This book provides a critical survey of the literature on the Vietnam War and is intended both for academic and general readers. Earlier works of this kind constantly recycled criticism of a half-dozen of the same works. In this study, the aim was to discuss a much greater number of works, including a few that have never been discussed. To appeal to non-academic readers, Lit-Crit jargon was kept to a minimum, and parallels with earlier works of war literature, especially those of the two world wars, were established

In this study of three of Barbara Pym’s novels, Naghmeh Varghaiyan, drawing on examinations of women’s humour by Eileen Gillooly, Regina Barreca, and others, shows how the humorous female discourse in Some Tame Gazelle, Excellent Women, and Jane and Prudence undermines patriarchal culture and subverts both female and male stereotypes such as that of the spinster and of the Byronic hero. Varghaiyan reveals how the rhetoric of women’s humour enables Pym’s female characters to survive in the patriarchal culture and to unsettle it.

Inspired by the “spatial turn,” this book takes a fresh look at three of Mary Shelley’s novels: ‘Frankenstein’, ‘The Last Man’, and ‘Lodore’. It examines the literary and social spaces constructed in these three novels. The novels complement each other in the way in which the interaction between text and space is played through in each of them. In all three, however, space emerges as a socially and politically powerful construct, and the literary text itself is seen to play an important role in its construction. The three novels also implicitly reflect on their own role in this process. In this way, Shelley makes the naturalising logic of the spatial imagination visible, and challenges this logic in the process. Thus, the focus on literary space opens up an interesting perspective from which Shelley’s political and aesthetic concerns can be re-examined.

‘Not I – Kazuo Ishiguro and the Politics of Misrecognition’ takes a closer look at how Ishiguro’s narrators deal with their metaphorical ‘parents’, their literary ancestors from Hamlet to Alfred Prufrock. Ishiguro’s narrators unwittingly express a metafictional concern about their existence in the shadows of English literary history and struggle with an imagined pressure to compete with iconic literary characters. This book traces their narrative anxiety against a variety of other canonical intertexts by William Shakespeare, Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, George Eliot and T. S. Eliot and takes a closer look at the narrators’ narrative strategy of repression. Like Walter Benjamin’s angel of history, they all would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed through the carefully falsified construction of their stories. These narrators are never fully in control of their own narratives and so they inadvertently betray their own struggle for recognition.
