The interpretation of literary texts is a strong case in point: for about two hundred years there have been conflicting views about whether, and how much, authorial intention should matter when professional readers interpret literature. These debates grew increasingly fierce during the post-World War II period, the landmarks of which were the notions of intentional fallacy and the death of the author. Seventy-odd years later, there is still no consensus in sight. What has always been neglected in the debates around authorial intention, however, is a reflection on the historical dimension of the debate and how historically bound each of the theoretical positions in the debate were. This book focusses precisely on the historical dimension of authorial intention, providing a systematic historical reconstruction of the importance ascribed to it in literary texts from Classical Greece to the present day, and including a chapter on authorial intention in jurisdiction and legal interpretation from a historical perspective. The book reconstructs a typology of the most important concepts of intention in interpretation for diachronic and synchronic use.     Im Kontext des großflächigen Wandels von Zugang und Nutzung von Land - kritisch als land grabbing bezeichnet - kommt es vermehrt zu Konflikten zwischen Landnutzer_innen und Investoren. In diesen Prozessen der "Inkontrollnahme" ist der Staat auf vielfältige Weise involviert. In diesem Working Paper analysiere ich anhand einer Fallstudie zum Handeln zehn staatlicher Akteure in einem Konflikt um die Ausweitung der Sojaproduktion im Norden Brasiliens, wie diese Akteure Konflikte um Land beeinflussen. Ich argumentiere, dass das Handeln der unterschiedlichen staatlichen Akteure einzeln und in Beziehung zueinander analysiert werden muss, um die Rolle des Staates in Konflikten um Land besser zu verstehen. Um die Widersprüche staatlichen Handels zu erklären, greife ich auf Pierre Bourdieus Verständnis von Staat als ein Feld zurück. Diese gehen auf unterschiedliche Interessen, Kompetenzen und Zuständigkeiten zurück und strukturieren sich entlang verschiedener gegensätzlicher Anordnungen. Diese Komplexität staatlichen Handelns hat maßgeblichen Einfluss auf den Konfliktverlauf sowie dessen Dauer. In the context of large-scale changes in access to and use of land - critically dubbed land grabbing - conflicts between land users and investors are an increasing phenomenon. The state is involved in a variety of ways in such processes of taking over control over land. Empirical studies concerned with the state show the diversity and inconsistency of state actions. However, they rarely deal with conflicts over land. Furthermore, the complexity of state structures is often overlooked. In this working paper I ask how state actors influence conflicts over land, using a case study on the actions of ten different state actors in a conflict over the extension of soy production in northern Brazil. I argue that the actions of different state actors need to be analyzed individually and in relation to each other, in order to better understand the role of the state in conflicts over land. For the analysis I use Pierre Bourdieus understanding of the state as a field, which offers an explanation for the contradictory actions of state actors. These are rooted in different interests, competencies and expertise and structured around different polar arrangements. This complexity of state actions has an important influence on the development and duration of conflicts over land.
