demands, his film technique and his cinematic narrative strategies are reconstructed. Die vorliegende Untersuchung liefert einen Gesamtueberblick ueber Arthur Schnitzlers Zusammenarbeit mit der Filmindustrie. Dabei wird seine Haltung zum Kino ebenso beruecksichtigt wie seine Wahrnehmung und seine theoretische Reflexion des neuen Mediums. Neben der Entstehungsgeschichte der Verfilmungen, die zu Schnitzlers Lebzeiten auf der Grundlage seiner literarischen Texte entstanden sind, gilt es, Schnitzlers eigene Filmentwuerfe nach seinen Werken und schliesslich seine Drehbuecher und Filmskizzen anzufuehren. Anhand Schnitzlers eigenen Filmentwuerfen und seinen Aeusserungen zu den Verfilmungen wird der filmhistorische Kontext Schnitzlers, seine aesthetischen Forderungen an den Film, seine Filmtechnik und seine filmischen Erzaehlstrategien rekonstruiert.

    This book examines the reverberations of key components of Ronald Reagan’s ideology in selected Hollywood blockbuster movies. The aim of this analysis is to provide a clearer understanding of the intertwinement of cinematic spectacles with neoliberalism and neoconservatism. The analysis comprises a dissection of Reagan’s presidential rhetoric and the examination of four seminal Hollywood blockbuster movies. The time range for analysis stretches from the 1980s until the 2010s. Among the key foci are filmic content as well as production and distribution contexts. It is concluded that Reagan’s political metaphors and the corporatization of film studios in the 1970s and 1980s continue to shape much of Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking.

    Die vorliegende Monografie untersucht die genre- und traumatheoretische Entwicklung von TV- und Kinoproduktionen des Ersten Weltkrieges im Zentenarium. Es wird nach filmgeschichtlichen Mustern und Neuerungen gefragt und beleuchtet, welche Bedeutung der filmischen Kodierung von Traumata bei Verarbeitung von Gewaltgeschichte zukommt. Dazu wird die bislang nicht im Zusammenhang betrachtete filmgeschichtliche Periode von 1989 bis 2013 in einem gesonderten Kapitel analysiert.Die Arbeit legt einen geografischen Fokus auf diejenigen Filme, die sich mit dem Kriegsgeschehen im ehemaligen Osmanischen Reiches und Europas befassen. Der regionale Fokus dient der Untersuchung der Fragestellung, ob der im europäischen Gedächtnis als 'Urkatastrophe' geltende Krieg in ähnlicher Weise auf den modernen Nahen und Mittleren Osten bezogen wird und welche filmischen, historiografischen und erinnerungskulturellen Differenzen sich ausmachen lassen. Es wird argumentiert, dass es zur Ausprägung eines kulturellen Traumas kommt, das einerseits eine neue moralische Grammatik der Erinnerung markiert, andererseits aber bedeutende historiografische Unterschiede im regionalen Vergleich aufweist. This monograph examines the development of television and cinema productions on the centenary of the First World War from the perspectives of cultural memory, trauma theory, and film theory. It traces genre patterns and the historical development of First World War films and explores the ways in which the violent history of the war is coded cinematically. The corpus includes not only films made around the centenary of the war, but also in the period leading up to it, between 1989 and 2013. As one major result, the monograph points out new cinematic developments that occurred during the centenary period. With its regional focus on films that deal with the war in the former Ottoman Empire and in Europe, the study seeks to determine whether the war, often regarded as a 'seminal catastrophe' in European memory, is remembered differently in the Middle East. It argues that the complex history of First World War remembrance gave rise to new aesthetical coding of violence and an accompanying moral grammar of memory, which, however, differs considerably in its historical content between Europe and the Middle East.

Less well known is his earlier work, which offered a seismographic reading of cultural fault lines in Weimar-era Germany, with an eye to the confrontation between religious revival and secular modernity. Die Autorinnen und Autoren des Bandes analysieren Spielfilme aus Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Italien, Japan, der Sowjetunion und den Vereinigten Staaten, die für die filmische Verarbeitung der Vergangenheit sowie der Gegenwartsprobleme und Zukunftserwartungen charakteristisch sind. Damit leistet das Buch einen Beitrag zur vergleichenden Geschichte der Nachkriegsgesellschaften und ist zugleich ein Plädoyer für den zeithistorischen Quellenwert von Spielfilmen

Es wird nach filmgeschichtlichen Mustern und Neuerungen gefragt und beleuchtet, welche Bedeutung der filmischen Kodierung von Traumata bei Verarbeitung von Gewaltgeschichte zukommt. Dazu wird die bislang nicht im Zusammenhang betrachtete filmgeschichtliche Periode von 1989 bis 2013 in einem gesonderten Kapitel analysiert.Die Arbeit legt einen geografischen Fokus auf diejenigen Filme, die sich mit dem Kriegsgeschehen im ehemaligen Osmanischen Reiches und Europas befassen. Der regionale Fokus dient der Untersuchung der Fragestellung, ob der im europäischen Gedächtnis als 'Urkatastrophe' geltende Krieg in ähnlicher Weise auf den modernen Nahen und Mittleren Osten bezogen wird und welche filmischen, historiografischen und erinnerungskulturellen Differenzen sich ausmachen lassen. Es wird argumentiert, dass es zur Ausprägung eines kulturellen Traumas kommt, das einerseits eine neue moralische Grammatik der Erinnerung markiert, andererseits aber bedeutende historiografische Unterschiede im regionalen Vergleich aufweist This monograph examines the development of television and cinema productions on the centenary of the First World War from the perspectives of cultural memory, trauma theory, and film theory. It traces genre patterns and the historical development of First World War films and explores the ways in which the violent history of the war is coded cinematically. The corpus includes not only films made around the centenary of the war, but also in the period leading up to it, between 1989 and 2013. As one major result, the monograph points out new cinematic developments that occurred during the centenary period. With its regional focus on films that deal with the war in the former Ottoman Empire and in Europe, the study seeks to determine whether the war, often regarded as a 'seminal catastrophe' in European memory, is remembered differently in the Middle East. It argues that the complex history of First World War remembrance gave rise to new aesthetical coding of violence and an accompanying moral grammar of memory, which, however, differs considerably in its historical content between Europe and the Middle East
